What’s ironic about this scene is that it is the father who seems much more accepting than the mother.

Sometimes is really is like that. When my former stepbrother came out (my father and his mother are now divorced), his mother threw herself into a narcissistic pity party and meltdown where she didn't come out of her bedroom for three days. Despite my father's own extreme shortcomings as a father, he was the one who told her she needed to get right and help her son, that he was going to be experiencing a lot of turmoil and that a lot of kids his age struggling with their sexuality turn to substance abuse and/or suicide.

So when my cousin came out as gay his parents kicked him out. Then, his mother had a near death experience and an emergency open heart surgery. After she woke up she realized that if she had died on that operating table her own son would not come to her funeral. She also realized that if her son were to die before her she wouldn't be invited to his.
These two realisations caused my aunt, a proud, republican, christian lady to accept and reconnect with her son. She also accepted all his friends, some of whom were middle eastern, gay, and Muslim. She also accepted all her son's boyfriends and his husband with open arms.
I wish more parents thought about situations like this when disowning their LBGTQIA+ children. About how they'd feel if their child died with the last memory of their parents being one of rejection and pain. Or about how they'd feel if their own child wouldn't show up for their funeral.
Maybe they'd realize that their kids are more important than their homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia. Maybe.

I agree. However, there can be a double edged sword...a lot of people de-transition and feel that after surgery something was missing, when they expected it to make them feel whole. I would love to support anybody who chooses what they want, but the grey area does exist and I would feel so badly to support a friend or family member who ended up feeling that way...like somebody should have fought with them to figure out who they truly want to be before going the surgical route. Its very heartbreaking. Just as heartbreaking as not letting someone be who they think they wanna be. Its so difficult...

usually in movie and tv . you don’t see black fathers in their child’s life. and if they are it’s very little because their toxic masculinity makes them think that only the woman should raise their children. but in this scene you hear about a black father who was not only in his child’s life but also did everything he could for his children making sure they lived in a positive environment to be creative and express who they are. and the fact that the father corrected himself after misgendering his daughter just makes me cry tears of happiness.

I LOVE THE DAD, dad won me over he may have not understood but he always tried to be supportive. even when Blanca said Candy instead of her name prior and the dad called her Candy was a sign of respect for me. respect that he understood his daughter chose who she wanted to be and he stood by it.

A beautiful fact for you all-
Actress playing Candy’s mom is a famous Transwoman model
Angel is based off this woman
I saw a video talking about the characters based on real People and events of our community’s history.
I saw the video before watching this episode
And was pleasantly surprised when she appeared.
That’s amazing casting and I am so proud of our community getting the honor and recognition we deserve
    I’m not Trans
But identified with Bisexual my whole life
That’s the only label I’ve accepted because we’re all multidimensional
I was on the committee in college and and been active within our family for years-
Even choreographed shows for drag Queens and Taught People how to walk and dance in heels.
    This show is amazing ❤️

Thus entire scene is a message to parents: Your not guaranteed to leave this world first, but regardless of who goes first, never let the last goodbye you say out of love go unsaid. Your child is who they are, and while you are there to guide, protect, and teach, you are also there to support, love, and understand. When it's your time to go, or theirs, let them know that.

I wanted to say that MS. Ross's performance touched me so deeply. She finally had her moment of glory. The episode is well written, full of emotion and beautifully acted. The way she resolved her all of her relationships by visiting each person after death, especially with her parents. I watched this episode more than once and cried each time. I pray that she is nominated for an Emmy, she is a brillant, beautiful and vulnerable. I finally understood where she came from and why she was the way she was. Thank you Angelica for the amazing and touching character that you created.. I am going to miss seeing you on Pose ! Love you girl !

this episode has such a special place in my heart, especially with her fathers love. the day i watched this episode about 2 years ago, my father had a heart attack. he was thankfully ok but it was definitely a wake up call for me. i took my parents out to dinner the next week and finally told them i was trans and wanted to change my name. i was so scared that they would hate me or that this would be the final push for them to let me go, but i’m so glad i did it. this last christmas my mother gave me and my sisters the same gift, a necklace with our initial. when i opened mine and saw the “a” for my name, i finally understood what candy must have felt getting her dollhouse. it will always be the greatest gift i have ever received 💖

But what baffles my mind even more than that is how one could turn their backs on and hate that which came from you. I don't think I could. She said "You know, your teen phase was probably the hardest. Yeah you never ran away or snuck boys in like your sister. You never stole and we never had any big arguments. But all those things were familiar to me. You, talking with you was like living with someone who spoke another language. I had no clue how to connect with you, there was no guidebook on how to deal with the specific issues you were going through. And I think that made you more lonely. I just thank God you found friends that didn't steer you wrong."
