      I like the little touch where where you put a progress bar which indicates how long a block of text appears on screen. I do the same thing with my videos. I'm surprised more people don't do this.

    0:34 For those curious. Apps have about 10 to 15 seconds before the device quits the subprocess and just shows the notification as it was received, no processing applied

    I’ve kept notifications turned off for a few years on any app that doesn’t need it for this reason. Would be interested to see how other mainstream apps like TH-cam, Discord, Telegram, Snapchat, mail clients, etc behave.

      We just wanted to highlight a phenomenon with this work and raise awareness about what apps can do when a push notification is received.

  • @alex.figueroa

    Disabling the notifications prevents this from happening?

    • @mysk
      @mysk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yes, but you have to toggle the option "Allow Notifications" of the app off. Allowing the notifications while disabling the alerts isn't enough.

    I know it's been said, but, like make a freaking website and/or blog post for this. Just showing a bunch of text in a youtube video is painful. Also like seeing the full logs of the captures would be nice as well, with anything redacted that should be...

    Is it true that iPhone users can now see if their contacts are ignoring their calls and messages? Example: iPhone user texts Android/iPhone user. Android/iPhone user doesn't respond, but Android/iPhone user continues to use other apps on their phone.

    how much of these information do these apps already have after you installed and opened them once, seems like the only relevant tracking information is the boot time here, other device related information they already got it, no?

    • @mysk
      @mysk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes they do collect the same and much more when they're active on the foreground. But this is just another technique to refresh the device signals as frequently as possible.

      It talks just as much... The main reason for rooting and installing a firewall to block a lot of this stuff. But still there are apps that will need access to be able to function. That is why I prefer a good web browser to run Facebook, X, LinkedIn etc, instead of the apps.

    4:45 so, and what is in this data?
    Basically it's an Apple jamb. And what are the risks that cunning and quick-witted minds from large corporations will obtain information about my phone?

  • @EvanMooreZ
    @EvanMooreZ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    As an mobile app developer, who understands the importance of this information you’re claiming is privacy invasion, that is transactional data. For example, if a push notification is opened within 2 minutes, we can use that to understand the effectiveness of the notification. Also, push notifications are expensive, so it’s important for us developers to not nag you with notifications if you don’t open over a period of time so we can ghost unsubscribe you to save on our costs.

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      This is privacy invasion. Don’t paper over it with your nonsense

    • @mysk
      @mysk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      We are also iOS developers. We believe that sending the system uptime, battery status, display brightness level, device available memory and storage, and much more has nothing to do with assessing the effectiveness of notifications. The apps we demoed in the video don't just ping a remote server. Plus, Apple already provides developers with a console and sophisticated dashboard showing the main KPIs about the notifications to help developers evaluate the effectiveness of their notifications.

    • @aaroncenter6384
      @aaroncenter6384 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Also, notifications are no replacement for Ads. A user has requested a notification about something they wanted to know, that is it. As a developer, using this information to target "ad notifications" is an abuse of the system.

    • @EvanMooreZ
      @EvanMooreZ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@aaroncenter6384 notifications function like email. It’s no different.

      I am also an iOS developer. And this is a grave concern to any user who cares or not about their privacy.
      Ask any normal user what they think of tracking in the background, without their knowledge, for ads? They will get upset.
      For reference, that is almost the definition of espionage.
      Borderline evil privacy practices.

      Thanks a lot for this feedback. Ideally, you should discover this video through reading our post on X: x.com/mysk_co/status/1750502700112916504
      The video is broken down into multiple chapters so you can skip to the chapter you're interested in, at least you could skip the slides right away. We posted videos in the past without having a context in the video and we got the feedback that viewers didn't get what the video was about, hence added the introductory slides. Moreover, the description of the video is detailed enough that you get the point without watching the video. I'm not sure how you discovered this video, but the source that pointed you to this video should have referenced our post on X. We do have a blog to share our more complicated findings.
