That thundery roar of the lion
They have a scary and most intimidating roar.
I had a customer who used to live near Kings Island theme park. They had an animal preserve with lions. She and her husband would sit out on the patio at night and hear them roaring! In Ohio!!
I'd be too scared to even look out the window.
Nothing more scary than looking into the eyes of an angry, male Lion. Those yellow eyes are staring right through you

That’s not a roar. That’s a growl. When he roars you will hear it a mile or more away.

@@SuperChavon a roar is a specific sound. Lions roar to announce territory, mating, pain etc. Growls are all anger. This is a growl. Tiger growl is more of a hiss cough sound. Lion growl is deeper, sounds like v12 engine.
Fun fact a roar is essentially a meow in small cats. It's the same action. When they ask for stuff/ are in distress. If it was a lion it would come across as a roar. Tigers roar too, but it sounds like a meow with deep voice, an almost cow like sound. Lion's distinct sound is produced by a vibrating shifting piece of their larynx. This piece tires after a while and the lion's roar becomes short and numerous. I'm sure you've seen this. Leopards have a similar throat structure.

This is the true roar. Those zoo lion roar are yawning compare to this alpha.
Tigers have a similar yawning and not so "intimidating" roar/call (which sounds like an angry cat yowl when high pithced lol), the vicious roars you hear in films is again, a tiger's growl, snarl or hiss, not the actual roar.
lol all lions do the “yawn” thing, it's calling roaring. there's a difference between a roar and a growl. Lions can growl and can roar depending on the situation. growl is meant to be intimidating, roaring is meant for communication which btw travels long distances, vibrates around you and you can feel it in the pit of your stomach
This is a gutteral sound or a growl the roar is different.
What you see in this video is a warning growl and roar. That loud one you hear at the zoo is a territorial roar. They are two different things.
Tigers and almost all big cats basically let out a bass boosted meow when roaring. Lions on the other hand have the most distinctive roar of all big cats. It's scary, primitive and the loudest. Doesn't sound anywhere close to a meow. When it comes to growls tigers have the upper hand as they have a more viscious sounding growl. @@stephanos6128

Most of the folks on the internet continuously get misguided and then they misguide others too regarding the difference between a growl/call and an actual ROAR. Then they end up comparing a Tiger's Roar to a Lion's Growl/call and after this they say that Tiger is more fearsome. The reality is that a Tiger roars quite often than a Lion cuz it roars instinctively cuz it's an independent as well as an "alone" animal, however the Lion on the other hand is a family/pride animal and they growl/call more often then roaring in order to communicate to fellow lions and alert them (and even potential enemies) about their presence. Lions don't roar often at all, it's only when they're really angry when they feel threatened or they feel like that someone is trying to disturb/attack their lioness(es) and cubs. A Lion by nature is a bit calm compared to a tiger but there's a reason you call it the king of the jungle. So keeping it short: that's the actual Lion Roar in there, especially at 1:38 which, as it seems, is more fearsome and intimidating than a Tiger's roar.
