Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been using Meshmixer for a few years to create my own 3D parts, and modding STL files of other makers, but was struggling to convert 3D surfaces to cut out of other materials for, just like your example, helmet parts (visors to be specific) Great, another maker has gone to all of the trouble of modelling all of the parts of the helmet, but you don't necessarily want to 3D print everything. Now I'd got as far as generating face groups, and creating thin 3D meshes of a visor. Your tutorial was the missing link - taking that mesh and making a flat pattern for cutting out of PETG sheet. I can't say I was impressed with Punished Props solution, but that's just me.

This is absolutely brilliant and *exactly* what I needed. Absolutely flabbergasted thank you so much. I wish I could just figure out how to do this only in fushion 360 personal though. It's clunky to go through all these different programs but hey Its done

Oh wow. I've been looking for a easy means to convert 3D files into foam templates. Initially I would have to unfold via pepakura designer to which I would spend hours getting clean templates. This looks time saving.

When I click unwrap it is always placed far outside of the space and it won't show up in the svg file :( How do I fix that? Aligning it wih the origin or whatever doesnt help.

You have to have the flat selected when exporting the SVG that is usually the issue mesh. Select View in the top menu and then 'show objects browser' make sure the flat is selected and then export
