Saw this Christmas week 1964 when it played exclusively at Manhattan's DeMille Theatre. I was 11 years old and it was my first "downtown" movie. It was the Star Wars of my generation in terms of cultural impact.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken scene is also filmed in Miami. That KFC is still there! Also the scenes of Solo’s car driving around the streets look like they were filmed in Miami.

I understand Joeseph's frustration with the process of Goldfinger's forces making their way to Fort Knox and then into it, but it does serve a purpose. It establishes Goldfinger as a powerful threat and meticulous planner and it really emphasizes just how bad Bond's situation is. If Goldfinger has thought of everything, then when Bond is descending in the elevator and cuffed to the bomb, the audience must be thinking "How is he going to get out of this with so little time to detonation?". It's basically the 3rd act story arc where the hero's situation gets worse and worse until he finally reaches the lowest point and then begins to work his way out of the situation. And that is summed up visually by the camera being placed so far away from Bond as the elevator descends. He's dwarfed by Fort Knox and by the villain's power.

I love Goldfinger as a character and felt compelled to root for him throughout the movie. His plan was awesome, and he executed everything perfectly, not making dumb mistakes Bond villains usually make. His only flaw in his plan was that his lesbian assistant would suddenly fall for Bond. Otherwise his plan works, he achieved the fine art of crime, and banks would be open on Sundays everywhere!

Another great review. I think that many of the film’s slow parts and goofy bits are largely glossed over by what is maybe Sean Connery’s coolest performance as Bond. In this film he glides and prowls like a great dancer or an animal hunting prey depending on the scene. It’s compelling to watch. His interplay with Gert Frobe is provocative and fun and his chemistry with Honor Blackman is great. Even though he’d been cool and tough in the previous films, here he just catches a flame which has lightness and power in a beautiful balance. It’s a mesmerising joy to watch and I think that’s why many (especially casual observers) rank this as the best film. It’s not but he’s at the top of his game in it

Goldfinger is the ultimate Bond villain. In this film, Bond is Goldfinger's prisoner and until the end of the film, James Bond is a bystander watching what is happening. This film started the Bond sensation setting up the stage to make Thunderball the success it was.

I'm a lifelong Bond fan and my three favorites are Goldfinger, OHMSS, and Casino (the Craig version, obviously). And since Goldfinger was my first Bond film, and having seen it on its first release, nothing can ever replace the unique magic of that experience for me. And while I can nit-pick little moments here and there, and point out plot-holes, etc., I flat out adore this film. Jam packed with more iconic moments/images than any other Bond film of the Connery era, and with brilliant casting, classic score, and a plot that improves on Fleming's original, what's not to love? Yes, I'm also a big fan of Dr. No, FRWL, and Thunderball -- and YOLT too, for that matter -- but nothing, for me, has the goosebumb-inducing power of Goldfinger. My favorite villain, my favorite henchman, and a femme fatale named Pussy Galore who doesn't come off as a joke. Wow. This one checks ALL the boxes for me in terms of pure, stylish, clever enjoyment. And hey -- the golden girl, the Aston Martin DB5, and that Fort Knox climax, just to name a few classic elements -- all in the same film! I mean, come ON. Pure Double-0-Heaven. But, having said all that, in terms of capturing the true essence of the literary Fleming, OHMSS and Casino are superior. FRWL too. But no Bond film, for me, is as purely enjoyable as Goldfinger.

A legendary movie which started the Bond mania and passion that is still with us today. My third personal favorite after FRWL and Thunderball. Favorite scenes: The iconic entrance of Bond to the cabaret looking at his big crown Rolex Submariner as the bomb he set explodes, his introduction to Jill Masterson {this is my favorite Bond introduction}, and the scenes and car chases with the legendary Aston Martin. Great review guys

These reviews are so brilliant and are so in depth that when I rewatch them,I notice stuff i never have before
(And considering I've been watching them for almost 50 years that is unbelievable!)
Goldfinger was the first 007 movie I saw and had remained my favorite (until recently being replaced by Casino Royale!)
This was also,I think,Sean Connerys best and coolest performance ever as James Bond.
They have also tried to replicate all the main elements of this film in every single Bond movie that fo!lowed and that continues to this very day.
Pretty impressive for a 55 year old movie!

This was the first Bond film I ever saw circa 1992 and in a way it's the perfect introduction to Bond. Certainly the best of the Connery era. Watching it from a 2010s/2020s perspective, there's a few "they wouldn't have gotten away with that nowadays" moments and the Beatles reference dates the film massively but it really is the best showcase of the Connery era. 9/10.

When I first saw Goldfinger as a kid I was a bit underwhelmed, as I had already seen many of the later Bond films and I didn't really get what the hype was all about. But over the years it's grown on me and now it's one of my favorites. A quick note on Kentucky: for me as a European, it's not too bad a location, 1960s American upper south is actually pretty fascinating. I often find the European locations like England and France more boring.

Americans are good enough at making themselves into comic book characters in movies without the help of the UK. Just watch Independence Day.

Everyone is different. I think Goldfinger is the greatest of the Sean Connery Bonds. Dr No and From Russia With Love a close second and third (interchangeable really). You Only Live Twice next (Not one of the greats but Ninja's storming the volcano can't be beat and the Japanese location circa 1967 was fun). The only one I really found disappointing is Thunderball. Connery seemed to sleepwalk through that role. Other people disagree and that is fine. But everytime I go back and see Thunderball I find it underwhelming. (But we all have different opinions). Cheers everyone.

Anyways, after watching each movie I check these reviews and see what the consensus is. The variation of opinions when it comes to Bond is massive. Not only will some people prefer connerys era or Moore’s era etc... but sometimes if you also like that same era, your opinion on the best movies from the series and what it is that makes them work can still differ so much.

Goldfinger makes some odd choices. What always bothered me about it was the break from realism. Getting sucked out the window, the gold paint, putting a crushed Lincoln in the back of a falcon. The other thing that got me was how the whole thing comes across as a coincidence rather than a mission. Good music, good set design, great videography. It's strange because I really like Moore's Bond and they are far more unrealistic but it seems intentional and ok but with Goldfinger it never hit me right.

    • @rogerlynch5279

It had disturbed Gerd Fröbe as well. In his authobiography he had written that he almost did not take the role because of the logic flaws but he took the role mainly - for the pay check of course- and also he saw the Bond movie just as a fairy tale for grown ups.
Fun Fact: After this he did not wanted to play in something Frleming had written ever again. Guess he never had checked that CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG was a James Bond for kids also written by Fleming. There he had played the crazy king.

    • @johnnyfreespeech5815

Killing the gangsters after Goldfinger explained his plan and they agreed was weird. Also keeping Bond alive the whole time was weird. Bond winning pussy over came out of nowhere. Also, why didn’t oddjob kill Bond when he knocked him out in Miami? I never understood these choices and for me, these things hold the movie back. You often see this movie come in at number one on peoples top Bond movie lists and from that perspective (whilst it’s still a great movie) I think Goldfinger is overrated.

An honest review without nostalgia goggles, that's the way I like it. Thank you very much. Just because those movies are old and we love them doesn't mean we have to gloss over their flaws. You could have been a bit harder on Dr. No and From Russia With Love as well, those also have their issues. In fact, after watching your first three reviews from this series, I feel almost compelled to defend Goldfinger in comparison to the aforementioned movies, although I regard your final rating as fair and appropriate, and most points you raised are definitely legitimate.
Maybe that's just me, but every time I watch the Bond movies in chronological order, Goldfinger seems like a huge step forward compared to the previous movies to me. I can't help it, no matter how hard I try to appreciate the first two movies for what they are and for the circumstances under which they were made. That's the point, actually: With Goldfinger, I don't have to try. I put it on and I'm entertained straight away. I agree it loses some momentum once we get to Kentucky, but the 45 minutes between the opening gunbarrel and Bond getting knocked out at the end of the laser scene are still as good as anything the series has offered since.
So much of what the Bond series is today goes back to Guy Hamilton's direction of Goldfinger. You've already pointed out the pre-title mini adventure and the epic title song. There's also the Q scene. Q was a blank exposition device in From Russia With Love. It was Hamilton who turned him into a real character and established his relationship to Bond. Then there is the scene where Bond meets the villain socially early in the movie and goes on to tease him over a sporting competition or game of sorts. That has been copied numerous times and even survived into the Craig era. And on a more questionable note, Hamilton also introduced the secondary Bond girl that gets killed off as a sacrificial lamb. Two of them, in fact. But that brings me to another point why Goldfinger holds up so well and is still fun to watch 55 years later: Hamilton not only established a good junk of the Bond tropes - he already subverted some of them before they officially were a thing. Tilly Masterson's death is a prime example. The first girl is dead, now there's this new girl who's driven by revenge against the same guy Bond is after, like a Honey Rider 2.0. Surely she's going to be the main Bond girl, right? Nope, she gets killed off as quickly as she entered the movie. Casual audiences will always be caught off-guard by that, and it is very effective to establish Oddjob and his signature gimmick as a real threat. Another example is Bond tricking the guard to escape - of course he does, he's the hero, after all - only to be captured again shortly after.
Then there is the villain gleefully explaining his plan to either Bond or a group of potential business associates. This is often necessary to let the audience know what's going on, but actually quite stupid in-universe and more often than not leads to the villain being hoist by his own arrogance. It's funny that you made the comparison to A View to a Kill. That movie came out 21 years later, but plays it totally straight. The one guy who wants no part in the operation is killed, naturally, but the others go home to presumably tell their wives and kids about the great business deal they just negotiated. Goldfinger is smarter than that. Of course he's going to tell the gangsters part of his plan and Bond the rest of it. He sees himself as this great criminal mastermind and wants everyone to compliment him on his genius. But he doesn't let them get away. The gangsters have made their deliveries and thus outlived their usefulness. Why would Goldfinger pay them off and leave them behind as witnesses of his operation, when instead he can use them as subjects for a final test of the effectiveness of the nerve gas? As for Bond, him knowing the plan accomplishes nothing. He tries to contact the CIA and fails. Sure, he could have told Pussy Galore, but I don't believe any of the details of the plan would have been news to her. After all, she's in charge of the gas attack, and if she's that good a pilot as the movie makes us believe, she knows exactly what kind of cargo she's carrying.
Speaking of Pussy Galore, you made a good point about Bond using his seduction skills as a last straw after everything else failed. That just shows how competent Goldfinger is as a villain. It would have been easy for the writers to make him fall victim to his own arrogance. But he's better than that. He can allow himself to keep Bond alive because he is in fact in total control of the situation. He successfully prohibits all of Bond's usual escape and communication attempts. His one fatal flaw however is trusting Pussy Galore to handle Bond on her own without accounting for Bond's seduction skills. That's very much in line with his characterization throughout the movie. Goldfinger is highly competent when it comes to villainous schemes, but less so when it comes to romance and seduction, as evidenced by the fact he has to pay a woman to be seen (JUST SEEN) with him. Hats off to the writers indeed. Although I wish Bond putting his skills to use was portrayed in a way that makes me less uncomfortable while watching...
Needless to say, the barn scene is not my favourite part of the movie. For that I also have to go with the laser scene. "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die" has to go down as one of the most iconic lines not only within the franchise, but in cinematic history. But I'd like to give an honourable mention to the friendly old lady operating the gate to Goldfinger's Switzerland facilities. That moment when she pulls out the machine gun to empty it into Bond's windshield as he tries to escape never fails to crack me up.
One more thing about the final fight between Bond and Oddjob, there's an extra layer of genius you haven't mentioned: Not only does Oddjob get killed by his signature weapon in a clever twisted way, his demise is also a callback to the pre-title sequence, where Bond also serves death by electrocution. A "positively shocking" way to bookend things.

As for Jack Lord not coming back to play Felix... I'm a HUGE Hawaii Five-0 nerd, and immersing myself in the background of that over the years, I've gotten from several sources the reason he didn't come back was *kind of* the money? Basically he wanted some ownership and control of the franchise (which is the same reason he ultimately didn't play Captain Kirk on Star Trek, because Roddenberry and the network weren't interested in what he was proposing in exchange for taking the role, thus we got Shatner and eventually Lord got his sweetheart deal with Hawaii Five-0) if he were to reprise Felix. Cubby and Harry passed and the Felix role turned into the revolving door slot going forward.

I found "Goldfinger' as one of the series best. Gert Frobe fit the description of the character in the novel and, I believe, one of the best Bond villains. I was not convinced that the actresses Shirley Eaton and Tania Mallet played as sisters. I couldn't see any "family resemblance". Honor Blackman was perfect as Pussy Galore. The Aston Martin's abilities was a bit much but fun, and, now, iconic to the series. (Goldfinger even made light and laughed about it). John Barry, of course was wonderful. ( I even got the vinyl Soundtrack album before seeing the movie. And it still tells the film's story via the ears to the mind's eye.) Great review of a great film. One of the few films I never get tired of repeat viewing.

(the hoods gathering, the portrayal of Americans more generally). Re: credibility of plot and choice of locales I do though think the film is pretty faithful to the novel, which the earlier films tended to be during Fleming's lifetime. Interesting that your choices for your favourite parts each come from the second half of the movie given you said earlier that you felt the first 45 mins were exceptional. Can't believe neither of your favourite parts featured the Aston Martin! But keep up the good work fellas.

The gangster scene was such a big scene from the book that they just wanted to use it I guess in that broccoli / saltman haphazard way of adapting the books . In the book Goldfinger was actually going to rob Fort Knox so needed the gangsters . They just used the scene even though by changing Goldfingers end game it made no sense.

Great review. I agree with Scott on the Saint btw. Shirley was actually in a couple episodes. More Bond connection is Lois Maxwell appearing in one. I think the point of the gangsters in Goldfinger (at least in the novel) is Goldfinger gets them to buy in and rips them off, as well as his massive ego to kill them off and be the number one crook. Also in the book, Tilly had a much larger part and was a lesbian. Bond was perplexed why she was more interested in Pussy Galore, who also was a lesbian. I guess the studio thought that wouldn’t play for 1964 audiences.

In the movie, if you watch that scene again, you'll hear the gangsters plotting to take over operation grandslam for themselves after goldfinger had left the room to take care of mr. Solo. Goldfingers assistant hears the over intercom and takes the appropriate action....

Thx Joe, love your reviews, podcasts and videos. I think I read somewhere that the producers deliberately chose a blah Felix because they didn't want another cool Jack Lord type potentially upstaging Connery. I think your take on the JB seduction of Pussy G. is persuasive, especially in the context of more predominant interpretations of the scene; but while the criticism of the gangsters is valid, you may have overdone it a bit, as I don't think they're in the film for more than 5 minutes, if memory serves. Thx again, I always enjoy stuff, both fun & thoughtful!

I love this movie but, I do think it’s just a bit overrated. Yeah I know... that statement is sacrilege. But I see lots of people put this at number one on their lists for top Bond films and I really don’t think it’s the best. It’s still VERY good though.

Regarding Goldfinger blabbing the plan to the Thug's Convention and then killing them all... I used to think the same thing, how pointless, but later on I came around to the idea that he did it as kind of a last-chance effort at fool-proofing the plan; to see if any of the gangsters could spot a problem that had been overlooked somehow, and once it was clear they had nothing more to offer, it was time to divest himself of their company; permanently. =)
Of course that's just my internal thinking nowadays. There's really nothing in the movie at all to support that, so it's kind of a no-prize effort on my part.

I agree that Kentucky is on the lower end of Bond locales, but since Fort Knox IS in Kentucky, what else could they do? Which brings me to MY favorite part of the story: the believability of the plot. Certainly when the U.S.A. was on the gold standard, such a threat was destabilizing, but even today I think such an event (irradiating Knox's contents) would create exactly the havoc that Goldfinger & his communist backers would benefit from.

Obviously neither of you didn't like Cec Linder as Felix Leiter. And I understand you, guys. At least partially. Jack Lord was certainly a better choice. Although I don't hate Cec Linder at all! Funny thing is that Dink was almost horny when she saw Linder! She was like: "To hell with that handsome young world famous sex symbol! This older gentleman is what I want from now on!". Watch the moment they meet closely, it is quite a strange scene..........

I don't hate this film anymore but I can't love a James Bond film where James Bond himself is a prisoner for like an hour. People love this film for some strange reason and I can't be one of them. I ranked Goldfinger pretty low because I really don't watch this as much.

Sorry Joe but you're so off, the pacing and execution of this film is masterful, as is the assault on Fort Knox accompanied by John Barry's triumphant score. And Goldfinger is an exceptional villain, not a slob but very nimble for his size. Those "mirror image of Bond" villains are boring to me. But thanks for giving it an 8, at least you enjoy it.

This is a film that when I was younger I would rate the best, but as I got older it's dropped in my rankings. Don't get me wrong, it's Top 5 but not the best. It's so iconic though. Connery is at his peak. Goldfinger and Odd Job are the best villains and Honor Blackman is fantastic. What has increasingly bothered me is the campiness. What really sinks it is the elderly woman with the machine gun. WTF? I think Guy Hamilton just went too far injecting humor into the film. Still, it's a classic. (One of my other problems is that it has the worst Felix Leiter). There's no question that it's entertaining and really solidified the series and made it what it is today.

  • @theplasticdesert2408

I always felt that the things that weren’t required (hoods convention and the drawn out battle at Fort Knox) were there to make the series/ film a lot bigger than they had been up to that point. Which is good, just not executed brilliantly. And I’m guessing it was also to get more american bums on seats at the cinema too. Godfingers lair where he knocks off the hoods though is right up there with the best of them tho imho.

I don´t think the humour in Goldfinger is a problem except for maybe the duck-thing in the opening, which was pretty silly.
Otherwise I agree with a lot of what you guys say here. It´s a great movie but... There are a few exceptions. I do like the gangsters however. And ya I don´t understand why Jack Lord never returned as Felix Leiter. In this movie Leiter looks very old. The actor playing Felix in Thunderball was pretty nice too.

Love the reviews. But the mocking of older Bond fans and their love of Goldfinger put me off a bit (I'm pushing 60). Sure, you're talking about casual fans but the popular opinion of this movie is with merit. As great as Dr. No and From Russia With Love are, there's a magic to Goldfinger, in my opinion.

OMG you the perfect person to ask this question to. How you felt when James Bond said "It's as bad as listing to the Beetles without ear muffs." I'm asking only because when I was younger I heard from people from your generation that the only people that hated the Beetles was old people. So when he said that. I rooled on the floor with laughter. Then I said, James Bond is old.

    • @tomchris60

I saw Goldfinger when it returned to theaters in the late sixties. By that time, the dig at the Beatles only managed a few chuckles. Since then, the producers have wisely avoided pop cultural icons by name. The line does make Bond sound unhip. But you're right. For a brief time, the WWII generation treated the Beatles like visitors from Mars.

The reason he killed the mobsters is so he won't hafta share his money or let them keep his gold. It was just to show how devious and nasty he was as a person to show his mindset. Cheating at a friendly card game. Paying girls to be around him. Cheating at golf for no reason. I saw that scene n made perfect sense. Con them.get what he wants basically for free.

First off I want to say I love the James Bond films... However I absolutely DESPISE this entry in the series. I know that's an extremely unpopular opinion and probably considered "blasphemy." So let me explain.
The first major problem I have with this film is down to writing. There is a scene where Goldfinger tells a bunch of rich men his "evil plan." Then he asks them if they'd like to be in on the plan. One of the men declines and is allowed to leave but Odd-job follows the man and kills him down the road. Meanwhile back at Goldfingers lair Goldfinger murders the rest of the men... Why did he let that guy leave if he was just gonna kill them all anyway? Now you have a room full of bodies to clean up along with a body way over there in a junkyard to clean up. Also if he was planning on killing them no matter what why exactly did he waste all that time telling them his evil plan? Oh right he did that so Bond (and the audience) could overhear his plan. You could say I'm "overthinking" things and it's "just a Bond film" but that's not an excuse for bad writing.
The second and definitely most important reason I HATE this film comes down the character of "Pussy Galore." Worst name ever by the way... It's heavily implied (but outright stated in the novel) that she is a lesbian. She's very loyal to Goldfinger until Bond throws her to the ground, pins her down and rapes her. After this point she's "in love" with James Bond. The only reason Bond saves the day is because she switched out the knock out gas for fake gas. She is absolutely vital to Bond saving the day. The rape scene is the linchpin scene of the entire film...
You could argue that the scene in question is just a product of it's time. However to that I say Rape was just as wrong and horrible in the 60s as it is today. The fact that the film plays that scene in such a way that it feels light-hearted and innocent makes it all the worse. It really bothers me that nobody else seems bothered by this and this film for some reason is almost always at the top of everyone's "best Bond film" lists. This is by FAR the worst Bond film! Absolutely disgusting and utter trash.

He killed the gangsters because they were heard plotting to take over operation grandslam for themselves. Its obvious that he didn't rape her as she is clearly seen responding passionately to him.
