This is a short how-to video show an easy trick to clean diesel, electric and multiple unit model train wheels. This is a useful trick if you have a model that is not running smoothly, whether at all or at certain speeds. In this video, we have a brand new Heljan Class 35 Hymek. It ran OK but wasn't great out of the box. This trick allowed me to see if it was the wheels, a problem with the contacts, wiring issue to the motor, circuit board or motor issue. All you need is a simple pair of crocodile clips.
Some interesting things from this video:
- Heljan shipped a loco with weather powder of the wheel contact surfaces
- Attaching power to the contacts, it ran fine, quickly narrowing the problem
If the problem still exists, with power applied to the contacts, the next step would be to move back down the path, so you would apply power to the other end of the wires attached to the contact. If that worked, you'd know the problem is with either the solder joint on the contact or the wire itself. If that doesn't fix the problem, you would apply a lower amount of power to the motor and see if it runs ok, which would help you determine if its the circuit board, DCC chip or blanking plate, or the motor itself.
You can apply the same technique to steam locomotives, but be very careful as the pickups for steam locos tend to be smaller and more fragile, so you can easily damage or bend them out of shape.
