I didn’t really like David in the first game, but playing before the storm just really made me hate him. Past trauma or not, you don’t get to jump in as any kind of step-parent and immediately demand obedience and respect. Those things are earned over time with effort. No-one gets to come in and just replace a parental figure.
These variations (especially the talk about trust) make me realize how truly sad Chloe is. She’s far from perfect, but man I feel awful for her.
