They weren’t that good in 1996, just had a very favorable schedule outside of two games, Florida & Alabama. Even their Peach Bowl win was against an unranked Clemson squad in which they escaped (barely) with a win.
@@RevAlSharptonzyeah, that's a nice stat, but, their two losses were to arguably 2 of the top 4 teams in the country. They deserved the respect they earned during that season. They were a solid top ten team. Too bad for them that they had a couple of steam rollers on the schedule.
NCAA football has changed a whole lot in the last 30 years especially how teams are ranked. LSU by far was one of best teams in the country that year. Gators run and gun offense was damn near impossible to stop that year, look at what they did to FSU in the championship game.

That’s like saying FSU wasn’t as good a team as Florida that year strictly based off the blowout loss they suffered to the Florida Gators at the end of the season which turned out to be the Gators first championship. 56-21. FSU spanked us in the regular season and I to this day believe Spurrier out coached Bowden in the championship game. We had Wuerfell in shotgun all game unlike the regular season. That’s a prime example of explaining losses, sometimes teams don’t show up on game day and sometimes they just get out coached.
