OK, this looks AWESOME! I love the minimalist approach and that it's a what-you-see-is-what-you-get interface. It's like a modernized Boss ME-80. You've shown a lot of cool stuff on this channel, but this is one of the first times I'm having to conrol my GAS
I think you nailed it on the head about how some "all-in-one" pedals will make you get lost in everything it has to offer and never really landing where you want to be in the end and you are constantly searching for want you really want. Some just have WAY too many options for me. This seems to be more user friendly and very versatile for finding exactly what you want to do with it. I enjoyed seeing the reverb part of this and the way you gave examples on how to use that to your benefit. I have an old Korg AX3000G that use to just overwhelm me with all it had and I'd usually settle for a preset most of the time, but yet always searching for what I really wanted. My most current under-rated pedal I'd throw at you to try is the TC Electronics FANGS distortion pedal. For the money that pedal can't be beat for the tone it generates. Thanks for your content I've become a big fan of your channel. I appreciate how you review things. Keep up the great work and content.
Mike, your TH-cam channel is one of my favorites. You are knowledgeable and amazingly talented. I value your opinions and I want to thank you for what you do. :)
I’m going to age myself a little on this one. I got my first amp about 40 years ago. It had 3 knobs and none of them made it sound any good. I’m truly envious of the level of quality that is available for young budding guitarists nowadays. It was fun watching you trying not to explode with excitement demoing your new gear. Glad I subscribed. Thanks dude.
I feel really fortunate. My first amp was a Yamaha G100 212 SIII. I got it in the 80s, and despite being ss, was an awesome amp. I could never understand the hate that ss got.
Mike, you're smart and hilarious which are two essentials for any channel. All your stuff is fun. I'm not sure I think the Blackstar is work the price but as you said the tech is getting there. It's a good time to be a guitar player. Keep it up!
Like the dude, like the channel . Bunches of editing, a crazy amount actually. That out the way. Is it me and my hi-fi? Or could anyone hear the difference between 6L6,EL84...etc??? I couldn't. Other than that, pretty sweet.
My first multi effects pedal was a zoom 505. Found it used for $20 at a music-go-round when I was a teenager. Back then there weren't even any cab' sim's or ir's, only drive/distortions, reverbs, delays, and modulation effects. I've also used line 6, Digitech, and Vox multi effects pedals. Currently using another zoom, a G3XN, and soon getting a HeadRush MX5. Not as easy as your Blackstar, but much more versatile. Once my amp blew out after 3 songs on a 12 song set list at a huge festival. I finished the gig with a Digitech rp pedal direct into the p.a. and it didn't sound too bad. 😊
A little trick I use to remove that “digital high end” you get from modelers, is to throw my old MXR pedal in front of it(in the off position). The non True Bypass of the pedal naturally rounds off some of that brittle high end.
I've always been skeptical of amp modelers but this one doesn't sound too bad. I'm glad your channel is growing. I've been watching you since you did mostly shorts. Well done sir.
I agree with you on ROOM with digital. For some time now, I’ve been adding Room to fill-out the sound (and adding Reverb if I can). I play live weekly and I go all digital, all the time.
I have the line 6 PodGo wireless and I have found a tone of super nerdy guitar fun in messing around with the tones and irs and amp sims and fx pedals and all kinds of crazy rabbit hole ideas. It's awesome!
Ever since I found this channel, I have been babbling about how much I enjoyed using amp simulators over the real McCoy. They are much easier to adjust to what you hear, and they are fully integrated into your recording Arsenal. Back in the late 90s, I got myself a Zoom 3030, my first multi-effects unit. The only thing I thought it lacked was a proper approximation of the Boston guitar sound, but that isn't anything any manufacturer has ever included in multi-effects generators or amp simulators anyway. It may be true that there ain't nothing like the real thing, but it is sort of Overkill trying to get your hands on everything you want at your disposal when a single devices such as a Line 6 Pod, Firehawk or Helix, my current Boss ME-80 or the model you demoed here can cover it all.
What is lacking right now is a review of these modellers/ amp in a box by some-one who has chosen to gig with it exclusively for a while and share their thoughts!
Under rated pedal is the JHS Series 3 harmonic tremolo. Yeah it trems. But the boost knob is killer. I can crank it and turn the trem down and it's just a great sounding boost/OD.
My first multiFX pedal was the Digitech RP-50. Aside From delay, the only setting is use was “rotary”. It’s supposed to be used with 2 amps but I only had one.
Mike. I love your videos. I look forward to watching them. You should really try the Boss ME80 it's what I use. It's an all in one that is incredible. I use it with 2 amps for a stereo/ dual mono type setup both just on the edge of breakup. I got straight into the effects return so my amps don't color the effects unit.
Need a follow up video where you test it out as an amp through a cab. Honestly it’s great you can do silent stage but this thing shines as an amp! Tick off those neighbors!
What did he use in this video? He didn't really explain. The guitar is plugged directly into the device, but does he then connect the device to an amp or studio monitors?
@@wbae1340 Pretty clear to me he's testing the IR's and going direct with the XLR cable. Also this thing is a 100 watt class D amp and said he was happy he made a video without ticking off his neighbors. It almost has to be IR's only.
@@wbae1340 sure thing man! IR’s is a digital recreation of a speaker. IR stands for Impulse Response. A lot of digital devices model amplification very well but the mass market has only recently begun to understand the significance of the speaker to the sound of the guitar amp. Without an IR if you wanted to record the signal coming from your amp the wave form is very spiky and harsh sounding. It’s a sound, but the inefficiency of a speaker actually smooths the wave form and is responsible for the overall tone of any guitar amp. I find it interesting how this seems more hands on with the tangible knobs, as opposed to the Helix line, where the programing part needs to be done more in the computer. What are your thoughts?
