Great rundown. As a Memphis native, I only have 1 correction. We are not a dry rub barbecue city. We're ALL ABOUT THE SAUCE! We like a sweet sauce and we like coleslaw on EVERYTHING!!!
No we are not! I ONLY eat dry rub and I live in Memphis. Everyone else I know is also a dry rub only type of person. Also I like coleslaw but not on everything on the side.
I live in Memphis and if you do want to go on a trip here, I would definitely recommend Shelby Farms and the lake and the playground and all of the trails there
We have a good bit of natural spots within a few hours too. There are also a few music museums and studios you can visit. Just use common sense. If you don't feel safe don't go.
Being a Memphis native. I would like to give a brief history of the city. The Founder of our great city named it Memphis because it reminded him of his many trips to Egypt. Like Memphis, Egypt which sits on the Nile River we sit on the Mighty Mississippi. Also, many people are unaware that Memphis was one of the cities used on the Underground Railroad for slaves seeking freedom to the North. There is another museum there called Slave Haven. I encourage you to add that one to your list while in Memphis.
Nice, but not smart...wish he had a Bible on hand to read about the issues that Memphis faced in the Old Testament. I’m African and names are very spiritual and they carry weight ... it’s unfortunate that Memphis is still a struggling city in 2020... I’ll drop one of scriptures you can research and see for yourself............... Ezekiel 30:16 Verse Concepts “I will set a fire in Egypt; Sin will writhe in anguish, Thebes will be breached And Memphis will have distresses daily.
There was this museum I visited in Memphis in an elementary school field trip I forgot what it was called but it definitely had something to do with slavery . We got to go underground to a piece of the Underground Railroad . They also had cotton .
As someone who has been born and raised in Memphis. 23 years here. If are not from Memphis and you come to visit STAY AWAY from Orangemound, and Fraiser and Do not go on Beale street after 11pm
I used to live in frayser for 10 years and it a great area. Sold my house for double. People who say stay away from an area are usually the one who causing trouble. Memphis is a great and weird place to live.

I went to art school in Memphis, drove a limo for the Peabody, performed dance choreography, had too good a time. I'd been away from most of 20 years, and a lot of my friends warned me, "You were here during a GOLDEN AGE for Memphis, and that's gone." A few years ago I started taking one of my kids to Memphis Tigers football games, and taking him around town, introducing him to my old haunts. My friends were wrong: that Memphis that I knew way back when is still there in abundance. As we were leaving town after our first visit together, my kid asked me, "Daddy, does everyone in Memphis know you? They act like they do!" And I had to say, "Look, Memphis is the world's biggest small town. You show them love, you're gonna get love!" I miss Memphis.
"Some areas are totally fine!... then 2 streets later it's NOT so fine". That's the MAIN thing to know when visiting here. As a local, I really enjoyed your segment. :-)
Your comment is so true. Do not venture to far off from Beale. Things can get a little “funky” and I ain’t talking about music. Been there 5 times. Hope things are well with you 🌴😎🌈Aloha
@@martinusv7433 no "tour guides" really needed. You can actually ask the hotel workers, restaurant employees, museum employees, locals on the streets (both black and white), even the guy with dreadlocks and gold teeth that you were assuming was about to rob you and they will all be friendly and tell you where not to go. Tourist rarely get "killed," phyiscally harmed, or even robbed. Cars can be broken into, but that's usually due to some enticing item left in the open.
It was a very fair review. It's not really that unsafe of a city as long as you use good judgment. If it looks dangerous, it probably is. If you feel like you don't belong, you probably don't. Respect yourself, where you are, and the people around you and you are pretty safe.
I'm a born and raised Memphian. I enjoyed watching your video. You nailed the hot tourist attractions and great safety tips. I was surprised though that you left out St.Jude's hospital. There's so much history to be known about it and how it's a vital part our city.

I live down town about a 5 minute walk from the Orpheus and I can say Memphis is not that bad... it is just certain areas that give Memphis a bad name. As long as you stay in the better areas of the city you have nothing to worry about.
catmodelt yeah it has changed a lot and within the last couple of years. I love living in the south bluff area. The downtown area has seen a lot of investment in the last couple years and the last time I checked I believe there was about15-20 billions dollars invested in new downtown projects and real estate. Give it another couple years and downtown Memphis will be worth twice as much as what’s it was.
Memphis native here, great review, never been to Graceland but did go down to it the day he died. Need to include Overton Square which is a great place for tourists at night, much safer but use the parking garage and better security in parking areas. Lafayette's is a historical music venue everyone should check out. Use UBER and be completely safe and legal. Thanks for making this! Honest and truthful!
I grew up in Memphis, your number nine the security section was spot on!! the barriers you talked about at each end of Beale Street correct once you cross over those barriers you're in no man's land good luck making it to your car!
Rendezvous is always what tourists flock to it gets tons of credit but WOW is it overrated if you've ever been to, uh, literally any other BBQ restaurant in Memphis. So many hole in the wall delicious places!!!
The most beautiful part of the city, and the most deserted, is the huge park by Mississippi River. It's unfortunate that it's not well maintained. Edit: just checked, it's called Mud island
tom lee park is what you are talking about. some days yes it may be like you saidduring the day. but i drive by it alot and most evenings its covered with people walking and enjoying the peaceful sunsets. mud island has more than one section. on the south end its a museum and ampitheater. the north end is upscale houses and apartments.
Being born and raised in Memphis, this was fun to see! Y’all should come by Memphis Rox for an excellent non-profit and a lot of fun! You’ll have to wait until social distancing is loosened, but its worth it!
I was just in Memphis for the first time yesterday. I was on a vacation all over the south. The people in Memphis downtown are very very friendly. I really enjoyed it there.
Walter, so glad you enjoyed Memphis. I live just cross the Mississippi River bridge in Marion Arkansas. Two towns west of Memphis. So happy you were able to be greeted with southern hospitality. Thank you for sharing and as always traveling grace.
Also video!! Some people really just wanna tear down my city down but fail to see just how beautiful it is. While you touched on being safe (because we do have our fair share of rough spots), you still highlighted a lot of the beauty!! Your enthusiasm was everything!!
This guy is pretty spot on about Memphis. I've lived here my entire life, 54 years. The Beale St. Music Festival and Memphis in May are prime times for tourists to come to Memphis for all the festivities and World BBQ Cooking Championship.
I was nice seeing the good side of Memphis and the better quality it has to offer people traveling. Born and raised here we see so much of the negativity. Definitely come with a hungry appetite!! New subscriber here!!
@@oldgroucho2203 Yup. But look at how Memphis ranks statistically. It is the worst of the worst in the U.S., and there's no glossing over it with "well just in certain parts."
I went there as a tourist. I had a great time. Any city you have to be careful. Where you go. I was on tourist bud. All the famous places, riverboat ride and Graceland. People very nice. It has some poor run down areas, as every city does. I had a nice time. It’s a nice friendly city. Only one negative, the drivers are crazy, no patience, even with a pedestrian right of way. I always hurried when crossed the street
Another fun fact about Memphis. Expect to get robbed or into a fight when you walk down Beale. I’ve lived here all my life and avoid that street at all costs.
I came here as my pal visited Memphis and he said it was dead and full of down and outs , he first went to New Orleans , then after Memphis he went to Nashville and i never thought hewould say New Orleans was the best .
so awesome to see as a Memphis native. I live in Atlanta now and I have CONSTANT cravings for Memphis food and experiences. Drinking on Beale, nachos at Central BBQ, sushi at Sekisui, I miss it all. The Bass Pro Shop in the Pyramid is a slight laughing point for most of us. Love it (:
Memphis will be a trendy city by the end of the decade. Warm weather, affordability, and unique cultural appeal with big city amenities and connectivity will pull people in. Especially as peer cities get congested and overpriced.
Born and raised in Memphis and I'm going to tell you something I love it the people are great and the people are kind as long as you mind your business don't be snitching you get along with everybody I've been in this city my whole life I've never had one instance with a black man that was racial never had any racial things come against me a lot of that is a bunch of reporters hyping up stuff and trying to get a story this City is in love with each other we love our people and our people love us
I was born in Memphis I have been there at least once a year for my whole life. I have never been to Graceland nor have any of my Memphis family. The BBQ is fabulous, my favorite is Tops and for Southern food The Cupboard on Union. Besides The Civil Rights Museum, The Brooks is a nice museum and I love to go to the Dixon to see the gardens. Mid-Town is a way better place to hang out than Downtown.
I'm finally coming to Graceland on the 8th of September staying at the Graceland guest house I'll be touring Graceland on my birthday on the 12th of September 2022 I'm sooooooooo excited I've been a Elvis fan since I was 8 years old my late mum Was a massive fan of Elvis greetings from st Helens Merseyside United Kingdom ep4eva tcb taking care of business Elvis style
Just seeing this video... my family visited Memphis about two weeks ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Slave Haven is a must as well as Sun Studio. I have three teenagers and they all raved about Sun! Also, we stayed at an Air BnB in Overton Square and found a nice breakfast place called Bob's Barksdale Restaurant. The staff of that establishment were first class and gave us a real sense of southern hospitality.
I need more time out there!! I got a short trip next month. Just to visit an old friend from job Corp school!! So not only do I get a day in memphis but a d ay in Lexington Tennessee I'm just excited to go!!

Thank you so much. As a life-long Memphian let me tell you “Memphis loves you!” Great and accurate review. Visitors please don’t be out late, like grandma used to say “nothing good happens after 10pm” it true, listen to grandma and you’ll be safe.
Im coming to Memphis from the uk in February 2024 and one thing I have never understood about America is what is " downtown " is it the main part of the city where all the shops bars and nightlife are ? If so then what is " uptown " ? Or do I have it the other way round? We don't use this terminology in the UK.
In 1993, drove from Ozark, AR to W. Memphis to p/u someone from Greyhound Bus station. If I had known about Memphis we would have hit it before driving back to Arkansas!!
Im going in October (driving from Nashville) and will be there for two days - day one plan on seeing some of the memphis site then day two is Graceland , a little apprehensive from what I see online but hoping things are ok given I plan ok beinh in main tourist areas... 🤔
Hey! I’m a Memphis native and here are some tips: - don’t travel alone on foot, have a buddy with you. We do have some crime - one and only BBQ is the best around! Their side items are just as good as their bbq. Very important - Graceland is in a bad part of town. Just get on the interstate and go, then get back on the interstate and get out. There’s nothing around Graceland but Graceland, so don’t go on a joyride - Overton square is a fun and safe place to grab drinks and have dinner. They have fun places. I like the Zebra Lounge for drinks, Lafayette’s for live music, second line is fancy southern food, Babalu has really great margaritas - Memphis botanic gardens in the spring and summer have beautiful flowers and is family friendly. Lots of trails to walk and the summer concert series is great there - Memphis is a place where you’ll need a car more than likely. Downtown is walkable, but if you want to go to Shelby farms, the botanic gardens, or anything out east, you’ll need a rental car. Uber would be pretty expensive to go out that way. If you want to stay downtown, the zoo, and to Overton square, walking and Uber should be good
Keep in mind that if you plan to go to the "open bottle" part of Beale Street, you will need to pass through a gate and show ID to prove that you are drinking age. Also, on the dry rib BBQ. There are two types of BBQ people in Memphis. Dry rub and wet BBQ people. You can will find both.
I live in Memphis. The thing is both of my parents grew up here and I’ve only lived here for 3 years. All of these were shocks are true. Also, Memphians don’t go to Graceland. It’s always funny to see people so excited going there as I’m going to school.
We passed through Memphis but never really stopped. The most impressive thing I remember is the smell. Smelled just like a paper mill. New Orleans is the same way. It's probably because of the river.
The 11th thing that will shock you are the stray bullets coming through your car windows when you drive around! Good ole Memphis, keepin' ya on your toes!
@@JohnWick-np3gr its sadly true. Living in TN is great. Memphis has its problems... inner midtown and downtown are like chicago/detroit/LA/New york with crime problems. It has even been #1 for aggravated robberies at times. Lock your car doors when you roll through...
Native living Dallas, but get back often. My favorite night spot is Mollie Fontaine’s. It’s one of a kind with great food, drinks and the funkiest vibe. Check it out.
32, born and raised in Memphis, and I've still never been to Graceland. Now it kinda feels like I gotta stick to that and go to my grave with that statement 😂 anyway I appreciate you mentioning how friendly the people are. Also, if you come to Memphis, DRINK THE WATER! I've been all over the country and overseas, our tap water is mind blowingly good.
@Bethany Jones me too I grew up around the corner from his house and still to this day, I have never visited. I didn't even walk up to the wall and sign my name or nothing😂. I used to work, live and play around there. So many memories...and thank you for saying how good our water is. I literally just told my brother I can not move back to Phoenix or nowhere else because of the Water!!! I hate bottled water. I drink my tap water all-day everyday. I'm Gucci 😁
Big River Crossing. Walk across the River. It’s - by far - the best view in town; and it’s free. I live in Germantown, 21 miles away. I ride my bicycle across practically every weekend. Yes; you would be SHOCKED at the level of bicycle infrastructure in this town.
I will say, the food was amazing and worth the wait...but wow was service bad everywhere we went. Takes a long time to get drinks and food at your table.

I went to high school with a girl whose parents own corky’s. I will never eat at corky’s because of her 😅
J Wayne Payne’s
Rendezvous is always what tourists flock to it gets tons of credit but WOW is it overrated if you've ever been to, uh, literally any other BBQ restaurant in Memphis. So many hole in the wall delicious places!!!
Definitely Central BBQ!
Just go to one and only or Germantown Commissary
The most beautiful part of the city, and the most deserted, is the huge park by Mississippi River. It's unfortunate that it's not well maintained.
Edit: just checked, it's called Mud island
Went in February and yes, beautiful!!!
Yeah. Mud island has such promise. I've been to some concerts there
Also check out Tom Lee park and the big river crossing
tom lee park is what you are talking about. some days yes it may be like you saidduring the day. but i drive by it alot and most evenings its covered with people walking and enjoying the peaceful sunsets. mud island has more than one section. on the south end its a museum and ampitheater. the north end is upscale houses and apartments.
They're building new condos, restaurants etc...on mud island( Mississippi River).right across the street from Tom Lee Park 👍
Everyone thinks of Nashville when they hear Tennessee, but Memphis is the spot to visit. Great positive video about an amazing city!
No they don’t bro you don’t have to bring up nashville let people enjoy Memphis nashville & Memphis only 2 big cities in Tennessee they think of both
Being born and raised in Memphis, this was fun to see! Y’all should come by Memphis Rox for an excellent non-profit and a lot of fun! You’ll have to wait until social distancing is loosened, but its worth it!
I'm from Memphis too and LOVVVEEEE Memphis Rox. Chris is a great instructor for climbing!
@j77 It's a hidden gem in South Memphis, across from STAX Museum!
@j77 Cool beans! You will be amazed, TRUST me!
i will keep that in mind im always looking for a new adventure in this city.
I was just in Memphis for the first time yesterday. I was on a vacation all over the south. The people in Memphis downtown are very very friendly. I really enjoyed it there.
No we're not unless we want to scam someone.
I’ve been to Memphis once and fell in love with Memphis so much history !
Long live the king!
As a Memphian, I've always said: 'There is no bad barbecue in Memphis. Be sure to check out Cozy Corner on North Parkway.
This guy is pretty spot on about Memphis. I've lived here my entire life, 54 years. The Beale St. Music Festival and Memphis in May are prime times for tourists to come to Memphis for all the festivities and World BBQ Cooking Championship.
Don't forget Crosstown Concourse! Great use of the old Sears Crosstown building.
OMG dont forget the BBQ Bologna sandwich topped with slaw at Kooky Canucks! Great video
As someone who lives in Memphis stay in the nice part because if you don’t just be safe just saying
Fr
You are not wrong. Lol
On Guud!!!
I was just thinking about that, and then said "Wait a minute... We've dealt with Baltimore for thirty years, so it can't be worse."
Most people in Memphis mind their own business and if you're not up to anything shady or being incredibly stupid, you're pretty much ok.
Make sure to visit our amazing beautiful Memphis zoo
It’s not beautiful
The Stax museum is a MUST see.
It is awesome love that place. Music lovers especially would love it.
Civil rights museum is unreal, one of my favorites I've been to.
its depressing but very educational
I was raised in Memphis in the 60’s great town until King was killed!
I was nice seeing the good side of Memphis and the better quality it has to offer people traveling. Born and raised here we see so much of the negativity. Definitely come with a hungry appetite!! New subscriber here!!
Not enough negativity, apparently. Everyone is hateful and angry in this over grown trailer trash of a city. - A Memphis native
like any big city, depends what part of town you are in.
Ducks at The Peabody are a decades-long tradition. One of the stories that Ole Miss frat boys started it. It's quite charming.
Love it (:
Have you been back since this comment? And have you been to interstate bbq?
Very very careful out after dark. Hell, even during the day.
Why
“I was walking in Memphis. I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale.”
When I went to Memphis a year and a half ago it had the best BBQ I've ever had.
Memphis will be a trendy city by the end of the decade. Warm weather, affordability, and unique cultural appeal with big city amenities and connectivity will pull people in. Especially as peer cities get congested and overpriced.
Another thing about Memphis...while Graceland is stupidly expensive (and in a bad area), you'll find the low cost of living very nice.
Born and raised in Memphis and I'm going to tell you something I love it the people are great and the people are kind as long as you mind your business don't be snitching you get along with everybody I've been in this city my whole life I've never had one instance with a black man that was racial never had any racial things come against me a lot of that is a bunch of reporters hyping up stuff and trying to get a story this City is in love with each other we love our people and our people love us
How is the Gus Chicken in Memphis different from the ones in the other states?
Check out the Art galleries. Memphis has a number of them and they are top quality. A lot of museums and historic properties to visit as well.
Memphis Humidity will kick anyone's butt but our water is some of the best in the south
True and true
I have never experienced a better food city to this day better than Memphis, TN. The food is simply amazing!
I need more time out there!! I got a short trip next month. Just to visit an old friend from job Corp school!! So not only do I get a day in memphis but a d ay in Lexington Tennessee I'm just excited to go!!
Yep from someone who lives in South Memphis don’t bring ya ass over here stay downtown. Lol we crazy over here 😂😂
awww, we aren't that bad in S. Memphis
Chuck Stewart lol which side of South Memphis you from, cause my side you hear shooting every night.
@@Angelslife46 are u proud of that?
TOWNCAR PLUSH SMOOTH who ever said I was lol just trying to let them know.
TOWNCAR PLUSH SMOOTH I will always love where I come from. Lol this is my home. Do I love my home, am I proud of it hell no. But will I always represent it hell yea. Lol you will always be proud of where you come from because it make you who you are. So to answer you question yea.
Local here and I FINALLY WENT TO GRACELAND! LOL.
Found your site by accident I lived in Memphis and you video brought back a lot of memories. Thank you!
Hey! I’m a Memphis native and here are some tips:
- don’t travel alone on foot, have a buddy with you. We do have some crime
- one and only BBQ is the best around! Their side items are just as good as their bbq. Very important
- Graceland is in a bad part of town. Just get on the interstate and go, then get back on the interstate and get out. There’s nothing around Graceland but Graceland, so don’t go on a joyride
- Overton square is a fun and safe place to grab drinks and have dinner. They have fun places. I like the Zebra Lounge for drinks, Lafayette’s for live music, second line is fancy southern food, Babalu has really great margaritas
- Memphis botanic gardens in the spring and summer have beautiful flowers and is family friendly. Lots of trails to walk and the summer concert series is great there
- Memphis is a place where you’ll need a car more than likely. Downtown is walkable, but if you want to go to Shelby farms, the botanic gardens, or anything out east, you’ll need a rental car. Uber would be pretty expensive to go out that way. If you want to stay downtown, the zoo, and to Overton square, walking and Uber should be good
Thanks. Renting a car is more expensive than uber though.
@@supersaturn956 Not if you are planning several trips. Some of the mentioned places are spread out.
"Some" is quite an understatement. Memphis is notorious for its criminality (and for a reason).
I love your video! Thank you
Keep in mind that if you plan to go to the "open bottle" part of Beale Street, you will need to pass through a gate and show ID to prove that you are drinking age. Also, on the dry rib BBQ. There are two types of BBQ people in Memphis. Dry rub and wet BBQ people. You can will find both.
We Love Memphis Tennessee from Iran 🇺🇲❤️🇮🇷
Thanks for this video. Reminds me how awesome my city is
Glad I could showcase its awesomeness
You also can visit other towns close to Memphis like Germantown and Collierville because those places are really fun
WONDERFUL places to live. Lakeland as well.
I live in Memphis. The thing is both of my parents grew up here and I’ve only lived here for 3 years. All of these were shocks are true. Also, Memphians don’t go to Graceland. It’s always funny to see people so excited going there as I’m going to school.
Can’t wait to check this land out!!! Love live musics❣️
We passed through Memphis but never really stopped. The most impressive thing I remember is the smell. Smelled just like a paper mill. New Orleans is the same way. It's probably because of the river.
Old girlfriend drove through and said it smelled like you know what. I think it's just the odor of rot, decay and mass desperation.
Actually that smell is only in one area but the interstate goes right by it.
As a 48 year old born/bred/ lifelong Memphian, I can honestly say he's pretty much on point.
Right, the heat will take your breath away! I still love my city!!
Don't forget the Cooper Young Festival!
In Memphis now - great video and very helpful. Unfortunately many things are closed due to the Covid-19 but what is open is worth visiting. Thanks
As a native Memphis thanks for the great review. Love my hometown
Thank you Anthony!
I hate Memphis
I had a good time there, as soon as I can I'm coming for another visit!
The 11th thing that will shock you are the stray bullets coming through your car windows when you drive around! Good ole Memphis, keepin' ya on your toes!
🤣🤣🤣
@@JohnWick-np3gr its sadly true. Living in TN is great. Memphis has its problems... inner midtown and downtown are like chicago/detroit/LA/New york with crime problems. It has even been #1 for aggravated robberies at times. Lock your car doors when you roll through...
Yea it is
Native living Dallas, but get back often. My favorite night spot is Mollie Fontaine’s. It’s one of a kind with great food, drinks and the funkiest vibe. Check it out.
What shocked me was the awful drivers and the high crime rates.
Lol try living here like that every day.
I'm Gucci 😁
Graceland is fun , lots to see, good food. But overpriced imo.
If you're really from memphis you've never been to Graceland, hands down
Shock#11: Memphis is a beautiful city...a Middle American jewel
Memphis born and raised, moved to Arkansas 21 years ago. I would never move back to Memphis for any reason.
They don’t want you anyways, Jerry.
I love Memphis Tennessee and I love Beale Street!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Dont forget the number one thing.. The ghetto darkness that has destroyed Memphis!! Thats all you need to know.. PERIOD!!!
Big River Crossing. Walk across the River. It’s - by far - the best view in town; and it’s free. I live in Germantown, 21 miles away. I ride my bicycle across practically every weekend. Yes; you would be SHOCKED at the level of bicycle infrastructure in this town.
Shout out to st judes as well
gibson’s donuts i can say with confidence is the best spot on earth. also gus’ fried chicken is so stinking good
I shouldn't watch this before dinner. Now I'll need some fried chicken or bbq.
Their Cabelas looks pretty epic.
How is the summer heat compared to St. Louis?
Go on top of the Peabody garage for a great rooftop veiw of Beale street. $2 parking
I will say, the food was amazing and worth the wait...but wow was service bad everywhere we went. Takes a long time to get drinks and food at your table.
On Beale Street
