PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE As a teen who's been playing classical for 10 years, I learned the theory but not how to apply it. I'm trying to make the switch to jazz (it just seems so much more fun), and, during quarantine, videos online have been my only source of guidance. Thank you so much!
If you've been playing for 10 years then I assume you have at least moderate reading and technical skills. So now what I encourage you to do to help you improve with jazz (mainly improv) is to transcribe pieces that you like (listen, learn how to play, then write them down) and transcribe the chords as well. Once you do that, you can find all the II-V-Is and take the licks from those parts and incorporate those into your own improv.... Wow, that was a lot... Good luck!
It's the Beginner's Mindset. Always something to learn, even in going into the ABCs again. As an artist I keep going back to the fundamentals, and there's deep wisdom hidden everywhere.

Agree! Some way that mirrors the keys so we see it correctly would make so much of a difference. Now I'm all "hmm... He says C, but I'm pretty sure that's an E... Wait a minute. To the left of two blacks is to the right of two blacks from his perspective". Music is like my third language, but as with my two other languages, I'm not able to read mirrored.
though I think it doesn't work if the V itself feels unnatural but that's okay because you can just play dominant chords cycling around the circle of fifths until you get where you wanna go lmao... yeah the mind has been blown o.o
You should definitely look into some more channels that explain music like this. Learning the theory behind the music is like when Penn and Teller show the technique behind the magic trick. It's awesome and really helps you appreciate the craft.

Love this. I already know this stuff, but it's still entertaining to watch you teach it! It'd be awesome if you made more videos like this but went deeper. I'd to love to know more about jazz theory.
Time for an overhead cam shot of the keyboard when explaining chord progressions and leading tones. It will be easier for most people who are at least a little piano literate... and you’re a good teacher.
Ive been watching youtube for years, and ive never cared about youtuber mech... until now why is that design so cool. the white with the black keys is so so so clean
Man where you made those 4 keys work with each other... that might have been the most eye-opening use of the ii-V-I I've ever had someone so patiently explain to me. Thank you very much for this video!!!
Charles! I love all of your content, and I have learned so much in addition to tons of laughs all the time. Could you possibly put more graphics on screen of what chords you are playing to help keep things clear when you are explaining a concept? Nothing crazy, but like when you put the 5 and 1 up when you explained how you did the Imagine key changes. Keep up the amazing work. I can not wait for what comes next. Thanks for keeping a smile on my face throughout some rough times!
This video just cleared up so much for me. I knew about the ii-V-I progression in more of a theoretical and basic level, but this just made it click for me in terms of practicality. Cant wait to start utilizing this in my practicing.
You just earned my subscription sir! The way you broke this video down helps me understand a lot of the vocabulary I was aware of but not knowledgeable with
I already knew the content content but the way he explain things maked everything come alive, even if i know where he's going with the explanation. This is soooo easy to watch.
I like this tutorial and the use of ii V to make key changes feel more natural is cool, but I really liked it when I switched your ii V I voicing to to ii V I7 IV7 (right hand f,c to f,b to e,g,b to e,a,c) and then back to ii. It takes the floaty aspect of the first two chords and extends them.
First time watching any of your videos. The fact there was nothing to learn for me in the video allowed me to focus more on how you're explaining things. And I think the quality of your explanation is astonishing!
Thank you so much for this. I’m a classically trained tuba player, and my college schedule didn’t allow for jazz theory electives (technique and educator courses took those spots). This certainly put things in the right perspective for many different levels. Awesome! I find that jazz guys really love tritones, and my limited extended harmony understanding has me scratching my head as to why this works and it’s functionality.
Pleassseeee more videos like these!! There are so many music theory videos out there that are just showing dry theory but don't really explain how to apply and use it. This video is great for people who aren't exactly beginners and know the basic theory but can't actually do much with it yet ;) please keep making these! Im always typing in the search bar "how to spice up chords" and it gives me zero hits. But this is exactly the type of stuff we need!
I discovered your channel recently and then stumbled on this video and, this has helped a lot! I'm currently trying to learn the piano after many years of wishing I would and your explaining of the 2-5-1 suddenly made so many things make more sense.
Hi Charles! It's the first time I write to you. Can you tell if there are other ways to change from key to key? Adding the 5th chord (dominant) was great, but now that you added the 2-5... It's awesome! Just wanted to know if there are other tools to make those changes. Thanks for your videos!!!
Thank you so much for these teaching videos. I'm one of those annoying guitar player/singers that knows almost nothing about theory but still tries to play and understand anyway. Simplified, detailed explanations like this are exactly the type of musical content I need and love!
I honestly would love if he could explain the absolute basics. Because I just feel so calm when he talks about it. I can understand even if I don’t know everything.
Charles, please please please do a series on this - on your teachings, you have explained something I could never trully get! If you had lessons I'd totally do them, I wanna play the keyboard but don't know how to learn. You my friend might be a great internet teacher!! Keep up the amazing work, love your videos even though I know so little about music and the keyboard/piano.
I'm trying to learn the fretboard and I'm practicing the Circle of Fifths progression. I IV vii° iii vi ii V I. I'm spending a lot of time looking at the voice leading of each chord so I can really understand it. It's taking me a while, but my piano teacher is encouraging me to go at my own pace.
This is a good question. 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is the new key. Any new key. Charles demonstrates later in this video. 2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key. 6 2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key. 3 2 5 1 is a key change. ... This reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently on: Why learn jazz standards. It motivated me to accelerate my efforts to learn harmony.
The thing that made me crazy is at 11:00: "Once it resolves, that's a pleasing sound to our ears because it makes sense," and yes, yes it does, because THE UPPER NOTE OF THE G MAJOR CHORD IS THE LEADING TONE OF THE C MAJOR SCALE AND ITS RESOLUTION IS WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. All that talk about how critical the leading tone is in the 2-5 resolution, gets us all primed for this key insight, and now here are we are at the 5-1 resolution and it's just, "a motion that feels complete." Well sure it feels complete! The leading tone's resolving to the tonic! It's what makes this cadence sound so...authentic. Like, this is literally the one thing that I remember from studying voice leading (okay, that and contrary motion is better than similar motion, which I still think is a damn lie).
DUUUUUDDDEE I've been struggling to gain an intuitive understanding of the ii V I for YEARS and you made it SO EASY.The phrases "leading tone" and "common tone" swam to me from long-forgotten band memories and you BLEW MY MIND when you did whole "v in front of every new key" trick. I have a whole new understanding of the keyboard now. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you are AWESOME and I'm BUYING A SHIRT. I would love to see further videos, perhaps deconstructing how keys can change within a song? BLESS YOU HAVE A NICE DAY
at the end you running through those chords with the 5 in front sounded so good! You have an incredible amount of skill man. UGH I could listen to you play all day!!!!
I was trained classically for 10 years but SUPER struggle with basic theory, which was evident to my instructor who never taught me. I would just read and memorize pieces, and the band I was apart of was the same way. Just play the letter chords given, no improvisation required. This video is truly an eye opener for me! I've felt the drive to create music for forever but didn't have any tools in my tool belt. Sincerely, thank you for equipping me with what I've been lacking! ❤️ keep on creating, man! You've got (at least lol) one die hard viewer behind you!

Charles Cornell this is how you can tell you’re just a good content creator, you actually like give a shit about your audience and we all give a shit about you

I'm actually really eager to get some spending cash and blow it on that black on white keys hoodie. That design is awesome and I NEED it.
I've only ever been able to make the notes sound pretty together, but never learned why, or how to play. The math of music is so pleasing to hear it's hard to explain. Like unlocking something in the brain...
Thank you for explaining this topic so well.
I like you when you meme, but I love when you teach something. It's insane how your passion comes through.
14:07 "So lets connect these key changes with V chords between." *plays it*
Me: "Mm, that sounds cool.
14:25: "It's still a little strange ..."
Me: Oh, yeah, that's strange sounding, not cool at all.
Me in soo many videos😂
You can trust your ears :P
If you like a sound, turn it into music!
Yess, that's how jazz works lmao
I went into this thinking “oh crap, I’m not gonna understand any of this” but, I was proven very wrong. This video really helped in explaining and simplifying all of this “music lingo” if you will. So thank you dude!
Love that bit of insight about putting 5 in front of key change. Brilliant!
"Not a single person asked for it"
I asked for it...
big brain question: are you single, tho?
@@brunodays Dang that is smooth
It's so sweet that you're down to earth teaching the people who enjoy music without music theory background. I mean you've been a fun person to watch to applying advance even fascinating theories in your videos and seeing this makes us glad knowing that you love your audience. Thanks bud!!
Charles. Thank you for using your talent and incredible skill to show and educate us so much man. What a blessing it is to see your vids. Cheers from Costa Rica!!
Making me fall in love with Jazz a lil’ more every day.
I swear I have never ever came across such a great video explains 2-5-1 without it confusing the audience with voicings, modes, etc.. Great video keep making more of these please!
Seconded! 💙
Amazingly, it is more genuine and real when the audience don't ask for a specific content. Good stuff.
THANK YOU!!! I’ve been looking for a video that explains this but none of them have made as much sense as this😂
Ive been watching youtube for years, and ive never cared about youtuber mech... until now
why is that design so cool. the white with the black keys is so so so clean
Man where you made those 4 keys work with each other... that might have been the most eye-opening use of the ii-V-I I've ever had someone so patiently explain to me. Thank you very much for this video!!!
Pure brillance....in the way you break everything down.....you make complicated so easy to understand....great explaination......brillant video....
Very clear and easy to understand, you should 100% do more of these!
This video just cleared up so much for me. I knew about the ii-V-I progression in more of a theoretical and basic level, but this just made it click for me in terms of practicality. Cant wait to start utilizing this in my practicing.
You just earned my subscription sir! The way you broke this video down helps me understand a lot of the vocabulary I was aware of but not knowledgeable with
I'm so glad about seeing this video and this is helping me to learn about music and English (I'm Chilean 🇨🇱)
I already knew the content content but the way he explain things maked everything come alive, even if i know where he's going with the explanation. This is soooo easy to watch.
First TH-cam merch I'll ever buy
Please! Do more videos like this.
I fill like i learn something. And it was super natural and simple. Pleeeeease! I want to learn more!
How refreshing.. He promotes his merch, but also emphasizes responsibility and well being of customers over pure profits
14:54 Ladies and Gents, we’ve just learned how to play piano in a jazz bar
First time watching any of your videos. The fact there was nothing to learn for me in the video allowed me to focus more on how you're explaining things. And I think the quality of your explanation is astonishing!
Me: **sees ii-v-i**
Also me: **John Coltrane noises**
I don't know how to put this but you are the most humble, kind, talented yet so savage at criticizing-guy I have ever known and I like that.
Me, just thinking about Charles’ shirt: Hmm that looks nice, I would like one
Charles: New Merch!
Me: Surprised Pikachu Face 😮
Thank you so much for this. I’m a classically trained tuba player, and my college schedule didn’t allow for jazz theory electives (technique and educator courses took those spots). This certainly put things in the right perspective for many different levels. Awesome!
I find that jazz guys really love tritones, and my limited extended harmony understanding has me scratching my head as to why this works and it’s functionality.
Charles: "The world can never hurt from more jazz"
*laughs in freedom jazz dance*
Pleassseeee more videos like these!! There are so many music theory videos out there that are just showing dry theory but don't really explain how to apply and use it. This video is great for people who aren't exactly beginners and know the basic theory but can't actually do much with it yet ;) please keep making these! Im always typing in the search bar "how to spice up chords" and it gives me zero hits. But this is exactly the type of stuff we need!
I'm literally buying a white hoodie rn it's so sick omg
I discovered your channel recently and then stumbled on this video and, this has helped a lot! I'm currently trying to learn the piano after many years of wishing I would and your explaining of the 2-5-1 suddenly made so many things make more sense.
Drinking game: Do a shot everytime Charles resolves a chord progression.
You will be more sober than you wish.
This channel has by far become my favorite. Thank you so much for making these musical concepts so easy to understand and so practical.
Me: Hey that's a really nice shirt
Charles: That's mine
Me: *Pikachu Face*
the key change part is gold!! love it
Charles: Explains music theory some what understandably,
Me: wAiT hE hAs MeRcH nOw?
I honestly would love if he could explain the absolute basics. Because I just feel so calm when he talks about it. I can understand even if I don’t know everything.
i don't know if its me but I am hearing "Sunday Morning" out of 2-5-1 hahaha.
IKR, every time anyone plays a 2-5-1 in C that's all I hear lol.
(It does actually use those chords)
You're hearing half of all the music that was ever written.
As someone who was at one time (2 years) a music edu/performance major.......its great to see someone take the basics and make it fun.
wannabe soundcloud music producers: stonks
i'm talking about me i'm wannabe soundcloud music producers

Wannabe soundcloud music producers gang
Charles, please please please do a series on this - on your teachings, you have explained something I could never trully get! If you had lessons I'd totally do them, I wanna play the keyboard but don't know how to learn. You my friend might be a great internet teacher!!
Keep up the amazing work, love your videos even though I know so little about music and the keyboard/piano.
6:58 "When everybody says 2-5-1 [...] it's just that: 2-5-1!"
Best explanation so far!😂
Just kidding, you're doing this great!👍
I'm trying to learn the fretboard and I'm practicing the Circle of Fifths progression. I IV vii° iii vi ii V I. I'm spending a lot of time looking at the voice leading of each chord so I can really understand it. It's taking me a while, but my piano teacher is encouraging me to go at my own pace.
the piano is like mirrored so when he said he was playing a C major scale, it looked like he actually started on E but actually thats a C lmao
I love a minor 2-5-1 resolving to a major chord (basically modal interchange). E.g: Dm7b5 - G7 - Cmaj7
Charles: talking about the change in the first two chords and leading notes
Me: OMG PLEASE RESOLVE THE PROGRESSION I'M PULLING MY HAIR OUT
Satin Doll must drive you up the wall. 🤣
Honestly that merch is so clean and non intrusive its some of the first merch i've ever considered buying
When you use the 2 5 1 as a tool for key changes, are the 2 and the 5 in the starting key or the target key?
This is a good question. 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is the new key. Any new key. Charles demonstrates later in this video.
2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key.
6 2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key.
3 2 5 1 is a key change. ...
This reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently on: Why learn jazz standards. It motivated me to accelerate my efforts to learn harmony.
great question
Target key.
2010s: Yeah, but does it Djent?
2020s: Yeah, but does it Djazz?
Do you like djazz?
The roaring twenties gave us jazz, the roaring 2020s are giving us djazz
DUUUUUDDDEE I've been struggling to gain an intuitive understanding of the ii V I for YEARS and you made it SO EASY.The phrases "leading tone" and "common tone" swam to me from long-forgotten band memories and you BLEW MY MIND when you did whole "v in front of every new key" trick. I have a whole new understanding of the keyboard now. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you are AWESOME and I'm BUYING A SHIRT. I would love to see further videos, perhaps deconstructing how keys can change within a song? BLESS YOU HAVE A NICE DAY
Me at the beginning: “IS THAT MERCH I SEE 😳!!!!
at the end you running through those chords with the 5 in front sounded so good! You have an incredible amount of skill man. UGH I could listen to you play all day!!!!
Merch idea:
"It's technically CORRECT but... *stank face*"

CHARLES, every upload gives me life. Thank you for being such a positive force in these difficult times.
Day 2: Asking Charles to analyze the jingles from ‘history of the entire world, i guess’
*THE SUN IS A DEADLY LASER*
Keep at it
TBH it'd be cooler to see him analyze his actual songs...such as "La de da de da de da de day oh"
Sal Volcano not anymore there’s a blanket
Try this progression>Em7-A7-DMaj7 Dm7-G7-CMaj7 Cm7-F7-BbMaj7 -EbMaj7 (Back to the top)
j a z z. i already know this is gonna be a good video!
