- We made a personal challenge to create homemade MREs and bring them along for a lunch date. We also tested out the Barocook flameless cooker while we were at it!

I came back in time after watching the most recent videos. I had to see where it all started.
I’m so glad you liked it enough to watch more!
I love hanging out with my kids when I can. They are all grown and off on their own. They have their own families now. It seems like the hugs get bigger and better as we all get older.
Same here. She has her own family and home now so it’s harder to get together.
I never thought about making my own MREs. Thank you!
I bet you could come up with some interesting stuff. Be curious to see what you'd create based on your dietary background. Maybe that would be a cool video!
Great video! I love that you got your daughter involved to pick out foods she would want to eat herself! This is a great way to get your family members involved in prepping their own preferred emergency food for a 48hr kit so the kit has food they would actually eat!
Thank you! It was a fun project and we are thinking of doing it again soon
Adorable seeing you and your daughter together!
Thanks! Hoping to get her back here soon.
@@dadbudgetadventures That would be fun.
Commenting to help the channel. 😊
I hadn't realized you were putting videos out for so long. 😂 I'll have to go to the start and catch up on things.
I’ll take it! It’s been a journey but it’s finally paying off.
I just found your channel. 😍
So glad you did!
I started watching your channel just a few days ago, but I think I have seen most of your homemade MRE videos. What a great idea. You have me hooked on the Barocooker. I am about to start a multi-week hiking trip (O.K. this coming summer). At one hot meal a day, $2 for a heat pack in an all-weather cooker beats fuel canisters and a stove. I will let you know how it works out.
I’d love to hear about it! I’m glad I helped you find something that might help you on your trip!
because of one of your shows I have ordered the Barocook and the Audicook!
Nice!
one comment to your daughter. she picked out the normal kool-aid packet. this makes a 1/2 half gal. look in the same section for the individual packets for 16 oz. water. the current military lemon pepper tuna uses starkist lemon pepper tuna. toss a couple tortillas in & you got it made. as to your expire date issue. i can usual get stuff that is good for a year. but it is also knowing when to shop & check the dates as the year goes along. for the european mre components check in the high priced foods section of your kroger. wasa breads is one. chips whatever kind you want. hit your gas station for the individual serving sizes. alot of the snack or mid day meal items can be found there. look at the skippey single serve line for your peanut butters.
All good points!
I ordered the flameless cooker. Hopefully, it will help my husband at work. No more fighting over the microwave. Will let you know how it works out.
That's great! I hope he loves it!
Both meals looked very good, and I agree, there is a morale issue to be considered.
It definitely needs to be a priority in a disaster otherwise things go south quickly.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
As much as you hate raspberry, my wife hates coconut. This would be important to us in homemade MRE’s.
Definitely. Each person picking what they like is the very foundation of this concept. I’d hate to have to rely on something built by someone who had no knowledge of what I like and don’t like.
I like your glass/stainless steel cup. Where did you get it?
That is a vintage glass from a set we bought at an estate sale. The bottom is lined with cork as a kind of coaster/insulator.
GREAT VID U 2, ALL THE STUFF LOOKED GOOD. Z....
This one kinda kicked it all off. Who knew we’d be here today doing this regularly
OH REALLY, HOW COOL. U ALL HV COME A LONG WAY@@dadbudgetadventures
If you need to add water or any liquid IT IS NOT AN MRE. An MRE is READY YO EAT. No water required. Preferred sure the 2 tablespoons of water for the flame less heater to heat up, but not required. An MRE can be ripped open and eaten straight from pouch.
You are correct although most MREs do contain drink powders. The “ready to eat” aspect pretty much refers to the mains and sides.
Are you talking about the drinks, the heater, or the rice? Because even an MRE needed water for the drinks and heater, and the rice was "a little dry" but would be edible straight from the package. So this is perfectly acceptable as an MRE.
mountaun house has the artic / cold weather mre contract. over in my pile of stuff is their freezedried sphagetti w/ meat that you find in the camp food section.
The dates are a best by date, not an expiration date. Most things are good and safe to eat long after the date.
Yes, but the idea is to start well ahead of that date so it can be as fresh as possible without risk of going bad.
How long does the Barocook produce heat?
Generally 20-30 minutes.
Minotaur trading company has components. I would also suggest cheesecake, and smores
That sounds yummy
The date may have more to do with what state you are in. Some state's have more outdated and short dated food on shelves than others.
Interesting. Sounds like some states are getting the short straw.
@@dadbudgetadventures has to do with left or right. And how well managed the warehouse is. Left states don't do well, right states do well half the time but get shorted when delivery has to run thru a left state to get there. ( trucks are being charged extra to go around left states to make delivery and then shorted payment because they cant make delivery on time because of politics driving thru a left state.
watching older videos.
Thank you! Glad to have the support.
Tuna and salmon are a little shy on calories
True. But at the time of this video the civilian market didn’t offer a lot of options. Fortunately that has changed and there are lot better choices out there.
you should grow a beard. message from the future. lol
😂
Since you made this, I have been noticing more and more, the raspberry flavored things in MREs are going away. I think there are many more people out there who dislike raspberry things. I don't much care for them either to be honest.
Wish I could take credit for that 😂
@@dadbudgetadventures Maybe you can. LOL
a company named 'thats it' does a blueberry & strawberry apple based fruit roll up / bar. still have 2 left from last fall. date says jan 2025.
You two did a nice job of creating MREs! Tasty choices!
Thank you!
Both MRE's look good. Gives us good ideas. Thanks. It is hard to find items that have 1 year shelf life.
It really is but that a standard for me for the videos. Feel free to build what you want!
Good job guys. i made a breakfast MRE, with organic short cook oats with dried cranberries and dried golden raisins, Dutch breakfast cake ,with homemade cocoa and a 1000 iu vitamin c drink, plus a large bottle of water. i added a serving of yogurt covered raisins to much on while i wait for the Barocook flameless heater to do its thing. i also made an accessory pack which includes a mini tube of toothpaste, a floss pick, a bandaid, travel toothbrush, baby asprin, and 4 pieces of gum. i included a small garbage bag and a piece of paper towel plus matches.
That's amazingly well thought out. Thanks for sharing!
OK found your channel and have enjoyed it. Went back and watched this one, you look a "little" different. One thing I would like to see in these is a list of the contents of the MRE in the notes section.
I’ve had a few people ask for that and the reason I don’t do it is purely selfish as it would destroy the algorithm. A lot of people would come to the description just to read the contents then click out once they had that down. It only takes a few of those before my retention time plummets and TH-cam stops recommending my content.
@@dadbudgetadventures I guess I can see that. Anyway keep up the good work. Thank you for the quick responce.
I love it. So fun to see 4 years ago.
This video was fun. Always enjoyed doing these with her.
Great idea! I've been studying the Barocook products and you provided a nice intro. Nicely made vid! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
i guess im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost my login password. I would love any help you can give me
@Louie Jayce instablaster :)
@Lachlan Khalid Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Lachlan Khalid it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
Peanut butter powder has a long shelter life and is available at Walmart!
I've heard that but haven't tried it yet. Might have to give it a go
