When it came to tactics and all out bravery, nobody could touch Bill Muncey. He was an absolute tiger and
the greatest ambassador of the sport of Unlimited Hydroplane Boat Racing!!!

Thanks! I think I like the old ads as much as the boats and races.

Remember seeing this on TV cause Dad had to work and we couldn't go up to Seattle to see the Gold Cup race.

I lived just a few miles from Lake Washington from the early 1950's until '62 then moved out East of Renton and I remember being able to hear the "Thunder Boats" probably 15 miles away as the crow flies, I saw so many races on Lake Washington I'm not sure if I saw this one. When the APBA started charging money I stopped going, it had been free all those years I think they started charging in somewhere in the '90's onward they also chaged one year when the race course was moved to the north end of Lake Washington in 1974 (only one year) it was a total failure changing the location. The thrill of hydroplane racing for me is a memory now one I cherish as in "Those Were The Days" The Hydro Races mean nothing to me in todays world, something that was free for everyone has turned into "if you was to play you pay". The "Thunder is Gone" in Thunder Boats

The twin hemi Chrysler Crew did that exact thing in about '76 when they moved the race north of the Evergreen Point bridge. It started coming apart when an engine blew a piston through the side of the boat and it nose dived and broke up.

Holy cow! It was a good thing that Jack Regas had been tossed out of the Notre Dame before Harrah's Club hit it.

I was on the shore just even with the collision. 15 years old. Not until I was home for the evening news did I know the drivers were ok. Notre Dame was a new design and could not tolerate the porpoising. Nose dive, tail in the air and the rest is on video. Heckuva noise too.

It was not Gilliam's fault it happened there was a hole right there all morning the Noter Dame was the only boat that bounced there it happened several times in testing before the race started.
