RC Lawnmower. First ever run.

  • I'm designing this Remote Controller Lawnmower to solve a specific problem. I have a couple of acres of land that has gone wild with Hawthorn trees (very spikey) and other prickly stuff like Wild Rose, Green Briar, and Bar Berry.
I need a mower that can run under the Hawthorn trees and mulch up the prickly ground cover. There is not enough height for a person to be able to pass under the trees, so I figured an RC Lawnmower would do the trick.
This mower is a second-hand Self-Propelled Craftsman mower, that I've removed the self propelled drive, and replaced it with a 24V Alternator. The belt-driven Alternator generates power to run the two electric driver motors and keep the small 24V Sealed Lead Acid Battery charged.
This first fun is up a 30 degree bank with a ditch at the bottom. Not much grass to cut, but a good test for the drive.
The front caster supports need some beefing up, but otherwise it's a great start.

The forbidden remote foot removal device. Nice

Could you please list the parts you used. particularly the motors and drive wheels. Links would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This was on our robotics team's "Summer Build" list, but we didn't quite get to it. I've seen several of these projects, but this is the first one that I've seen using an alternator to power the drive system. Did you just google for the 24v alternator? @gearsinc

Hi. Yeah, I didn't want to add huge batteries that I needed to charge independently. I also wanted to go with 24V to avoid huge power cables, and high current. The Alternator is one used by farm equipment (apparently), but priced about the same as a regular one. I chose a used mower that had a front wheel power assist and I just placed the alternator where I could direct drive it what that belt (instead of driving the front wheels). The motor RPM is in the range where the alternator should be able to generate up to 40 A. Each motor has a stall current of 18A. The two small gell batteries are enough to drive the mower around without the engine running for 30 minutes. The Alternator is a "one wire" one, which means it just has two connections, Ground and 24V. www.amazon.com/dp/B004KMTRXK

@@GEARSinc Did you have to space the motor up from the cutting deck to install a pulley to drive the alternator?

what is the capacity of the battery used?

The batteries are only 7AH, but they just keep the electronics alive when the motor is not running, and they act as buffers when it it running. The 24V Alternator actually powers the main drive motors.

@@GEARSinc my motors came from a Jazzy mobility chair and will do 24v but I chose to keep it at 12 v because im cutting the lawn, not drag racing lawnmowers. I originally started out with two lead acid garden tractor batteries in parallel but on the V. 2.0 I opted to use a one 30AH Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. Lots of capacity and the battery only weights 7 lbs and change. Look into retarding your EXPO settings to improve your overall control. Doing this with dumb down the joystick around its centered position so when you apply some pressure to the stick it doesnt got straight to 100%. Im using 50 for forward channel no. 3 and 40 for left and right on ch. 4. Very controllable at slow and fast speeds.
