- I went over a few kinds of wool in this Video. Here is a Summary:
Merino Roving Wool is super soft, felts well and creates STRAIGHT dreadlocks
Corriedale Roving Wool and Corriedale Carded/Bulky Wool have more texture and can create STRAIGHT and WAVY dreadlocks
Icelandic, Wensleydale and Teesewater Roving/Combed wool also have more texture and are naturally CURLY wool and create KINKY/CURLY dreadlocks.
Wool Locks, such as Mohair, Wensleydale and Teesewater are great for creating Luxe Ends on dreadlocks.

This was so unbelieveably helpful. I was truly hoping you had some videos in the works about the process just to get started with the kinkier dreads as well as the lux ends. I want to make myself some but I don't want to invest in a ton of wool I won't be able to use up. Thank you so much for your effort in this video.

Yes you are so right, I havent seen any other videos out there explaining this, and I was about to try Icelandic to make some textured locks, I am used to using Icelandic fleece for wet felting collars and hope I can brush the ends out to be more hair like. Thankyou for explaining 🥰

I have been researching like crazy and this has been the most helpful video so far! Now I’m just waiting for the how to for the bumpy curly locks! I’m a stay at home mom with 11 kids so spending a ton of money on a coarse to learn how isn’t an option and neither is trial and error lol I just want to make some as accents for myself and my daughter

I’d really like to make my own dreads
This is the first video I have watched about making locs and i have no knowledge of working with fabric. My question is, what happens if you mix the different kinds of wool? Assuming you can do that. I'm imagining the rake type thing that I've seen in the past for mixing fibers. Have you experimented with mixing different wool, and if so what did you find out works and doesn't work?
@@keahbawesome I have not experimented with mixing wool fibers but I have a friend who does! They are trying to create wool combos that can be kinky (which tend to be coarser wool that shed a lot) with soft and smooth so woolies can be made for more sensitive skin! I have a lot on my plate, so this is not something I am interested in doing. It does require carding brushes/machines.

Reading through the comments and I see Icelandic coming up which is great news for me as I have 4 Icelandic fleeces in my spinning room! Do you know if both the tog and thell (outer and inner coat) is used or just one? I process my own wool for spinning and would love to use what I have on hand for trial and error.
It is fantastic that you have Icelandic on hand. Honestly, I buy my wool already processed a bit so I can't say whether it's the outer or inner wool 🤔 what I do know is I believe it's the outer coat that has the "locs" of wool...I think that wool is carded into Batts to make roving wool..but don't quote me on that! It could be that all the wool can be used for roving. That being said, the texture of Icelandic is beautiful BUT if you over manipulate it the woolies get rough and can be itchy or bothersome for sensitive scalps. So don't over do it with this particular wool
I recently discovered your Etsy shop. your work is beautiful. would you make a custom set or a hair band for me? my natural color hair is gray...kind of lighter ashy silver and I sometime use a color depositing conditioner in rose gold. I would love some dreads in shades of gray and a mauve / pink/ lavender

Have you use Shetland wool? If you habe does it go curly or striaght?
Definitely helpful. I realized that I did get the wrong wool (I wanted more of a natural texture) but I’ve been having issues with a “seam” … it almost looks like a green bean 😂 how can I fix that ?
Ah yes, some wool, such as Merino will get a seam when you are wet felting...I have a couple suggestions, one will be in a video I will be making and posting soon! The other is you could get a felting needle and use that to blend the seams a bit.

From my small amount of experience and from what I have heard from others, it's just really hard to felt synthetic wool. It's not really wool so it wont felt like 100% wool

Thank you for your videos! Do you know if newly bought wool is supposed to smell? I bought Icelandic Wool and it looks pretty good, although it's a bit itchy, but the biggest problem is that I am not sure if it is safe to be worn every day because of the strong smell. I read that sometimes wool is treated with chemicals...
What does it smell like and where did you buy it?
@@hollysdreadfulcolors187 It smells chemical...something like petroleum... I have a blanket that smelled the same when I bought it and it lost its smell after using it for a week or so. Both the blanket and this yarn came sealed in plastic bags, so maybe it could be from that... I am from Romania and I bought the yarn here, but I am not sure where it's from.

Any tips for itchy Icelandic wool? I’ve heard of using white vinegar, conditioner, etc.
Ah yes, Icelandic has an amazing texture but can Be rough/itchy! Sometimes this is the trade off that happens when we want kinky woolies. I never recommend products that cause build up or go directly on your woolies. However, tea tree and peppermint essential oils or shampoos can help soothe the scalp. When I made my first set of Lincoln woolies, they were extra itchy for 3 days. Then they got better..and I have loved Lincoln since. That being said, I had a customer with an extremely sensitive scalp order some Lincoln woolies from me and she could not get passed the itch 😔. I let her return her set and I sent her another one that was hypoallergenic. My point is, everyone is different. So if some basic remedies don't work and its still itchy after a week, that may not be the wool type for you. I hope you can get passed the itchy phase and enjoy your woolies!!!!

How is the care for the lux ends?
I bought some "bluefaced Leicester" wool not realizing some curl and some don't. Any chance you know if it will curl? Lol I'm down either way, just Hella curious and it hasn't arrived
It'll have texture...just manipulate the wool like you see in my videos and it'll work out!
Oh, sorry...Blue Faced Leicester aka BFL is a bumpy texture..it has super short waves which look more like bumps. That may not be the texture you want.

@jessicawatts444 I shop on Etsy. BeesyBeeFibers, Hearthsidefibers, mohairandmore are good shops. Wool that has texture is Teesewater, Wensleydale, Masham, Lincoln, to name a few. Sometimes you gotta just buy some wool roving and see what kind of texture it creates! Hope this helps!
To make the super kinky dreads would you use the curly wool and do the ball rubbing motion? Or do they just felt kinky?
Some wool like Teesewater will dry crimpy...but will be more kinky with manipulations.

Any soap works. I personally use olive oil soap...but as long as it makes suds it will work! If you find you are sensitive to certain soaps, stay away from those.
I bought olive soap but scared to ruin the hair.

@@pansygirltaylor9267 soap helps with the felting process. Get your water nice and soapy/sudsy.
