I think it’s not a matter of what’s really happening harmonically, but a matter of getting that same effect in an easier way.
D is the root of the II chord, the 5th of the V and the 9th of the I, so it’s a good note to concentrate on. That’s why the chooses it to play all this modes in D.
On the II (Dm7) he plays D Dorian, cause, as he says, it is the corresponding mode (same notes as C major). So no mysteries there.
Now, it’s on the V (G7), the dominant, the most tense chord, where he moves away from the tonic in search of more exotic colors. This provides him with some very jazzy notes. D Locrian has the same notes as C minor: Bb (minor 3rd), Eb (minor 6th or 13th), Ab, (minor 9th). That’s a lot of flavor! And D Phrygian has the same notes as Bb major: Bb (minor 3rd), Eb (minor 6th).
On the I (Cmaj7), D Dorian equals to coming back to C major (but emphasizing the 9th). D Mixolydian (same notes as G major), just adds the augmented 4th (F#) he likes so much.
I’m a classically trained musician, and this is how I understand what he’s doing. I hope I was clear enough to help those who didn’t understand it and that they can also start approaching their improvisations this way.
Can you clearify what you mean by he goes three 5th away in opposite direction with both of the possibilities? I got quite confuse about that :D thank you!
Hernán Renom
Hey mate, sorry to involve in conversation like this but D Phrygian have not the same notes like A major.D Phrygian is the 3 th mode from Bb major , which have to flats Bb and Eb. Hope that’s ok. Cheers
Sidnan Dedic You’re absolutely right!! My mistake. I must have been thinking of D Lydian. Thanks for the correction. Will edit my comment. Cheers!
@Herman Renom, your explanation makes way more sense. I think it's more helpful (simpler) to know what the modes are related to the tonic key, not every chord--very confusing. Then, to emphasize a certain scale degree, just SAY that! I basically had to do all the work you did in order to make this practicable, e.g., playing a Dorian over a ii chord is simply playing Ionian on the tonic (which you were already doing) with the ii chord tones emphasized. At the very least, if you are going to talk about modes over a chord, keep it consistent and use the chord (ii on ii, V on V) you are playing on.
Yes, Rich is PHENOMENAL!!!! Not only is he an incredible bassist, but he's also a great instructor and a very cool and humble person!!! That's a beautiful-looking and sounding Ken Lawrence bass!!!
I was lucky enough to meet Rich. Coolest, funkiest bloke I've ever met, so down to earth and such a great tutor and musician
A great point of view, really inspiring to study new way to improvise, thanks 👍🏻
A concept beautiful in its simplicity, and as always with Rich, great playing!
Man, when he did that D Locrian thing, I had to pause the video and take a moment to let my shock subside. Before I heard it, I was like, "What are you doing, dude?" But then when I heard it, it was BRILLIANT.
Michael Bradley-Robbins To me, it sounds terrible, but hey if what you wanted is dissonance that does it.
JoseitoEdlVodao Well, I do listen to atonal music for fun sometimes, so I guess it's not everybody's cup of tea.
EXCELLENT
EXACTLY WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR!
Thanks guys 😎
Fantastic. Completely new approach to the 2 5 1 despite I studied it ages ago. Very refreshing!! Thanks Scott!
I'm a professional Bass Player I play all over and I'm a very good soloist, however after watching some of these guys solo using the different scales it has really taken me to the next level of soloing, once these patterns are learned you become a soloing king in any key... its crazy

Mind officially blown! I'm trying his Rich's approach right now and it sounds awesome. Especially the dominant mode over the major chord. Scott's and the other instructors videos are always inspiring.
Rich Brown is the most modest, charm and friendly guy I have known, besides his enormous talent and musicianship...wou!! amazing bass player, I salute you master!!!
Thanks so much! This is an amazing tutorial. Opens up the empty spaces in the improv arena.
This lesson is Gold ! Thanks Scott and Rich for that !
Dude is sooo fluid. I love his sound.🤙🏾
I know it's only a snippet of the whole lesson but this has made a lot of sense!!!! Lots to play with
Very informative lesson.
It makes so much sense to have the freedom of where to take the sound you want, but having a decent gameplan on giving the notes a certain feeling at a certain time to keep it semi-consistant.
Thank you Scott! Very enlightening way to look at structure.
Amazing solo thanks Scott's for sharing this.
Very helpful bass modes lesson. Thank you so much, you guys are heroes.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND KEEP PLAYING THOSE BEAUTIFULL BASS SOLOS
Woaw,thats a masterclass,thanx for posting

Great video. Dorian on the II was a given, but I would have never though of playing Phrygian over a V. Sounds great. Thanks for the tips.
This is some good stuff!!! Maybe one if not the best jazz bass or guitar (can be applied to guitar too) improvisational tutorial I've seen in some time.
So BEAUTIFUL concepts papa
Thank you
Beautiful lesson.
Beautiful! Thank you!
Thnk you ver much i'l try to use these on all my next bass solo's.
Thanks for sharing - this makes a lot more sense to me than the traditional arpeggio orientated approach.
GREAT bass noodling by Rich on those skinny bass strings!! Really good stuff! :D

Rich Brown! My Man!!!!!
Really cool tips!
Another good one, thanks!
Wow... this is tricky and amazing.
Thanks you so much Scott
Great video! Thanks!
great lesson!
This is awsome mr.scot.... So coollllll... Thx sir
The coolest thing about this is getting an example of how a master of the instrument thinks about composing a solo.
Sweet I saw this B4 in 2018 it's still Sweet!
I learned modes years ago, but always kind of kept it one mode per song centered on the key -- plus major or minor pentatonic to create the color and tension, which results in a kind of boxy -- no pun intended -- boring rock n' roll sound. Had never thought of playing a different mode for each chord change. I mean, what can I say, incredibly simple but my mind is blown! Learning new tricks from the pros, thanks!
I recently discovered Rich purely by an accident of the TH-cam Algorithm. REALLY appreciate you having shared this!
Ahhh...I got it!!! To be no rule, still we have to start with the rule.....Tq, Mr Rich Brown!!!
it was my favorite tv sound track too, and I could'nt watch it without being on time to hear the music of it. BIG UP FROM FRANCE BROTHER and by the way I love your impro, it is so f--cking lyrical.
Peace, love, & Happy New Year from Toronto, Canada. And thanks so much for your very kind words. Means a lot.
Rich did it yet again 👏👏👏👏
Love it!
This is a great video !
Thank you very much!!!
I thought wtf, that s so obvious, why I didn t think about before... then I realized that just play D minor melodic on this G7 and u it s like u play Mixolydian #4, and it sounds really cool. Thank you Mr Ray Brown!!!
Amazing🙌🔥
BOOM! Brilliant
Awesome concepts
clear. thanks !!!
This is foundational. When musicians get this, the world is your oyster!
workin through the modes! :)
that was that was really cool thank you
More Rich Brown please!!!
Ive been learning from Rich Brown recently, he is a really good educator.
Dude is sick!
Awesome!
He`s incredible.
You hear solo,s by musicians and wonder where they get those notes from, this is the first time i,ve ever watched a musician explain how to organise your soloing over a II-V-I to make it as simple as possible and yet retain that precious tension and relief over both Harmony and Melody absolutely priceless thanks so much for this i play the saxophone as well as bass guitar so i,m finding new ideas all the time Thanks Scott
Yo Stephen, great to hear you enjoyed it man! :)
Quand j'entends ces solos, cela me décourage, je me demande si j'arriverai un jour, mais je continue à bosser, merci !
@@romainftz2289 Si une personne peut y arriver, tu peux y arrriver, il suffit de jamais lacher :)
