  • One of my long time supporters, subscriber and now Patron - Ms Diane, made a special request of me last month - to do a first time reaction to James Blunt "Monsters" in honour of her late father who's birthday it would have been... 🥺❤️ Always an honour to react to your requests but this was a special one...
    Now she did warn me it was a bit of a tear jerker but I don't think I was quite ready for just how much, especially given the context and the fact it was my first time watching any James Blunt... well I thought best to put a trigger warning because wow... this got me right in the gut!
    Big love to all the dad's out there and again, happy heavenly birthday to yours Di! 🥹💖

    I appreciate you noticing and pointing out how James, despite saying we're just two grown men, still calls him Daddy. And that goes both ways, at the end of the video, Dad pats James on the arm, just like a Daddy does, to say, "Well done, son."

      He refers to them as two grown men instead of father and son to make the pain more bearable at the possible loss of loosing his dad. If he just refers to him as a grown man, he might just be able to cope
      So glad he was ok in the end!!

    • @Maerahn
      @Maerahn ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even more heart-wrenching is that the phrase "We're just two grown men saying goodbye" is what James and his dad used to say to each other just before either one of them got deployed to fight somewhere (both were in the army, where you're trained early on to keep your emotions in check,) as a way to ease the pain and fear that one of them might not come back. I'm so glad his father survived in the end!

      @Room2703Reacts The reason james wrote this song is because his Dad was dying on kidney failure and needed a transplant to survive.
      When James served in the British military and went to Kosovo, his Father, who also had served his whole life went to sat goodbye and to make it less formal and less emotional so James could go to war in the right state of mind, his dad said to him, " I'm not your Father, you're not my Son. We're just two grown men saying goodbye."
      This video was made while they believed his Dad was dying and after the release of the video a distant relative came forward and was tested, indeed matched and was able to give a kidney to save his life.
      Hope this helps?! ❤

  • @Maerahn

    Yes, that was his father in the video; it was all filmed in one take, and that was the first time his father had heard that song. He was terminally ill at that point with stage 4 kidney cancer, but fortunately a donor was found after this video went viral, and he survived.
    James Blunt often writes about his real-life experiences, and another I can recommend is 'Carry You Home,' which was written about an event during his time serving in combat. I won't spoil it any more than that, but you'll probably need the tissues for that one too - it's a beautiful song.

  • @LadyIrrigator

    There aren't many songs about a positive relationship between a father and son. So this is part of the reason I think it hits so hard aside from the lyrics and performance being simply beautiful.

    That was no auto tune and only one take. James’s father Charles allowed him to do this with him because he only had weeks left and it was for James to have. Everyone in that room was crying at the end except Charles. He told them he wasn’t dead yet. You cannot sing some notes when you really cry but no one cared.
    James is a prolific song writer and He got the idea from a poem his sister wrote. If this song hadn’t been released then a first cousin also named Charles that no one knew wouldn’t have come forward and been a match. His Dad deserved that because he donated one of his kidney’s years ago because he is a rare match, James and his sisters were not matches. Charles was doing well last we heard.
    After his Dad was better James did this in another video playing the piano and it isn’t the same. It is the raw emotion that made this so great. Thank you.

    James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away a few years ago.

    Hi Luke . I’m Denise from Yorkshire only just found you. Love your reaction to James’s song. It’s just heartbreaking 💔 one take so emotional. My dad passed away in 1988 ,but the pain never goes away. My dad was in so much pain he was praying to God to take him. He really suffered so much. He passed away In the middle of the night. My sister called round to tell me . I sat in the room with him on my own for about an hour. I was talking to him all the time even though I knew he had left us . I still miss my dad so much 😢😢Great Reaction 💞💞Denise from Yorkshire 😢😢🙏🙏🙏

    The critical takeaway from this song is to never wait to tell your parents, and really everyone you know and love, how much they have blessed you and how much they mean to you. I was there for both my mom and dad's final breaths. They died 11 days apart. Our relationsip was not good though i tried and tried and tried. I loved them both but i finally realized i was their great disappointment in life and they let me know that on their deathbed. But still i was there taking care of them until the end. The sing hits me in a slightly different, not wholly different way than it did for James. I could never say the words to my dying Dad he did. My dad and i just didn't have that kind of relationship. But i loved him. Even after he died and i was waiting for them to come take his body away i couldn't say the words. I tried so hard but i just couldn't speak. I live with that regret and self-loathing to this day and its been 8 years. I pray that no one else will make that mistake. Even if its hard do it. Have the conversation don't leave it unsaid.

    • @allisonstogden3240
      @allisonstogden3240 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are different ways of telling him/them. Your actions spoke louder than your words by being there. But if you feel you have left something unsaid perhaps you could say it out loud as if you were speaking to him or his photo. Whatever works works for you

    James was a captain in the british military and fought in the kosovo war. His father ( in the video) was a colonel. They had both served and when they would get deployed, they would tell each other they were just 2 grown men saying goodbye. His dad had stage 4 kidney disease and dying, but after the video a distant relative came forward and donated a kidney and he survived. The video was taken in one shot as James stated he wouldn't be able to do more than one take, so it's completely real and raw.
    I lost my mom and my dad 3 months apart, my dad coming up on 4 years. The video has me bawling every time.

    The song you remember is "You're beautiful" which is his biggest hit. Next is probably "Goodbye my lover" but he has so many other good songs.
    Emotional songs - Carry you home, No Bravery, same mistake...
    More upbeat ones - Bonfire heart, love me better, the greatest

    You had a great interpretation of the song. I had noticed that too how he still called him Daddy. I heard that they were both military men and whenever James was leaving on deployment he and his father would say that line that I am not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye upon his departure. But deep down that was his Daddy. I am sure others will explain the circumstances that lead James to write the song but I had to tell you that you were the first reactor I heard mention that.

    This American is embarrassed to admit that she did not learn about Windrush and the Windrush Generation until well into adulthood. It deserves celebration!
    Finding out about the Windrush Generation completely accidentally by happening to be in England when there was an issue with passports and citizenship for Windrush Elders pushed me into doing a large scale project about legislation and governmental interaction with Windrush “kids”. This led to a greater understanding of the large scale discrimination and mistreatment by the police, riots, and unsolved murders of Black Britons due to lack of investment from the authorities.
