I think that when it starts to be a job with all the stress that it entails it kills this spark of creativity and pleasure that you find when you do it only when you feel it.
wow i’m just about to graduate art school and relate so much with what you’ve talked about with burnout at the end! I would spend so much time trying to make a “perfect” project every time, it really exhausted me and I would feel no motivation to draw for myself. This video came at the best time for me, I’ll definitely try some of the tips you mention, thanks Anoosha! :) ❤️
I totally get this! I’m of an age where I grew up before digital art was really a thing. Traditional art was where I cut my teeth and developed… then in my early 20s I just stopped drawing regularly. In my mid 30s I signed up for a graphic design course, online with the academy of art. I only lasted a few months before dropping it, but a few years later I revisited with a different school and finally started with digital art. I love it so much! I left my previous career to pursue illustration and am not looking back. Just lately I’ve been wanting to get back into traditional art, but it’s overwhelming… the supplies, the mess, the inability to easily make changes the way you can digitally… so I haven’t gotten started painting yet. 😂
Traditional painting just takes SO much more work haha; the color mixing, buying supplies, the lack of digital fixes like undos and adjustments, prepping before you start etc… but I also think all the work makes it feel more rewarding as well in a way haha
Glad you took a break. You look rested. I am getting back into art for fun after retiring from a nursing career. I purchased a XP-pen 22R tablet but have yet to do anything digital. I find my self painting on canvas with acrylic. I am also taking two classes online illustration which I love and Graphic Design which I don't like. The teacher is very mean. I should have dopped the class but I hate to give up. I think I will take more Illustration classes after summer. I will take all summer to turn on my tablet and learn how to use it.
It was so nice to be able to hear that even successful artist experience feeling blocked because it might not turn out well, that’s definitely my experience but the Jake the dog quote has followed me around for years as well; thanks for sharing your process, your paintings are gorgeous can’t wait for the next video
Hi Anoosha!! Thank you a lot for this video!! I think I couldn't relate more with some stuff you mentioned in here and I think is so important what you did for yourself in this time! Sometimes what we need is not to put so much pressure in ourselves and keep drawing and take breaks! Thank you for all your words and kindness, meant a lot to me! I truly wish you the best! (:
Giiiiirl I relate with this so much. Especially feeling scared to draw if you try new mediums or go back to some that you haven’t been practising for a while. Your account is really inspirational and I have been listening you almost every morning now while having my breakfast 🥰 Thank you for the content! 🙏🏻
Hello! I’m so excited that I’ve found your channel. I relate to so much of the issues you’ve discussed. I’m in the process of self publishing a book that I’ve just completed writing (and I’m attempting to illustrate). The problem is I don’t really know what my voice is with illustration. I come from a tattoo background so I’ve had the opportunity to try multiple styles. This may be nice in some aspects, but really I feel it has stunted my growth as an individual artist. I am currently enrolled in school for art education, but now I am reconsidering all of this as I’ve always wanted to be an author and illustrator. Needless to say, I feel a bit stuck at the moment. But… Your experiences and advice have helped me tremendously and I can’t wait to continue watching your journey! Thank you for sharing it with us ☺️
I'm literally painting while listening to this video and going through the exact. same. thing. I've been a digitial artist but I can't stop thinking about painting this year, and boy am I rusty. It it SO encouraging hearing someone else struggle with this and knowing that I'm not the only one!
I hear you about the burnout, I didn't even feel mine. I just decided to take January off and it's only when I stopped mase me realize how much I was going, so I took February off too
Not a professional artist, just a hobbiest, but I totally stopped drawing the past year and a half because of anxiety over the panini, George Floyd, and general day to day. The only thing that got me out of my drawing funk was the rare opportunities to meet with friends in person, I like doodling birthday cards. For me, drawing and coloring with analog tools ( markers, watercolors, and colored pencils) has become less stressful because I’m incapable of making everything perfect… if that makes any sense. I’ve never seen myself as a traditional artist, but it has been comforting. Thanks for sharing your art, the gouache paintings came out lovely. And I can’t wait to see your travel journal, I miss traveling.
Seeing this kinda made me rethink my career option.. coz I'm pursuing art as a career and i love to travel and I'm thinking of doing that alot when I grow up but idk if I'll able to..
Painting traditionally: I know that feeling; when you want to improve your traditional skills... but you are so frustrated walking out of your comfort zone that you want so much to escape and return to your digital (and a lot more comfortable) skills. It's a loop! 😅
Hey Anoosha loved this video! I am sorta in a similar place with my art myself, like you in dealing with burnout is just exhausting & Lonely. This video is both helpful and comforting thank you for all the tip you shared. Being a freelancer is so hard and it would be great to be a part of a community of like minded artists, I’d love to know the name of the discord group you mentioned you were part off.
Hi! This discord group is a private one between my friends, but I definitely encourage you to either start one with your own connections that could slowly grow, or look into other communities like SCBWI to meet people! :)
I'm a freelance illustrator and have been feeling stuck in my career as well- that discord server sounds SO helpful! Is it an invite only thing? How did you find it? I have never used discord so that whole world is very intimidating to me. haha!
The server I’m a part of is just between my friends, but anyone can start one up! Invite your friends, and slowly build up your connections and community from there :)
You said you wanted a studio. Have you thought of asking your apartment manager to let you know when a 2 bedroom apartment becomes available. You can use one room for you studio. I know buying a house in Toronto is expensive.
We currently own our apartment, and while we for sure are going to make sure our next place (which would most likely be a house!!) has a dedicated studio room for myself, we’re still saving up and searching at this point :) So at the moment I’m looking into studio rentals!
We Californian call your apartment a condo and I understand why you can't upgrade. But a rental space maybe be hard to get to in the winter snow. Have you thought of getting in touch with a realtor? They may know of or will keep their eyes open for someone who is looking to down-grade from a larger condo or townhouse for a small fee. Older couples down-grade all the time once there kids are gone.

so happy that you got to do a real vacation/break!! can't wait to see more of the work from your refreshed art brain :))
ahh thank you paloma!!

Wow I can see your confidence growing over the years in your videos!
Agree. Holidays are vital to our health. Need to schedule them in.

Did you draw spots illustrations on a transparent layer in procreate or on white?
For my picture book? All my drawings would be on their own layers, so yes transparent.
@@AnooshaSyed thank you! :)
