Strauss said he thought Wagner was an operatic titan and his approach to Wagner was to simply sail by him. He knew he could'nt ever musically cross him. Still, the influence of Wagner is definitely there in Strauss' early operas such as Guntram. Strauss had his major break through as an opera composer with the masterpiece Salome.

The title is an interesting conceit, and the documentary is well-done. However, I'm not sure it quite fits the Tupac and Biggie dynamic... and I don't just mean the tragic endings both met. The big thing there is the rivalry, which might fit better with Wagner and Brahms (or at least their followers)... possibly Wagner and Strauss' father. I would also proffer Strauss and Mahler, since they were both friends and rivals, but ultimately admired each other (Alma's perspectives to the contrary). Perhaps by extension, Strauss and Schoenberg might fit a similar dynamic as well... at least if one brings in the latter's more vociferous acolytes.

I agree 100% with you. But don't even mention Alma she was catastrophic for Mahler's reputation and legacy. It's best to take what she said as fanfic than anything else.

Simon Callow is a wellm known Wagner and Strauss fan and a brilliant actor in his own right. I agree that his passion for the entire subject really comes through in this video.

I dislike those comparisons with today's musicians no how these modern music creators are anywhere near for me to classical musicians. Today art feed our hunger and there is little beauty in it. Just what I think in few words. A bit of criticism.

‘Corn’ in this context does not refer to ‘maize’, but to ‘any plant that is grown for its grain, such as wheat.’

"Tupac and "Biggie" shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Strauss and Wagner.

I think you can´t compare chopin with Bach here - chopin the titan and what is Bach ?? Wagner was in conflict with all composers of his time.

I think in my opinion these two great ARTIST compared to two rappers is rediculas they my be as popular as these two rappers why I don't know but I listen two both artist there is no comparison hands down. I don't like rap is sound like two ten year olds making rhymes with music. That's all it is. Maybe because I'm 66 years old and I have listen to classical music half my life. I'll stick to old school. Can't git with rap.

Munich is quite beautiful. For me, I like Strauss but I tolerate Wagner. Many of Strauss's tone poems are excellent. His opera's are interesting with some beautiful arias. Wagner is tiresome. His operas are way overblown and even though I have nearly his entire output in DVDs and CDs, I have not been able to sit through them twice. I do like a handful of excepts from a number of operas. Atmospheric and evocative. But the other music are intolerable. Extremely repetitive and boring. I can see why Wagner has a cult following, his music can reprogram your brain. It's like that annoying drone that won't quit. But to the general audience, there is just not enough good music. He is just way overrated IMO.
