  • This video shows you in detail how to prepare and change gearbox oil for a manual 6-speed transmission 986 Porsche Boxster S. There are some specific notes for 5-speed gearboxes too. The instructions are applicable to almost all manual Porsche gearboxes (even back to the air-cooled days).

    Nope, you're wrong about this being the standard transaxle lube used by Porsche. Porsche sells a product that is designed for use in both a transmission and a differential e.g. transaxle. I tried to get around this high dollar Porsche lube by using Redline 75w90ns which gave me very good shifting but not great. Next, I used Motul 75w90 and it was worse. This Mobil product and the others will provide protection but not good smooth shifting when cold.

      Motul has worked perfect for me. Buttery smooth.

    2.7 litres is the fill amount; Delvac is fine for the track. Use Porsche gear oil for the street unless you want notchy cold shifting

      Thanks matti7771 for this valuable supplement to the video.

      Actually 2.8 for 6 speed gearbox. 5 speed is 2.25 according to Bentley published book for porsche boxster 986.

      You are correct. If you live in a cold environment and only drive on the streets, the lighter oil as stated above is likely a good choice.

    What is the make/model of your lift? If you were going to buy another would you buy it or another make/model?

    It's scary that you intermixed between ft-lb and lb. For example, for the diagonal braces, you mentioned 48 ft-lb of torque in one second and 48 lb in the next second. Obviously if the wrong torque is applied, you would either strip the nut or have a leak afterward. Similarly, you mentioned the torque for the drain plug is 22 lb, I am sitting here wondering if you meant 22 ft lb or just 22 lb of torque.

    Great video!!! I just changed the Gearbox oil on my 986 Boxter S 2003 6 speed without any problem. Is the Differential part of the gearbox or should be separate oil change?

    You did not say what GL classification that manual trans fluid is-only that its "what Porsche uses". Is it GL-5 or GL-4? Big difference .

    It has been suggested in another TH-cam video that the bolts being removed to complete the transmission service are the same bolts that are used to align the rear end. Do you feel it is necessary to get the car's rear end aligned after completing the transmission service?

    • @stevenbukoski4474
      @stevenbukoski4474 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry fir really delayed response, the fasteners removed for the diagonals and larger metal plate ARE NOT suspension points, thus have no impact on alignment.

    No clue what bolt to remove to fill, missing info. I came here to see what bolts to remove. Too bad, I'll go find another video.

    Very nice video 👍
    If only on race-ramps the rear wheels is it ok to change the transaxle oil in six speed manual transmission Cayman?
    And after the change is there any problems with aluminium pan and brackets that were taken off and reinstalled??
    Thank you
    Chris

      Shud b ok on race Ramos to remove everything. All the metal components removed are for chassis stiffness (not suspension) and will not be under stress if on race ramps. If you only have the rear on race ramps the gearbox won’t be level, so you will need to lift the front as well. Please use support systems/tools designed to support the elevated car.

    Does this also apply to Tiptronic? Does the diff in tiptronic car have fluid to change in it, or no its just the ATF fluid?

    • @stevenbukoski4474
      @stevenbukoski4474 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just have to change the ATF fluid. The process is different though, due to the drain/fill arrangement. Will see if we can arrange a video on this.

      Thanks for the question. Been a long time since produced any videos. Video partner moved on to other sports, and I am heavily involved in WRL racing. Happy to answer questions when I have the time. It simply takes so much time and effort to shoot, light, narrate, and do post-production editing.
