Mike ,one of my favorite practice days recently was playing the three side of the son and rumba clave patterns on the bass drum and adding Elvin's 'e' of 3 [on the bass drum] with 2-3 and 3-2 right hand cascara ;a lot of fun and it can sound really funky.You are my favorite internet dude.
Great Lesson Mike! The Mike Mozambique was pretty awesome too! I always tell my drum students to experiment and have fun with songs once they get comfortable playing them the way they're performed - this is a concept I borrowed from your blueprint and house analogy.

Love the “ exploring the neighborhood” analogy. I have stumbled into some pretty fun stuff doing just that. Both on the kit and while walking or driving around . In either scenario you also discover quickly when you’ve made a turn into the wrong neighborhood. :- )
Brilliant. It will take me about a month to get this grooving, but then I can drop it in Jazz band. I predict my director will frown at first. He’s an expert in world grooves, and he’ll question that Hihat, but maybe he’ll let me do it.

Sounds rad! It would be really helpful to have some explanation of the cultural context for this groove. Like what actually *is* a Mozambique? In an age where difficult conversations of cultural appropriation are being more widely embraced, I believe as drummers we all have a responsibility to develop a more thorough understanding of *where and why* these patterns came to be widely played around the world. It is easy for drumming students to find a pdf/watch a video and learn the notes of a "world" groove without having to recognize of the specific history/spirit of what we're playing. To the cultures where this music comes from, these grooves often serve a much deeper purpose than being just another tool in a versatile drummer's toolbox to show off on Instagram. Not sure if this is addressed in any of your other videos, but this is the first "world" groove video of yours I've seen. Maybe some references to recordings/readings would help these grooves start to feel more meaningful out of respect to their specific cultures of origin. Thanks for your consideration, love your drumming Mike!
Naw, you never really do anything yourself on this instrument. We are always standing on the shoulders of giants. I learned it from boos, then variations from Gadd and others, then found my own path.

This is a 1965 Gretsch Round Badge in Progressive Jazz configuration. The modern version of this would be a Gretsch USA Custom in 20, 12, 14 :)
