What silliness about the canoe. That's what boots are made for. I sure wouldn't want to scrub out a canoe in the winter time there. It's good for a person to get mud under their boots and under fingernails.I remember camping by a lake and a lady visited with a little 2 year old girl. Every time the girl got down to play in the dirt her mother would rush over. Take her clothes off and wash her and the put on new clean clothes. Went through a dozen changes in about an hour. I felt very sorry for the little girl. My little girl has a mud kitchen and we want her to play in the mud.
WOW! Magnet for retreiving mooring chains. I did that once when moored in a marina and stepped off to the dock and dropped my car keys. Boat owner had left for the day. I thought I might have to call and hire a scuba diver to retrieve them but I used my noggin' and fished them out with a magnet. I still keep that magnet to this day even though I am not boating for now. Genious!
I clocked you at the water point Thursday while walking the dog. Didn't realise the cafe was so slim and pointed at the front. You've made a great job of her.
@@HollyTheCafeBoat that was exactly my thoughts. Very Titantic, Britannic, Olympic early 1900s steam ship look. Makes a refreshing change from the usual narrowboat bow.

It's been wonderful watching all your hard work with Holly pay off she's beautiful (as is Zero) and what a great way to get through lockdown!. Love all your vids what a wonderful way to live and your both always smiling you brighten up the day 💞
You were doing quite well with your solar on an overcast day. It also makes a huge difference to output if the panels are pointing directly at the sun. I am on a winter mooring so I made some props to stand the panels up at about 75 degrees to horizontal. Doubled the power out. I’m working on a sun tracking system so that they are heliotropic. Quite simple to do this on land but not so easy on a boat that moves.
The origin of the 'd', as in 2d on the toll bridge, derives from the Roman 'denarius'; adopted and used to denote the 'old penny' before decimalisation. I can't wait to pass by the boat after lockdown and try out the 'drizzle cake (last weeks offering); in the meantime keep up the wonderful cinematography and narrative. A weekly joy to those of us who are canal side bound.
1d was sub-diived into half d - ha'penny and quarted d - farthing, so there were 240*4 farthings, 960 farthings in the pound. +/- a year of the creation of the "penny black" stamp in 1840 the English parliament tried to do decimalisation then, and say the £1 would be 1000 farthings. The problem of the 0.4 % devaluation of this very common coin meant the the proposal did not get agreement and decimalisation did not pass into law at that time.
Love your terminology, being precious about boats. Very difficult to keep anything clean in a rural environment, especially near slow moving water. Growing up in the South near the Solent you regularly heard the term ‘mucking about in boats’. My Dad used to take us to the Norfolk Broads sailing and I can remember him now, some 40 years later, saying ‘if sailing on the Solent is mucking about on boats, then sailing on the Broads is boating about in muck!’ I should think boating on the canal System is very similar, and when the better weather arrives a quick mop down will soon clear the decks...
Hi guys. I am really enjoying your videos. I am from Wisconsin USA and find the videos on the canal to be very interesting. Great to see the old villages and and country side there. Your great to watch so keep vids coming.
An interesting vlog. We got to see the business side of narrowboating. Well done Jo, at least you didn't have to canoe the cassette 4 miles like before. You now have mint scented solar panels thanks to Vic's initiative. Repton School is a co-educational independent school for boarding and day pupils aged between 13 and 18. It only costs £9,100 per term. 😯 Thanks for the walk about.
That looks to me (21.23) like a crown green bowling green. The centre is raised to make it difficult to bowl in a straight line, hence the fun. Appreciate what you say about the contrast between canal and road life. Used to live along a very quiet narrow dirt track so suddenly we saw a town that was filled with cars and buses and people.
You are quite right Roald Dahl did go to Repton. Also I reckon the “old postbox’ you were looking at was actually an old stamp vending machine circa 1960. They often had them outside village post offices in those days. From which you can tell I am old but not totally knackered! Cheshire Ring starts 31 May from Middlewich, God and Covid permitting. I played cricket and hockey against Repton in the dim and distant past so it was interesting to see it again.
Hi, new subscriber here, ex Somerset / Milton Keynes now living in Cape Town South Africa. Love the vlogs, makes me so nostalgic, more please. Wishing you much success.
Fun Fact for the Day. The British currency system (prior to decimalisation in 1971) used the abbreviations '£' for pound, 's' for shilling and 'd' for pence. £ = Libra, meant pound, s = solidus, meant shilling and d = denarius meant penny. Solidus and Denarius were originally Roman coins, Libra was a Roman pound (in weight) of pure silver.
:-) Thanks for the fun fact Austin! I like them! I did think Dimes was quite a weird choice but when you're met with the stern authority of a 17th century road sign you don't question it!
Hi; great video, thanks. The small / old post boxes were, in fact, stamp dispensers which used to be outside post offices. Apropos the currency: Now £1 = 100p but before 15th Februart, 1971 £1 = 240d (d was also pemce and, in 1971, p were called "new pence"). Thus 100p = 240d. Thanks!

There is a narrowboat cafe near me, seems to do well (should do super-well when the weather is better). They have a mooring slightly away from the centre of town (no real competition), but near a bridge and road access (so easy access for all). The customers get a hard mooring surface to stand on when ordering (i.e. no mud) and double height railway sleepers along the busy towpath that they can use as comfy seats.

When reversing look towards the bow as you can see which way the boat is pointing. You can steer with the tiller but you have to wait for the bow to start moving before the boat heads in that direction. Just keep looking backwards now and again to make sure you're not heading into something.

Solar panels have bypass diodes on individual cells or banks of cells to prevent over-current flowing from sunny cells damaging shaded cells. Ideally, each cell would have its own bypass diode, but to reduce cost and complexity, most often substrings of cells are bypassed as a group. An expensive panel on a satellite in space in5% shadow might still make 90% of the rated capacity. A domestic panel here might lose ¼ to ⅓ of the capacity for the same 5% coverage by a leaf.

We started out with those toilets on our boat We quickly moved to the C head composting toilet amazing You might wanna check into it it'll make your life better
ambient light makes a huge differance with solar panels , it pays to keep the panels dust free , scratches are not good , the wind blow over a pine tree in my yard , it had not casting shadow on my solar panels ,, but my panels increased production time by 3 hrs over a average day just from ambient light

Happy to see Jo didn't slip or trip taking the toilet out, I am still waiting for the day when someone falls in the mud carrying one. We were hoping you would be down at great haywood by now...you will love the trading footfall at Fradley Junction and great haywood...you will be amazingly busy.
vic's comment about an empty water berth being a water festival and veritable spa 🤣🤣...we felt the same on monday having washed our roof both showered and done a machine wash, and still went back to mooring full.....aaaahhhh and relax ,
Hope you have the coffee meringue cake going on when we happen along Holly 🍰🍰☕☕
Now my mixer was my mums and pre 1970s until it blew itself up,had the speed of a reliant Robin missing two wheels, but this new mixer, quite cheap from ASDA has the speed of an Aston Martin, cake mixture looks better than the last lot, cheers and hope you have many happy travels regards much respect Ian
Good morning from Los Angeles. I love your volgs. It's great to see the life style your building.
Good Morning L.A! Thanks for watching Bill, glad you like the videos :-)
Having watched to the end, I think going out on local walks with the camera is an excellent idea -very enjoyable look round Repton , as with Swarkestone previously. Cheers
Why have you stopped recording vlogs. We are all waiting in anticipation please make an announcement just to let us all know
The old units at the post office may have been stamp machines, coin in - stamp out. That was when you could put a six penny piece in and get a stamp. Nowadays it’s more like you need to scan a fiver! Still binge watching, I will catch up. Great content, lovely people, a smile a minute.
Every boat can turn in reverse ...
Ya got to wait for the tiller to bite so to speak whilst ya gently wiggle it tightly from left to right ! I've just discovered your channel. 8 amps in the winter is a big WOW ...
Great vlog with great music...easy watching with two happy people.. thank you for sharing 👍
Thanks asboss :-)
Lovely jitty walks xx i have fond memories of repton...twas where my father in law was from ..and oh my i know what you mean about the pace on roads...it freeks me out for sure.....hopefully your business will be perfect fro outdoor picnics xxxmuch loving kindness xx
It may not have been a glamorous day, but it was quite enjoyable for this Californian.
:-D Thanks SCA!
Thy are crown green bowling clubs and the lawn is called a green, loving your vlogs nearly caught up now x
Hi loving your chanel came down on Wednesday but you were closed will try again, was thinking of a nice touch for your coffee when watching vic trying to do a design!! Get a template made with zero on then all your coffee is personalised with the help of a sprinkle of cocoa powder!! Loopylissy xx
Walked past the boat yesterday, glorious sunshine lots of walkers and your boat was all shut up. Get a grip 🤣 needed a coffee.
:-D! Guilty. I've been in the engine room trying to fix things today but we've missed a few sunny days. We'll be open Saturday and Sunday this weekend - just in time for the rain! HA!
Emptying those cassettes after so long you’ll become professionals in free diving. 🇬🇧🇦🇺😀
Haha that would be a bonus!
Can you get a sun-tracker panel for a boat?
Lovely vlog thank you both for keeping us up to date on your lovely life on the cut. After messaging you the recipe for Tiffin last week I decided to make some, it's just so tasty and didn't last long even though its just my wife and I having it. probably best if your thinking of perhaps selling it by the slice on Holly to make a seperate batch for you two :)
Enjoyed the stroll with you two. Jo didn’t seem to have her happy smiling face on today. ......must be the toilet duty that did it lol!!!! Take care and stay safe....xx
Exactly, that's why I mustn't be allowed to do it again :-)
@@HollyTheCafeBoat what an excuse!!! 😎😎🤪
Did that walk in the summer - nice place, terrible traffic. You’ll love Alrewas when you get there if you liked Repton.
Brilliant chippy at Alrewas and the butcher is awesome.... And of course there is the national memorial arboretum which is such a moving place
@@lordbelvoir2543 I did both!
@@bencooper6284 what the chippy and the butcher😉.... I was there a couple of year ago and the chippy was celebrating their 30th year, everything was priced as 30 years ago..... Still trying to lose the belly now!!! Pmsl
We're looking forward to Alrewas, I hope they do something similar for every birthday :-D Though we have been enjoying the chippy here in Willington!
Hey guys. Love the show. I just got a 30ft and the 1st thing I purchased is a simploo. I will live continuous with a dog called Dude and hope to be on it in June. Hope to find you some day for a coffee or two.
I just found you guys this morning and am now happily subscribedto your channel. I think you guys are great, a super cool couple, and I'm really enjoying your videography. I'm currently watching your adventure in the peak district and I think you guys do a tremendous job with your videos. Please keep up the good work
Ah fantastic! Thanks Joseph! It's great to have you with us for the ride. We love the Peak District.
🤣 I think you mean Lawn Bowls rather than Pétanque or ‘Boule’. 🤣 UK HQ are in Royal Leamington Spa where the Commonwealth Games Matches will be held later this year. Got great Crown Green in Llangollen beside the canal. More Crown greens on Rochdale. Have to invent new Narrowboat location Game; “Name that Green”. It was lovely seeing some shots inside Zero. I know it’s your home & privacy is important but it’s a classic boat & interesting in its own right. Loving these ‘tubes’.
Ah thanks eCommencal! Pétanque is a great sounding name for the game though isn't it? I wish I'd called it that instead now! Haha, "Name that Green" sounds great. Glad you're enjoying the tubes!
your site is great.
The two items at the post office are first and second class stamp machines. You used to be able to buy stamps from them when the shop was closed.
2.25 cracking frame .... Enjoyed this little jaunt !
Thanks Tracey!
Enjoyed the vlog , good luck to you both, best wishes from NYC .
Gday Joanna and Victor love your vlogs.
:-) Thanks Peter!
HELP! I've just finished watching all your vlogs from Ep. 1 on at the rate of 3 or 4 a day, now I'm at loss for entertainment until you produce a new one. Think you could up your production to one a day? I'm tired of shoveling snow here in Colorado. Love you guys!
Your kettle wasn't nervous, it was just rehearsing The Flight of the Bumblebee, ready for the evening performance....
Great show. I heard your comment about the solar panel and just a little bit of shade. I have heard that MPPT controllers deal with that condition better. Stay safe.
Love your smiles! So infectious!! Love it!!
A vlog of sunshine and showers ?Enjoyed the walk around Repton.
Really enjoyable vlog. Thanks for taking us on your walk. We really enjoyed the scenery. Looks like it should be a good spot for Holly? Stay well.
Hi to you both I just noticed the ring on you finger. Congrats again
Thanks Keith!
Awesome Video , thanks
Glad you liked it, thanks :-)
Thanks guys ❤️🏴👍
:-D Thanks Peter!
Great work Jo emptying the ‘poop bucket’. I wouldn’t worry about the glory thing when Vic empty’s it. Carrying shit is shitty!
That thing in the wall of the post office was an old postage stamp dispenser......😎
" . . and if you tell that to the young people today, they won't believe you!"
_Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch_ 😂
We started out with those toilets on our boat We quickly moved to the C head composting toilet amazing You might wanna check into it it'll make your life better
Thanks Barbara, we'll check those out!
ambient light makes a huge differance with solar panels , it pays to keep the panels dust free , scratches are not good , the wind blow over a pine tree in my yard , it had not casting shadow on my solar panels ,, but my panels increased production time by 3 hrs over a average day just from ambient light
Time for a coffee i think 😄
post office was for stamp distribution self service the d on the bridge is for old pence when there was 240 pennies to the pound that was expensive I reckon
Thanks for the info John! :-)
I aspire to use the phrase “higgldey piggledy” at least once this week.
Thank you for that.
Haha! Thanks Patrick! Use it wisely; it's a powerful phrase.
@@HollyTheCafeBoat New cafe style drinking game: When Vic says "canoe" have a sip of coffee, when Jo says "higgledy piggledy" have a nice piece of cake!
Holidays or Holly days, it's all good.
Hi guys, the 2d is 2 old pennies commonly known in the day as "tuppence" That machine near the post box was an old stamp machine, put your money in get a stamp out, stick on your letter then post it, I'm showing my age, 🤦♂️
Yup. Thank you for showing my age. I donate fippence to you.
@@MrRupit123 That's to generous make it thruppence
How about upping it to a tanner or half a crown
I remember this and also Woodbines machine for 2 shilling coin
Or maybe a florin!
Hi there. Music on videos is answered on youtube itself (hope you can understand it) ,.On toilet emptying, my missus says good for you Jo, but she is not going to change the habit of a caravanning lifetime apparently, so that's me told. I dare not mention fetching the water either . On our one week with a canal boat, she jumped onto jetty before I had stopped , fell over, and broke her foot.! Which is why we walk canals when we can , but that's as far as it will ever get. Have a good weekend.
Happy to see Jo didn't slip or trip taking the toilet out, I am still waiting for the day when someone falls in the mud carrying one. Interesting to see some of the old cast-iron features of the town still in use, the street lamp, mail drop etc... Here everything is replaced with plastic, even the old steel manholes we used at the sanitation district are replaced with composite embedded w/RFI chip identifiers. Progress?
May you have many more "days off" even when you're on Holly!
:-) Thanks Leonard
You two are just too cute !
:-D Thanks Dinag
Wot no cake! Still you can't have everything. You have glamour Vic in the form of your lovely wife you lucky sod. Another brilliant vlog of narrowboat life.
Ace to see Repton. Hope you enjoyed Melbourne. I still look on it as home territory.
We loved Melbourne, such a lovely town! :-)
@@HollyTheCafeBoat We will call for a coffee next time we are allowed down there ...
Epic skills, Vic!
Aaw, sweet. "Two dimes". No. That was "tuppence" (two pence) love you both :)
:-) I had my American hat on
@@HollyTheCafeBoat " american hat - which part of America? Brasil,, Argentina? Chile? America is a big continent - many say two continents!
Dimes are USA money...from an American.🇺🇸
Hi I really like the colour of Zero - what shade of green is the cabin? and if I am allowed two questions, we are looking to let more light in as we just have port holes - what are your hatch windows made of - is it polycarbonate - and did you fashion them up (put the catches on) yourself? Hope you make it up towards Wheelton at some point..
Another enjoyable vid. Loved the walk into the ancient town and that foot path through the fences and hedges was lovely. Jo, if I may be so bold, what is the brand name of that gorgeous turtle neck sweater ( jumper) you were wearing to the water point? Looks so warm and toasty.
Hi Charice! Thanks, its the warmest thing I own, so cosy! It was from Mountain Warehouse and I remember it was quite cheap :-D
Another cracking ‘tube’ ...the secret to the loo cassettes is use the green bio liquid breaks content to a slurry and is vaguely floral on emptying
Lovely coffee and our girt enjoyed her hot chocolate too.... Shame we missed Jo but she had just nipped off for her afternoon siesta.... But Victor makes a good coffee.... Can always rely on Victor.....
Oh yeh I think you might need a sign or two as anybody told you?
:-D Jo was tired from roasting all the beans! I'm surprised you found us to be honest, we haven't got a sign.
@@HollyTheCafeBoat and here we was thinking you'd read and fully understood the instruction book... Mmmmm so congratulations aren't in order then?..... Or are they??? 🤔.... Yeh we nearly walked on by(sure there's a song in there) because you know what you need don't you..... "a sign"
