    I hope this helps some people understand a bit more when we're talking about all those numbers! Please leave any additional questions below and I'll try my best to get back to as many as I can. Also, I'm so appreciative of you all even watching these videos, and that is more support than I could have ever imagined. However, if you happen to like a design and you want to rep the channel, you can check them out here!! teespring.com/stores/charlescornell

    PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE
    As a teen who's been playing classical for 10 years, I learned the theory but not how to apply it. I'm trying to make the switch to jazz (it just seems so much more fun), and, during quarantine, videos online have been my only source of guidance. Thank you so much!

    • @MudStuffin
      @MudStuffin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      If you've been playing for 10 years then I assume you have at least moderate reading and technical skills. So now what I encourage you to do to help you improve with jazz (mainly improv) is to transcribe pieces that you like (listen, learn how to play, then write them down) and transcribe the chords as well. Once you do that, you can find all the II-V-Is and take the licks from those parts and incorporate those into your own improv.... Wow, that was a lot... Good luck!

    The thing that made me crazy is at 11:00: "Once it resolves, that's a pleasing sound to our ears because it makes sense," and yes, yes it does, because THE UPPER NOTE OF THE G MAJOR CHORD IS THE LEADING TONE OF THE C MAJOR SCALE AND ITS RESOLUTION IS WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. All that talk about how critical the leading tone is in the 2-5 resolution, gets us all primed for this key insight, and now here are we are at the 5-1 resolution and it's just, "a motion that feels complete." Well sure it feels complete! The leading tone's resolving to the tonic! It's what makes this cadence sound so...authentic.
    Like, this is literally the one thing that I remember from studying voice leading (okay, that and contrary motion is better than similar motion, which I still think is a damn lie).

    I am a classical piano player 1 year before my finals for my piano diploma, in my country (Greece) together with our instrument of choise we have some mandatory classes we have to finish if we want to take a diploma on our instrument. Those are: Music history(2 years), Solfege(6 years), Choir(2 years), Chamber music(last 3 years before diploma), piano (5 years but only for those that don't play piano as their main instrument), and Music theory(3 years) leading to Music Harmony(next 3 years of music theory). We start learning chords and scales at the first 3 years of Music theory then we move to Chord progression, modulations, special chords, other styles of scales and harmonizing a melody at the next 3 years of Music Harmony...So basically this is Harmony lesson not Theory, for me at least. the 2-5-1 is one of the first things we learn at the first year of Music harmony(So basically 4 years into music theory). I just wanted to mention this because i don't know how Music theory works outside my country...Is it like 6 years Music theory or split into 3 years Music theory and 3 Music harmony?

    Dude, the “putting V in front of it to make it feel natural” thing BLEW MY MIND WHAT!?!?

    • @allorgansnobody
      @allorgansnobody 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      though I think it doesn't work if the V itself feels unnatural but that's okay because you can just play dominant chords cycling around the circle of fifths until you get where you wanna go lmao...
      yeah the mind has been blown o.o

    As a struggling self improver, piano. I am always awe struck by skill and knowledge, such as on this channel. There must have been a time when this titan was in a similar place as where I am right now. How did he get to where he is now? O.K. The obvious answer - Hours of practice, and study. Understood. Then the feeling that there has to be aptitude, and just as importantly a good teacher. I feel in my bones that a touch of skilful guidance is what I need. I worry that my energy and my time is lacking direction. But where are the good teachers? P.S. I went to the 'merch store' wondering if there was a book, or tutorials to buy.

    I still relatively new to music, and this is probably the best example of teaching chord voicing. It seems to be something that a lot of teachers take for granted, where they just go all over the piano, and I'm just like "whoa, there!". I have a hard time imagining chords as anything other than triads within one octave. I never know when to spread it out, and where to place voicings

Could you possibly put more graphics on screen of what chords you are playing to help keep things clear when you are explaining a concept? Nothing crazy, but like when you put the 5 and 1 up when you explained how you did the Imagine key changes. Keep up the amazing work. I can not wait for what comes next. When you use the 2 5 1 as a tool for key changes, are the 2 and the 5 in the starting key or the target key?

    • @melbournecrosbie
      @melbournecrosbie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good question. 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is the new key. Any new key. Charles demonstrates later in this video.
      2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key.
      6 2 5 1 is a key change. The 1 is in the new key.
      3 2 5 1 is a key change. ...
      This reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently on: Why learn jazz standards. It motivated me to accelerate my efforts to learn harmony.
