    I'm so glad I finally passed that phase. I went from chasing boutique amps until settling upon Amplitube on my MacBook... then I woke up. Who am I kidding, I can't fix this addiction 😅

    Dude you have found your space in this TH-cam/online world and it's become one of my favorite channels. Alongside Rick Beato Rhett Shul, and JHS, I look forward to your videos almost daily. BTW, good voice too.
    Since I've had to medically retire, I've lost the ability to play guitar or piano and I've replaced a lifetime of playing with watching you and a few others. So, from a old hippie, I'm really thankful to be able to listen and play vicariously through you.
    Thanks.
    Peace ✌️

    as a drummer listening to your channel I am finding these videos fascinating and I never knew how similar we drummers and guitar players really are when it comes to our sound. I wanted to hear you sing that song in it's entirety.

    Sounds fantastic! The Royer 121 does so much heavy lifting for guitar tones. I remember when I watched Beato's video talking about the classic combo of a 121 & SM57 and IMO like 95% of the tone was because of the 121, lol.

    A little late to the party on this video, but had to just thank you for rocking a capo on electric guitar. Some people feel it’s a blasphemous crutch, but I see it as a useful tool that ultimately makes great music! However, you don’t think using a capo like the D’addario NS Pro with a thumb wheel would give you more control over ensuring you don’t throw the guitar out of tune like gator style capos tend to because they’re too tight for electric strings (especially when paired with thinner necks)? I use the aforementioned D’addario capo on both acoustic and electric and love being able to dial in just the right amount of tension. If you’ve never tried a capo with a thumb wheel, please do! Tyvm!

    Mike, you make nice content. But if there is one thing that ribbon mics dont do well, its flat frequency response. Which as it turns out, is good for players of electric guitar, and recorders of guitar amplifiers. The Royer 121, has an unusual freq curve(for a ribbon mic), dipping in the low mids, bumping at about 5k, and then sloping gently down to about 12 to 15k, and then gently sloping up toward 20k, where it more or less flattens out. There are other ribbon mics, Coles 4038, and AEA ribbon mics that exhibit the usual ribbon mic response, which is a large bump in the low mids and a pronounced dip between 8 and 10k which makes then unusually dark, and in need of EQ when mix time comes along.And then there is the speaker in a Princeton, which cannot reproduce much of anything above 8k. Which is why ribbons and coil mics like the SM57 are a natural match for recording guitar amps. Another ribbon that is a wonderful match is the Beyer 160, especially when paired with a 57...

    I've only interacted with digital models of the 121, but it's always the "mic" I choose when using a modeler. Both the 121 and the 10 sounded glorious in this video. How do you place your mics?

    • @royerlabs
      @royerlabs ปีที่แล้ว

      As a guitarist, I chased great tone for years. Most of us do. But we don't think enough about (this is the part he's saying most of us miss) the link between the amazing sound coming out of our amps and getting that sound to record well. The choice of microphone is everything, and a good ribbon mic will "hear" the amp amazingly well. Other mics can sound good too, but if you want to capture THAT sound, the way you hear it at your amp, a ribbon mic does it best, by far. When I learned that in 1997 (from Dave Royer a year before we opened Royer Labs), I thought it was going to change every guitarist's life. -John Jennings

    • @jhs564
      @jhs564 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@royerlabs Personally I've spent more money on microphones than guitars, and I own and love your R121. But the angle of the video was off. Not all guitarist are recording artist or need to be. And if they need to record, I think if 99.9% of guitarist will find a way to capture the tone that works for them, because they would also care about how they capture their tone... last week Mike raved about the ox and that its not even important to be mic'ing up any cabinets nowadays.. Sims and stuff is not for me, but there are many ways to Rome! To be frank, it feels a bit disingenuous to show off the OX as the new solution to everything one week, and then say that all guitarists are wrong for not using Royer mic's the next week. There is something off about that pitch, when it doesn't need to be. Royer mics are great in any case. It would look much better to focus on the actual qualities of the microphones, than to say guitarist dont care about their recorded tone for not using Royer. Mike is obviously talented. But for viewers, I think it's important that these recommendations feels genuine when you are receiving this high end gear to promote. It felt like a poor sales pitch. I'm sorry. Still watching
