I joined the Army at 16. By the time I was 22, I’d served three tours of Northern Ireland and the former Yugoslavia. In that time, I found out that serving your country as a dog of war ain’t it’s all cracked up to be. I still bear the mental and physical scars today.
Go and be something else more constructive to humanity.

The reason they have to 'ask' is because those long range weapons systems aren't able to be operated by Ukrainian forces. Highly successful? 11,900 men with some 200 vehicles, their intention was to take the Kursk nuclear power plant and threaten Russia with a nuclear disaster far greater than Chernobyl, they were meant to have reached the the nuclear plant on the 11th, they've failed, they've also lost over 2,800 men, these were their best trained units. The US, UK, France, Poland are all involved in this as the radio signals picked up are predominantly in English, French and Polish. But this attack has failed, now the rest of the 9,000 or so men will be killed, no quarter will be offered them. As to Zelensky using UK long-rage missiles, if that happens then Russia is surely entitled to destroy the two massive military bases the UK has on Cyprus?

Another strategic view is that it is true that Ukraine won't win back every square meter (barring some unseen collapse of Russia) - that rarely happens in war anyhow. At this point since they failed in the Spring counteroffensive, is to simply beat Russia into a negotiated agreement. In that case the West keeping a relatively moderated approach has an advantage.

Richard Kemp says that the outsourced recruitment process saved money but did not get the recruits: in other words, its failure meant no money was actually "saved". Rather than subcontract to Capita (yes, them again), it would have been far better to have spent the money and actually got some recruits. Politicians should stop pretending that outsourcing works and admit it more often results in poor outcomes. Indeed, some organisations have been reported in Private Eye as cancelling contracts and bringing the services back in-house due to non-delivery of service.

My elder son spent 6 years in TA/7th Scots and six years in the Royal Navy (mine sweepers operating out of Faslane). He was able to save more money while in the forces, than he might have done in civvy street. Since leaving he's been able to transfer the small-unit disciplines and man-management skills to work outside the forces. Dealing with higher ranks within the forces, is also helpful when dealing with civvy managers. There's a lot the forces can sell themselves on. The all-found aspect of the forces suits some. The more the forces can give its recruits transferable skills and knowledge, the better.
As a matter of personal opinion, I'm in favour of giving Ukraine all the military and civilian support needed to 'defeat' Putin's Russia on the battle field. Always remembering that the important matter is the day after the war ends, when we begin the work of engaging those who the day before were enemies.
