PR and citizenship aren't the same thing :) PR means I can stay in Japan as a non-Japanese resident. Japanese Citizenship would mean I'd have to give up my Canadian passport, which I don't want to do.
+DANIELLE DENT Ma'am Thank you for your comment. I would ask you to look into the US side of your comment. My understanding is that if one's father is a US citizen and the mother is a Japanese national. And if the child was born in Japan the child will be added to the mother's koseki tohon (Japanese family registry). The American father can go to the US Consulate (Osaka) and get their child a US Consulate Report of Birth Abroad:OF A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which gives the child American citizenship . Then the child will have both US/Japanese citizenship. The child can have a US & Japanese passport. Now when the child turns 20 yrs old the Japanese gov't will ask the child to sign a form (I am sorry that I can not recall it's name) saying that they want to be a Japanese citizen. That does not do anything to effect the US part. So long as you do not go to the US Consulate and renounce your citizenship you still will have dual citizenship. PSfor more info please contact:US Citizenship & IMMIG Service2200 Potomac Cntr. Dr. STOP 2425Arlington, VA USA 205981-800-375-5283
I am in the EXACT scenario as you described. My son has dual citizenships and is legal. Caution when travelling out of Japan and expecting to return back to Japan. Do not use both passports when existing and returning. Jp immigration will give you a hard time since they document everything. Ex. Your kid left Jp on a us passport and return using a JP passport. In there system, your kid never left jp since there was no stamp leaving jp on his JP passport. Play it safe, use only one passport when travelling. Have your kid use the Jp passport instead. Also, don't tell the US immigration your kid has 2 passports. They will make a fuss about it. blah, blah, blah.
+yopparaiiii Thank you for sharing. Do you know the name of the form that a Japanese dual citizen has to sign when they turn 20 yrs old is called that is if they want to keep their Japanese citizenship?
What a relief!!!! Congratulations! So glad to hear a success story and that you're able to focus on you and flex your muscles more. Good luck on all your new plans and possibilities 😃
Congrats on getting 3 years! :) While Fukuoka/Kyushu may be somewhat niche I think there are many people(myself included) who appreciate your videos. I'll be moving to work in Kyushu later this year so looking forward to that haha.
awh so happy to see that you won't have to worry about it for a while! Your videos about Fukuoka are one of the things that make you different, and they have always been very helpful and fun to watch. Keep being you and making videos about the places you like, it make you stand out and I love your content!

Yay congrats on the Visa! Your videos may not be as niche as you think, I do believe many follow you strictly based on your personality, talent for good images and scripts, an honesty and desire to do well that translates into beautiful videos. I ll never go to Fukuoka but I love seeing wherever you go because you make it interesting! Here's hoping to many more years of it.
Congrats on the visa and best of luck with the PR application! Please do keep posting videos about Fukuoka and other cities in Japan. Your videos and the information you give really helped me a lot when I visited Fukuoka a couple of months ago. I had a great time in the city. It's really beautiful. People are so nice. Loved Ohori Park! Food is great. And Hakata dolls are amazing!
Congratulations on your visa renewal! So well deserved! You've done so much to promote Japan and Fukuoka with your channel. Wishing you all the best on your permanent residency application and your future endeavors. By the way, Kit is a super handsome cat!
Congrats on the 3 year renewal! And lucky for us, 3 more years of your wonderful vlogs. Good luck and looking forward to see what lies ahead for you in the next 3 years and beyond. Take care
I wanted to share that I have loved that you chose Fukuoka as your home and really showed us what life was like in Japan for a foriegner outside of Tokyo. I wouldn't be upset if you brought us somewhere new, I loved your other South East Asia travel videos as well!
Keep on making your content the way you think it’ll be useful and appreciated by people who might need it, cuz for sure there always be someone who needs it. And congratulations Micaela, for getting your Visa for the last 3 years, for the consistency and being patient for all the paperwork it takes to stay in a country for such a long time. Most people would get really sick of it and struggle a lot to not give up, so here’s your reward afuera all these years you’ve been working for it. 😊👌🏻
Congratulations Micaela! I can tell how stressful this stuff is each time you go through it so it's great that it's out the way again for even a little while. And you're spot on with what you said about your Fukuoka content. I've said it in a few comments on posts before but your content is 100% what made me visit Fukuoka in March so I'm proof that it's worth it! Looking forward to AT LEAST 3 years more content!
Wonderful news, I've been to Fukuoka twice now and currently planning my 3rd and 4th trips! (Christmas and sometime in May respectively) . I love it there, i've been to Tokyo, it was good but Fukuoka is more my speed. My thanks to you Micaela as without you, i probably would have just done the usual places. Your content allows me to see new parts of Fukuoka to visit and it makes planning easier.
Hi Micaela! I absolutely love your videos. I understand Fukuoka is probably not in people's mind when they travel to Japan. However we just recently visited Kyushu 2 weeks ago and I got some pointers from your video. Let's just we absolutely love Fukuoka, it's probably our new favourite Asian city. Thank you for making these videos and I hope others find it as useful.
Micaela congratulations on your visa! Keep up the fantastic videos that you put your whole heart into; whether it be Fukuoka or other parts of Japan when you travel
Congratulations on the visa renewal Micaela!!! Watching the veil of stress on your shoulders being lifted was a joy to see and i can't wait to see all your future plans come to life you deserve it all!! ❤️❤️ And i love the new kitty scarf...Is that the Lon Special Edition?? ❤️❤️
Congrats Micaela. When uncertainity like that is removed, it's a lot of weight off your shoulders. You'll sleep better, and everything becomes worthwhile again.
Fukuoka vids are the bees knees! I wouldn't have known I wanted to see or know anything about Fukuoka until seeing videos you've made about it, so I'm glad you're pushing the typical jvloggers/Japan content creator video. Though it's probably harder to attract general viewers looking for "life in Japan" with Fukuoka instead of somewhere like Tokyo, I think it does offer something new and valuable, especially for people who are at the place where they've seen Tokyo videos, a few countryside videos, but don't know what else there is to look for in Japan. Beyond Fukuoka, you do a great job of making places all around Japan as interesting (if not more interesting, frankly) as/than the general "shopping in Tokyo" video.
Having watched your videos for well over 9 years now has been a fun trip and seeing that your visa type has been upgraded and your options are wider is encouraging. I think the first video I ever saw (which I don't think is still up) was one of your "on the street talks" way back in your first neighborhood near music school. You do appear to have a more positive outlook, and it has a great deal to do with greater opportunities. (Like you would ever leave Kit !)
Thanks for the visa lawyer info. I'm on the cusp of the 5 year research residency visa, and if I can fulfill the last check box, I would probably want a professional to make sure it was all in order.
Fuk yeah, Micaela!! I'm so glad that you'll be able to stay in Japan! Love the Kyushu videos! They got me to love Southern Japan, and it's a nice change of pace from the typical Tokyo vlogs that everyone else does!
So glad to hear!! Glad you don’t have to stress about it for a minute💕 and I think it’s great what you said at the end regarding your content. I think you can really love your work best that way. Good luck!
This is literally me for everything! I feel this helps me function better. It's better to worry and get things done fast then to be too relax and slack in it. Worrying is good!
Congrats for three more years! I've been watching your videos for years now. Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I've always liked your Fukuoka videos over other Japan vloggers.
Yess congrats on your new Visa and whatever you choose to do lots of positivity coming your way! I hope you get your PR it must be a lot to have those thoughts but we are all here to support you and bring you up when your down! Best of luck for the coming future and I can't wait to see your new content as you start working towards your new goals!! ❤️😊
This was ultra helpful because PR is something I've been wanting since I moved here. Thoughts on how to do so plague my mind. I was told living here ten years and then applying, but if by working I could get it in five that would be amazing. I'm hoping to be able to apply for a three year visa next time... Fingers crossed.
So happy you're able to make some definitive decisions about your future, i'm a long term sub and always enjoy the content you put out and it makes me happy that things are working out personally and professionally for you.
Congratulations!! Someday I hope to visit Fukuoka, so I am thankful for the Fukuoka content!! Hope you can relax a bit now that the visa process is over for a couple years 😊
I actually found your Fukuoka very helpful, I went to Japan 6 months ago and popped down to Fukuoka and I remember your video on how close the airport was, the park and the main train station having everything so I booked my hotel with all that in mind so thank you!
Maybe it's because I was an English teacher, but I actually got my 3-year visa at my first renewal and at one point I had a five-year visa. I'm surprised you've been renewing every year for this long! But congrats on finally getting the 3-year and a shot at permanent residency! :)
Congrats! I really think it depends on so many factors with getting visas here. Personally my 1st via was a 3 year, 2nd was 3 year then applied for PR and been a permanent resident for 8 years now! Japan is my home, an awesome country...still love Canada but will never live there again
you are so nice to watch, it is nice to see another part of Japan instead of just Tokyo; it is what sets you apart from the crowd of other Japanese youtubers. Love watching all your videos, they inspire me to keep going with my Japanese (sat with my N3 books on my knees right now - ready to get started for the day!) and remind me what I am studying for. I really want to come and visit the Japanese countryside next. My husband and I have been to Kyoto and Hiroshima which we loved, so I am interested in seeing a different side to Japan next :-) Also, congratulations for your visa, it must be such a relief. Your cat is amazing.
This video has given me a lot of useful information regarding visas and long term stay in Japan, thank you so much! Edit: Congratulations on getting the three-year visa!
Congrats on your visa! Your vlogs are really helpful. I will be visiting Fukuoka in Sep and was looking for new info. I have never been there and with your info I can relax and have a good time. Thanks much!
Yay! For some reason this makes me think of Micaela of years gone by doing videos on not wanting to be in Japan forever. But the Micaela of today seems so much happier and full of excitement for the future. So I hope your happiness keeps on growing 😊
Hmmm, I don’t think I’ve said for sure whether or not I want to stay here forever. I’ve said I’m not interested in naturalizing (giving up my Canadian passport for a Japanese one) but if I have PR I can go back and forth :)
Fukuoka looks absolutely gorgeous and I love your Fukuoka videos!! Honestly my boyfriend and I are thinking of living abroad in Japan (in a couple of years time) but he hates cold places and I feel like Fukuoka is somewhere we'd definitely consider staying!! It's so pretty!
KasumiKriss 😱 KasumiKriss aahhh...you follow micaela too!? That's pretty cool, especially since I follow both of you. 😅. Just funny to run into you in the comments. (Makes me feel like you're just a regular person like us and not just a TH-camr hahah 😁). If you know what I mean. Anyways ✌😀
Hello! Yeaaah, for as long as I can remember. Around the time she started out on TH-cam! LOL I am just a regular girl, who also makes videos thee-hee I know what you mean ^_^
Your cat is adorable! Congrats on getting the coveted three year visa, and for being so close to your goal of permanent residency! Do you feel you got a 3 year visa because of Ono-san, or your job? What did you do to make your application stand out?
She actually does the application part for me (including going to immigration on my behalf-that alone makes it worth the money imo.) In my case she set me up with a great accountant who really understood what I did, and now that accountant manages both Tatsu and my taxes. I actually had to get all my taxes redone because my last accountant did them wrong, and Ono-san got her friend to step in and re-do mine in a hurry before my last renewal last year. Because my visa is basically self sponsored it completely depends on all the work I can show at the end of the year, how much money I’ve made, and how much I’m paying back to the city in resident taxes... so she gives me tips on how to make sure none of that paperwork goes wrong... Stuff I would have been really lost about if I was trying to manage on my own. There’s not much online, but she’s handled similar applications before so she knows what I need to work on...
Thanks for taking the time to write back! Lots of food for thought. I was an ALT with Interac, and I was always so pissed off at their 1-year visa sponsorships. Had no idea about the 3-year visa requirement you mentioned. I would’ve never gotten permanent residency if I’d continued working for them. Interac helped out with the confusion around visas and taxes though, so that was a plus for a newbie like me. I left last year to do an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL back home, in order to get a better paid direct hire position at a school or uni for my eventual and permanent return to Japan. If I’m successful, I won’t have a middle man helping me out with visas and taxes anymore. So, a visa lawyer and accountant may be just what I need to get my bearings.
OMG your cat is so chill! Love your videos. You sound like your at a turning point congrats. Translation, video tourism, non profit ideas? Helping people would be great.
Thank you for your very interesting insights Micaela! 😄 Your videos have encouraged me to come study in Japan for university. Since I will be moving there in August, I am also going through visa matters... it takes a bit of time yet it’s very rewarding to receive a positive response. Also, I love your Fukuoka videos! The city looks beautiful and I love how the maritime landscape blends with the buildings. Lots of love from Switzerland to you, Kit, Lon and Tatsu! 💙😊
Congratulations on getting your visa! I'm really interested in Fukuoka. Never lived in a city like it before and find it worth checking out. Your video is really informative. Did not know working holiday doesn't count towards permanent residency. Your cat is cool, lol. Thanks for sharing!
As a British Expat living in the US, I can really empathize about this. I had a 3 year visa that was renewed once. But the US CIS system is so slow that those both ran out and I was put onto 1 year visas. By now I had bought a house and got married so that was a bit of a shock. I had to renew the year visa once before my PR (Green Card here) came through. Life goes on hold and you can be fearful to plan anything for the future. So go for it, get that PR and good luck to you, from one expat to another.
Congratulations Micaela!! It's super exciting to have the go from the government to be able to continue your future there!! I'll continue watching your videos and YT travelling as that's all I can do for now.
I’m glad you were able to renew your visa! I’m going through the visa process for the first time now with France and I’m currently in the irrational fear phase. I’ll find out in a week or so, but for now I’m freaking out just a little.
ahhh congratulations on the 3-year visa! i can only imagine how stressful it can be to be on one-year visas and have to worry about reapplying every year, so it's great that now you can plan a little more long term. i was fortunate enough to visit fukuoka (and a bit of kyushu) last year and it was so so lovely, i would absolutely love to try living there for maybe a year or two (but i'd probably have to learn some japanese first LOL). best of luck with everything going forward! (:
Congrats on the Long Term status. :-) Technical nitpick: a visa is the document you get from a Japanese consulate or embassy that gets pasted into your passport and allows you to come to the country. After that when you actually come you get a residence card and a status of residence. What most people mean in Japan, including in this video, when they talk about renewing /changing visas is renewing / changing status of residence.
I’ve been watching you for a while now happy for you :)!! I am from Okinawa, Japan but lived in mainland Japan most of my life because I’m part of the military family- it’s been couple years since I lived in Japan and I miss everything about it! The seven eleven, curry, karaoke, it goes on 😭😝
Congratulations 😊 loved this video and definitely relate as I'm a Canadian living in Australia and the visa process is also very stressful and lengthy (2 years after applying and still being considered..) good luck with your PR! ❤️
I really appreciate the Fukuoka; at first the (bilingual series) videos, then your other videos about Fukuoka, they helped me decide to go to Fukuoka for Japanese language school over Tokyo. Tokyo is awesome but it didn't have that special intangible feeling Fukuoka has. I'm happy for you that you got your visa, you are so lucky. I look forward to more videos about my favorite place thanks Micela.
Big congratulations on the 3 year visa. That's incredible. 😊 I'm also going to apply for PR next year. Very nervous. My last visa was a five year and will expire around the same time as yours. Best wishes on everything!
I'm glad you got your 3 year renewal so you can you can work on PR! I know what it can feel like to be stuck for sure and the relief when you can even see a flicker of a future
woah I just discovered your channel and I love it. Looking forward to more videos :) And congratulations! Immigration is so difficult everywhereeee now a days.
I jumped into your channel from Chika’s. It’s really interesting that I was born and raised in Fukuoka and am living in Toronto now, my PR is underway that always made me nervous and frustrated😭 I appreciate you like there and hope you’re having a great time !!
Great video! I had no idea working holiday didn't count. I also didn't know you needed need longer than 1 year visa to apply for PR... Good to keep in mind if I want to do that one day.
If you get permanent residency would you lose citizenship in Canada? I know I’m the US and Japan you can’t have dual you have to give one up
PR and citizenship aren't the same thing :)
PR means I can stay in Japan as a non-Japanese resident.
Japanese Citizenship would mean I'd have to give up my Canadian passport, which I don't want to do.
Me too. I love my US passport.

Hey Mikaela, your Fukuoka videos are really helpful, visiting your city in a few days! So you've definitely helped some souls on the internet

選択権が自分だけにない事は理解してもらってるようで何より。日本は移住のハードルが高いからね。でも日本国民だと認識されたらほぼ日本人として扱われる。それもいやなのかな?どっちにしろ幸せな人生を楽しんでください。

Awww kitty's so cute!! Congratulations on your residency progress!! Can't wait for my turn.

Thank you, Micaela! I'm in my second year living in Japan, and this was helpful for long term planning.

So happy you're able to make some definitive decisions about your future, i'm a long term sub and always enjoy the content you put out and it makes me happy that things are working out personally and professionally for you.
Keep making videos and when you finish with Fukuoka then more on to next prefecture. There is so much more to Japan than Tokyo!
Congratulations!!
Someday I hope to visit Fukuoka, so I am thankful for the Fukuoka content!!
Hope you can relax a bit now that the visa process is over for a couple years 😊

I really want to come and visit the Japanese countryside next. My husband and I have been to Kyoto and Hiroshima which we loved, so I am interested in seeing a different side to Japan next :-)
Also, congratulations for your visa, it must be such a relief.
Congratulations! I've been following you channel for at least 6-7 years... Time flies! xx
It is so enjoyable listening to you, no matter what you talk about.
Teeheeeeeeee I love you ❤️❤️❤️
Glad I've been following you for so long. You are living my dream that I turned away 16 years ago. Keep up the great work.
Congratulations! I really enjoy all of the videos you make 😊
Congratulations!! Really happy for you and thank you for the information about visas in Japan 😊
Your cat is adorable! Congrats on getting the coveted three year visa, and for being so close to your goal of permanent residency! Do you feel you got a 3 year visa because of Ono-san, or your job? What did you do to make your application stand out?
She actually does the application part for me (including going to immigration on my behalf-that alone makes it worth the money imo.)
In my case she set me up with a great accountant who really understood what I did, and now that accountant manages both Tatsu and my taxes.
Congratulations on your visa renewal! ^-^ Looking forward to new videos! And ahh, Lon is so cute!
おめでとうございます🎊㊗️🎉🎈自分の事のように嬉しいです。ぜひ日本での生活を満喫して欲しいですね。これからもTH-cam楽しみにしてます。
OMG your cat is so chill! Love your videos. You sound like your at a turning point congrats. Translation, video tourism, non profit ideas? Helping people would be great.
Thank you so much for this video and all your other videos! I really enjoy your Fukuoka videos! I am trying to get a job there next year!!
I’m so happy for you!! ❤️ I hope everything goes well for your PR application, and I wish you luck for all your future projects 😊
Congratulations on getting your visa! I'm really interested in Fukuoka. Never lived in a city like it before and find it worth checking out. Your video is really informative. Did not know working holiday doesn't count towards permanent residency. Your cat is cool, lol. Thanks for sharing!
What is "working holiday"? My plan is to start my 10 consecutive years in Japan, so I would be happy if I don't make any mistakes.
I am so happy for you Micaela, I hope you can stay as long as you like. What beautiful colored eyes your kitty has!
Congratulations!! I can only imagine how exciting that must be!
おめでとう!! That’s great! Now you don’t have to worry about it for awhile! Also, Lon was so cute at the end, just lounging on you. 😂
Ahhh I’m so happy that your lawyer helps people in Saga. Visa renewal stresses me out so badly hopefully I can consult her next time.
Congratulations Michaela!!! I'm so happy for u!!
Your cat is so cute. 😆 Found this video pretty informative 👍
Congratulations Micaela!! It's super exciting to have the go from the government to be able to continue your future there!! I'll continue watching your videos and YT travelling as that's all I can do for now.
I’m so happy and excited for you✨
Congrats 🎉
You're an inspiration. I've been watching your videos since 2013
I've been following you since like 2009. You have grown so much in those 11+ years in Japan.
Congratulations on this milestone! By the way your cat is absolutely adorable, made me smile 🤗🙈
Big congratulations on the 3 year visa. That's incredible. 😊
I'm also going to apply for PR next year. Very nervous. My last visa was a five year and will expire around the same time as yours.
Best wishes on everything!
Love it!!!! I’m so happy for you hun!
It’s really interesting that I was born and raised in Fukuoka and am living in Toronto now, my PR is underway that always made me nervous and frustrated😭
I appreciate you like there and hope you’re having a great time !!
Great video! I had no idea working holiday didn't count. I also didn't know you needed need longer than 1 year visa to apply for PR... Good to keep in mind if I want to do that one day.
Congratulations!!
Ahh I’m so excited for you, congrats!!!
And I love your Fukuoka vids 💖
Congratulations🌹 I’m looking forward to watching more uplifting content❤️
Congratulations, just found your channel. Really enjoy your content. 😀
I became a permanent resident in Canada this summer. I definitely remember that fear. I might go for citizenship next year. I'm really glad for you!
