  • The legendary operetta "Im weissen Rössl" (The White Horse Inn) needs no introduction. Created by Ralph Benatzky in collaboration with Eric Charell, Robert Stolz, Anton Profes and Robert Gilbert - the operetta premiered on the 8th of November 1930 at the Grosses Schauspielhaus.
The operetta was an adaptation of the popular comedy "Im weissen Rössl" by Oscar Blumenthal. The operetta was a truly modern one featuring tangos and foxtrotts as well as traditional tunes. The premiere cast included Max Hansen as Leopold and Camilla Spira as Josepha as well as Siegfried Arno and Paul Hörbiger.
These days "Im weissen Rössl" is usually played as a classical operetta and not as the revue-operetta it was intended to be.
French and English adaptations soon followed. In France "Im weissen Rössl" became "L'auberge du Cheval blanc" and in English "The White Horse Inn". In 1936 it premiered on Broadway where it ran for 223 performances.
In Belgium "Im weissen Rössl" became extremely popular. A popular variety theatre on the Belgian coast was named after it and still carries the name...
Several movie versions were made as well.

To Germans and Austrians watching that movie around 1960 in the cinema the qppeal came from the elder habit to make vacations in the 'Alpine region for climbing and or hiking. there. and the typical Hotels there really looked much alike alltogether. I have known one from my childhood at the 'Achensee.
But of course the performence of the back then so popular actors did a lot tor the success also of the material based on a very successfull novel from 1879l But since the material became several times reworked as in the US- Musical version THE WHITE WORSE INN.for example

My favorite out of this whole operetta is the waltz
"Mein Liebeslied muess ein walzer sein"
My Love song should be a waltz

Wonderful, thank you! I shall show it in class tomorrow - just wish we could have subtitles, German and English! But that might be too much to expect? :)

quite interesting, I saw the reconstruction of the 1930s score @ Gärtnerplatz Theatre Munich, and this sounds related ... while the 1960s movie with Peter Alexander is IMO disgusting. DE/AT post war entertainment was on a very low level.
