This brings back sweet memories for me. The school district I worked for had a 42 CCKW that they had purchased surplus in about 1949. It ended up in the transportation department where I went to work in 1976. It was used primarily checking bus routes in the early morning after snow storms and drifting. Was also great for pulling buses that managed to drive in the ditch or get stuck in a drift. Ours was a cargo/troop carrier as it had wood side racks that part of them folded down into bench seats. I drove it from 76 until 2008 when I retired. It was a wonderful truck Hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mint.
The strange shift pattern is because it's an overdrive 5th. gear. I have a 1943 CCKW (Yellow Coach Division) with 2,700 original miles. It was a forest fire truck delivered to Nevada when the Japanese were sending over the balloon bombs. Great trucks although I prefer my Studebaker US-6.
When vehicles had engines in them that sounded like tractors you know they were built with pride...and to LAST. Thanks for bringing this old girl back to life and sharing it with us!
And you just know the truck was never abused or driven off road. This truck was built to be used and abused and keep on going. Can't imagine what Alaska looked like when it first went up there, you know the roads it had to travel were not even wagon ruts and for it still to be around proves it was built to last.

When I was in the National Guard in Maryland, we had a 1952 Studebacker "Deuce and a half". It ran really rough and after reviewing everything, it needed new points. I put in a request for ones and was told that they were out of stock. So, I did what any good motor sergeant did, I ordered a whole new distributor. Got it in about a month, pulled the points out, put them in the truck, put the distributer on the shelf and ran the truck with new points in it. It ran just fine. Anyhow, that's the way you did things in the service. BTW, I ordered all new tires for it. Guess who had to install them, ME! all ten of them. This truck had split rims, very dangerous to mess with. Had no problems.
What a find, this channel just keep getting better and better. That welder will be a nice addition. Can you imagine finding a 2020 Kenworth hidden in the bush in 70 years. Critters have chewed through most of the wiring harnesses The DEF turned to stone 65 years ago All the plastic has rotted off or fallen apart Going to need more then a new battery and a squirty bottle of fuel to get it running.
"Where does he get all these wonderful toys?" When i was a kid, we didn't have tonka toys and baseball gloves, grampa would say "you want something to do? go make one of those old trucks run!" (he owned a trucking company and pointed to a row of old chevy trucks from the 40's)..we got a few to run!

I like how you illustrate everything you do and how you work on things alone you're working alone and my heart goes out to you I love to see those old relics run the way they sound because I had uncles who served in World War II and I just love the sound of those trucks! I love to see you start up that old diesel welder. That would make a fantastic video! Because I am proud of you and I commend you for your drive and effort and making of great videos I don't worry about what other people say how you sound like you sound and illustrate your videos great! This brings some old memory's back.... My grandfather was in world war II and the Korean war he worked in the motor pool and had a farm in Buffalo New York Springville of which he bought several old military vehicles from auction that were in crates before I was even born... He had one of these old GMCs exactly like this 6x6 it was an army air corps fire truck grandpa just had a flatbed on it for hauling hay but let me tell you what it might be hard to believe but my grandfather had that thing chains on all 10 tires put that thing in super low range second gear that thing would hammer up any Hill they would rival any one of my buddies rock crawlers not in the rocks like rock crawling but climbing around in the mountains the Steve grades that thing would climb were absolutely astonishing but love those old military trucks man super cool find..... this brings me back a buddy of mine got a 1943 gmc cckw 6x6 but the suspension was riped out and he needed a tracked vehicle because he lived in a heavy snow area and he thought it was cool to have one and he got a good one it was a full cab, it had a winch, and it had a gmc 270 and it still has the original bed on and what we did is put a new front end in and a new steering system , fixed up the drive system, and added parts from a yanmar b37 excavator (the track system) and converted it to a half track and it is a beast. now he uses it as a work vehicle and a rescue rig we also added a industrial grade warn winch in the back of the bed, customized the bumper for strength and so if he hits anything it can take the hit and converted it to a 12v system, it has a onboard air-tank with a industrial grade compressor, a heavy duty mig welder, a generator and a large tool box, and we added a snow plow system in the front, light bars, working lights beacons on the roof and we added extra gas can holders so he can have fuel for his stuff and storage for supplies for himself and anyone he helped. we also had custom front tires that are filled with polyurethane and has spikes in-beaded in them for the ice and had custom tire chains made for the front tires and had custom tracks made for snow and ice.
Part of me can't grasp that someone would collect these rolling sculptures but by the end of your vids i see the appeal. A very original collection indeed.
It even sounds factree!! The deuces from my era got turbochargers added and made that whistling sound I can still hear.. The 5 tons had power steering and a little more go..what an upgraded status change that was. 19ought84 Good times

I'm jealous of the space and equipment. Impressed you're doing this on your own! There's a lot of holes in the firewall including some that go right into the cab itself, so those are good to get welded up if only to avoid inhaling the fumes. But geez, you're not far from having a regular runner there. A bit of pounding on those fenders, clean up the body, paint, and you've got a good rig.

These trucks (as many old vehicles) just ooze an almost ridiculous amount of character and personality. They seem damn near alive. They definitely want to keep running.
I had one of those in Palmer in the 80s, chopped to a 4x, with the winch and a-frame boom on the front, I used it to build log homes in Palmer. That thing would start right up in the middle of winter, sitting out in the log yard. I marveled at its dependability many times over the years. Not a lick of trouble with it.
Ooohhh yeeesss try that with any later model equipment, I have plenty experiences with them, I was always very sorprised to see the high quality of those equipments. Me and my dad had one of these back in 1994 and convoyed it to France from the UK with another 500 or so ex military trucks and jeeps etc for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Was an amazing couple of weeks.
ya can get the welder running then sell it to make more funds to fix other stuff, them machines will go for like 4000$ in my area. sweet truck. i use a similar method to squirt fuel into carbs, i got a antique blow torch, fill that thing up with fuel/cleaner and it shoots a stream about 4ft long. plus it doubles as a gasoline blow torch. hell, you could probably straighten out them fenders with a mallet and a piece of timber, wont be too much work and itll make a huge difference in appearance. also ya can run triple fuel filters, once the first one plugs up remove it then run the other two then repeat, eventually youll get all the rust out
Hi BackyardAlaskan Cool old CCKW. Just thought in case you didn't know. On the front axle steering knucle i run a 50/50 mix of molylube grease and 90w gear oil and it works great to lube the drive axle and the knuckle seal. Good luck, R.

77 years old and still running ! Despite a long and hard service, this truck is amazing.

Great find .🇺🇸 My son found a 1964 international truck with dump and side racks A barn fine 1hr later it was running back on the road or Field V8 drove home with no brakes a ok now super good truck free purrs like a kitten and roars like a lion 🇺🇸👍🤔cjd wash state .

Me and my dad had one of these back in 1994 and convoyed it to France from the UK with another 500 or so ex military trucks and jeeps etc for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Was an amazing couple of weeks.

ya can get the welder running then sell it to make more funds to fix other stuff, them machines will go for like 4000$ in my area. sweet truck. i use a similar method to squirt fuel into carbs, i got a antique blow torch, fill that thing up with fuel/cleaner and it shoots a stream about 4ft long. plus it doubles as a gasoline blow torch. hell, you could probably straighten out them fenders with a mallet and a piece of timber, wont be too much work and itll make a huge difference in appearance. also ya can run triple fuel filters, once the first one plugs up remove it then run the other two then repeat, eventually youll get all the rust out

Hi BackyardAlaskan Cool old CCKW. Just thought in case you didn't know. On the front axle steering knucle i run a 50/50 mix of molylube grease and 90w gear oil and it works great to lube the drive axle and the knuckle seal. Good luck, R.

Wow that was perty cool for it to run that good. Might be the generator that's looked up if it's a direct drive. I think it would be cool to see that old welder run.
