For today’s class we are going to kick it up a bit . At IV University we like to give you the more traditional commodity items. We want you to walk before you can run, well today we hope you have your running shoes on because we are gonna sprint. Today we are going to discuss Duplex basket strainers. Which brings us to todays did you know…
DID YOU KNOW : according to research 80 percent of hydraulic malfunctions can be traced to fluid contamination from filters. Strainers protect hydraulic machines , pumps, and equipment. Strainers and duplex strainers like we will be talking about today help guarantee high reliability and reduce overall costs of operation.
And so to talk about these strainers our good friends at Titan flow control, were gracious enough to give us this Duplex strainer to show you how they work. Now, all the IV U groupies know how much I love the butterfly valve, but this beauty gives it a run for it’s money in looks. In the immortal words of Clark Griswold’s dad from Christmas vacation, it’s a beaut
But before we get into how the this bad boy works, lets talk briefly about what one would use a duplex strainer for and how it differs from a traditional Y or basket strainer you might be familiar with.
The Duplex strainer or twin basket strainer is a type of filter built into a fuel, oil or water piping system… and it is used to remove large particles of dirt and debris. The system also contains a valve handle placed between the two baskets to divert the flow of liquid to one strainer while the other is being cleaned.
Duplex strainers are mainly used in various industries such as process industry, power industry, chemical industry, oil and gas industry, pulp and paper industry,
basically any industry where Strainers are used to remove hazardous elements that might cause partial or complete breakdown of operations if they get into the system.
Unlike a Y-strainer or standard basket strainer that has to be shut down to clean -
duplex strainers don’t have to be, so they can be cleaned any time. With quick-open covers, you don’t even need any tools. No tools, no shutdown - A big savings in time and effort and great for production.
The body of duplex filters are most commonly comprised of iron, steel, stainless steel, or aluminum bronze, though duplex strainers made of other materials are available. The filter or basket of the strainer is made of stainless steel.
The Titan Duplex Industrial Basket Strainer like the one here… has some great advantages, with its ease of operation being number 1.
Because of it’s great design, It is able to operate on a continuous basis, never requiring the line to stop for maintenance tasks to be performed. This is due to the two baskets being used, which operate independently of one another. Once one of the baskets becomes full, the flow is channeled to the other basket, allowing the full basket to be removed and cleaned out. The design of Duplex Industrial Basket Strainer makes it a great option for applications where lines cannot be shut down for maintenance to take place.
In addition to an easier maintenance, duplex strainers have high particle holding capacity, which provides less pressure drop through the strainer.
Duplex strainers can also be fabricated like you see here to be customized to the need that the end user would want for collecting debris and protecting the pumps, valves and everything in between.
Most Duplex Strainers are available with threaded and flanged ends in a variety of materials.
All cast iron and carbon steel units are epoxy painted to resist rust. They can be fitted with virtually any configuration of perforation or mesh lined straining elements. Straining elements can also be constructed from special materials such as Alloy 20, monel, hastalloy C, and others.
Well that is all we have for you today, we want to thank Titan Flow Control for sending us that beautiful cutaway it’s a beut clark… ya I already said that … and its professor jim. I didn’t go to 4 years of PVF college to be called clark.
Also thanks to ivalco.com, where you can get 24/7 online ordering for over 25000 line items… and counting by the way, with speedability, which is in stock error free shipping or delivery within 2 hours or less. Have a great day everybody
