  • A vintage beauty routine for 1940s women. Home spun advice on how to dress, style hair and do makeup. Colorized upscaled film with restored soundtrack at 4K 60fps. Made in 1948
In the 1940s, the beauty routine of young women was characterized by simplicity and a focus on natural elegance, influenced by the austere conditions of World War II. The leading authority on all things feminine in the 1940s was a certain Ponds beauty consultant called Mary Stuyvesant.
You can check out her video on our channel.
How to be Pretty - 1940's Guide for High School Girls
Skincare was fundamental, often limited to basic cleansing and moisturizing due to rationing of cosmetics. Women typically used cold cream for both cleansing and moisturizing, and a light dusting of powder to mattify the skin. Makeup was minimal but impactful, with a focus on creating a fresh, healthy look.
Eyebrows were groomed and often penciled to achieve a natural arch, while eyes were subtly enhanced with a modest application of mascara - eyeliner was less common.
Lips were the focal point, with red lipstick becoming iconic of this era, symbolizing both glamour and resilience.
Hairstyles were practical yet stylish, with victory rolls and soft waves being popular, often secured with hairnets or scarves to suit the demands of wartime work. Overall, the beauty routine of the 1940s young women was about maintaining a polished appearance with limited resources, embodying a blend of grace and strength.
After a cleansing, relaxing bath, that's a good daily habit, Sue has a regular routine. And plan time too for the finishing touches. Doing your nails, brushing your hair, and so on. A clear polish keeps her nails sparkling.
Once a week, Sue gives herself a complete manicure. Then daily care of her nails is easy. In the same way, regular shampoos and daily brushing keep her hair clean and glossy. And these finishing touches that add so much to Sue's cleanliness and neatness all fit into a simple schedule of daily activities.
And now for at least eight hours of sleep. Good health is the rule, for health is one of the foundations of your appearance. What will she wear? That depends on her activities of course. For school, choose comfortable, not too dressy clothes.
Perhaps a skirt and a blouse to go with it. But what about these two blouses? Which is more appropriate for school? Which goes with the skirt? Yes, choose clothes that are suitable, suitable to your needs and situation.
But remember that any clothes look better with good posture. Now that her clothes are selected, Sue is ready to fix her hair. What to do with those curls she so carefully put in last night? you It doesn't matter just what hairstyle you use, as long as it looks right on you.
Upswept? Loosely over the shoulders. Just be sure your hairdo suits you and that your hair is neatly in place. Eat a hearty, balanced breakfast. There's nothing like wholesome food to help keep you in good health.
And that means a clear complexion, shining eyes, glossy hair. In short, that means a better appearance. After breakfast, Sue goes back to her room for some finishing touches. Her makeup. Her powder is one that blends with her natural coloring.
She pats it on lightly, then carefully smooths it over her face. And be careful when it comes to lipstick. Yes, choose a shade that goes with your own coloring and sets off your clothes to advantage.
Then, easy does it. Now smooth out gently and wipe off any excess to leave only a smooth film of color. And finally, a last minute once over in the mirror. Make sure your hemline is even. Don't let your slip show.
Your mirror tells you what others see. How do you look? How does Sue look? These grooming habits form the basis of a good appearance and a well -planned outfit of clothes. Well cared for hands and nails.
Light touches of makeup. A becoming hairdo.

    The AI Film Restoration Process:
I take early fragments of BW footage and restore them to life by a combination of manual frame by frame colorization as well as the use of deep exemplar-based video colorization techniques. The footage is upscaled and the frames interpolated to a higher frame rate ( in most cases 60 frames per second.) Finally I produce a soundtrack which helps build a new immersive experience for the viewer.
Together, these processes revive old fragments of footage, offering audiences a more
vivid and engaging glimpse of lives long since lived in the distant past.

I love these vintage videos. I'll look at them too, for inspiration. People today may laugh, which I've seen in some of the comments. But this is no laughing matter. Her life was put together nicely, and people get it confused with perfection. Nobody's saying their lives were perfect, not even the people who produced the film in the 40s! What the film is telling us is that this is a great way to teach young girls (and some women) how to have a decent routine that gives you confidence, put your life together orderly and nicely without trendy nonsense.

I dont know where these were shown originally, but I think it is a great tool for teaching young girls how to look presentable. Girls today look like slobs. Sweat clothes, or pajamas. Depends on where you live I suppose. 🤔 My 9th grade Home Ec. Class invited a lady from Merel Norman Studio to come and teach how to apply makeup. We had 2 studios at the time. I just remember how things were done then. I took a modeling course which also taught etiquette. I even tried out for the towns pageant.
