tysonpaul, Any acrylic based filler such as Polyfilla or similar (at any hardware store) will work just as well to fill up the cracked area. Just sandpaper or scrape it smooth and over-paint it with some white acrylic paint to seal it completely before using oil paints to complete the painting.
Thank you!!! You saved me from a lot of tears as one of my favorite pieces of art had an unfortunate accident today. I'm so happy I can fix it. Thank you thank you!
THis was super helpful for me. I'm a college student and I have a painting class and I bought a few pre-stretched canvases before moving back in to college. My father squeezed one of my canvases into the car and it got punctured. I was worried I couldn't use it today for my project I have to start in class. You saved me from running to the store before class. thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for this very helpful tutorial. I purchased a couple of 18x24 canvases yesterday from my local supply store. I got them at a great discount due to there being punctures in them. I have made the repairs per your guidance and they look almost as good as new. Once I paint...no one would ever be able to guess! ☺👍
Yes, but it will not be strong enough to stop the tear going further - it is just a hole filler. A suggestion is to use some cold acrylic glue and fill the tear so as to glue the edges to the wood frame, and when completely dry, add the filler. Hope this helps.
Great! I am doing a painting and had the draft done on the canvas when I find a small tear. This DIY was Definitely a Lifesaver for my canvas! Worked like a charm. Many Thanks :-)
I have a large tear in a large original painting. I will have to donate the piece now but was wondering if I could use clear gesso on the front and the PVA glue on back and then do any slight touch ups with paint? What do you think - open to suggestions from all.
@@mcrawford5877 then you can't use the gesso on the front as it is water based. What I suggest is just patching the back, bringing the torn canvas as best you can together in alignment, then touch up with oil on the front when dry. Good luck.
Can this method be used to affix a trimmed giclee canvas to the top of a stretched canvas? I have a giclee that was improperly cut (no edge border to stretch) that needs to be fastened as if to a stretcher bar. Can I use this method to paste the giclee to the top surface of a blank artist's canvas? The criteria is that is should be flat, no wrinkles, not reversible by heat or humidity, and appear as if it's just one stretched canvas.
This was really helpfull, I had to finish a painting my dad and grandma started years ago, and accidentally my Rabbit stepped in the canvas and it open two holes in the painting, its going to be dificult because it is already painted and I have to paint again with the same exact color
I would carefully cut the loose strings off otherwise they will show as ridges in the final painting. If the tear is in the oil painted area then, depending on the width of the gap, also fill the gap with gesso only in the actual gap and not on the painted area. This will seal the raw canvas from the oil.Carefully smooth the gesso when dry.
I need to repair an oil painting which has been varnished and has ripped,, I have experimented on another canvas with gesso which doesn't stick very well can I use gorilla glue as its really strong to stick patch to the back then go over the front in thick oil then re varnish??
I wouldn't recommend it for two reasons: 1) You would need to see if the gorilla glue is ph neutral otherwise it may gradually destroy the canvas. 2) You don't know what chemicals are inside the glue. These chemicals may leach into the paint and affect the colour and longevity of the paint.
@@philipadams3445 unfortunately not - the paint doesn't grip to the varnish. If it is not a valuable painting, then you can gently sand the varnish to roughen it up, paint over it, then varnish. I don't recommend it though because the paint may peel off or crack down the line.
Could you please tell me, if the hole is on the edge of the canvas (front) and is torn down to the wood (slightly) would I be able to use the same filler?
Hi, what is type of glue are you using to bond the patch to the canvas? Is it regular glue? I am searching for " Cold glue? with no luck. Greetings from Los Angeles, Ca.
When selling the finished painting, would you want to advise the buyer that a repair had been completed? As a buyer of a few pieces of art, I would want to know. Thankyou
I live in Hong Kong. I have a rather fine old copy of a Rubens. Unfortunately, one of the damn cats got into the room where it is stored and now there is a 3-inch tear. I see that your method would be excellent for unpainted canvas, but mine would need colour matching of the original painting with the repaired section. There is nobody that I can find that does this sort of restoration in Hong Kong, and the painting is huge, so very hard to send to London. I really am at a complete loss...
It is very unlikely that you will want to work on it yourself, so taking it to a conservator is best. You might inquire at the Conservation Office of Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department for a list of local private conservators. What a conservator will do is take the painting off the chassis so that the edges of the tear can be pulled back together before a patch is applied from the rear. This minimizes the amount of infill painting. The repaired canvas will then be re-stretched onto the chassis.
I don't have any textured acrylic, but I do have spackle! Hopefully I can make a mixture of the two to give the spackle a little flexibility and it'll work. Hopefully lol...
+PaintBasket JUST JOKING. YES... IT'S NICE. I'VE JUST REPAIRED MY CANVAS. I CUT A PIECE OF CANVAS TO SIZE, AND CUT THE CORNERS LIKE YOU SAID. THE PVA IS DRYING SO.. I'LL SEE IN THE MORNING HOW IT LOOKS. THANK YOU.
Anyone know what 'cold glue' is? Is that like ordinary Elmer's glue, the white stuff, or is this some esoteric artist's glue that EVERYONE on earth (except you) knows all about? Another how-to about canvas repair demands 'non-acidic glue.' Implied is that acidic glue will stain the canvas and ruin it for all time. Oh. What 'non-acidic glue' is not mentioned. Again, EVERYONE on Earth knows what that is. "Your eyes are limpid pools. Love me! But only if know what non-acidic glue is! Right.
PVA is polyvinyl acetate, and there are many brands available. Importantly, it should be permanently soluble in water after it is dry and cured. Elmer's School Glue is one such. I've used it for many years. Using a permanently water-soluble glue makes the repair easily reversible, which is one of the criteria for sound conservation work.
