I’m was born and raised in California till I was 32, I’m 48 now. I currently live in Michigan but will be moving to Tennessee next year. That being said, CA has been expensive forever. In the early 2000’s I remember gas getting close to $5 a gallon although I didn’t hear of a mass migration to TN. At that time, the migration was north to OR, WA and ID. It would seem that since COVID, the migrations then pivoted to the east.
