  • Finally my long overdue look at the mechanics of combat in Savage Worlds is here. In today's video we look at the basics of combat in Savage Worlds, including initiative, ranged vs melee attack rolls, aces/critical success, critical failures, how to deal damage and the effects of being dealt wounds.

    I do not think AP reduces Toughness, it reduces Armor bonus to Toughness. AP has no effect on creatures with no armor.
    "AP (Armor Piercing): The weapon or round ignores this
    many points of Armor. A weapon with an AP value of 4, for
    instance, ignores 4 points of Armor. Excess AP is simply lost."
    It makes sense. Hard ammo (designated to penetrate armor) does not do extra damage to stuff that is soft (like a giant slug), they just pass through. Shotguns (no AP) are better at killing soft stuff, as they do more damage (relatively to distance).

      Thanks for reminding me about that! It gets a little tricky keeping all the intricacies straight sometimes, especially when playing across so many different systems.

      @@TheManBehindtheScreen Yeah it is things like this that make me think SW is not as fast as advertised. I do like the idea of multiple weapons having different use cases in which they shine a bit more than others.

      Keep your eyes on the channel, then. I'm actively in the process of revisiting and revising this series to correct the mistakes I made, expand into a couple more advanced topics, and hopefully make each video a little more digestible.

    In Roll20 you can deal cards to each player and enemy in the Turn Tracker, then sort by Card/Suit.

    I'm not very sure about what version of SW you're explaining, but I think in SWADE, if you get a raise in your attack roll you get an extra 1D6 added to your damage roll. Even if you get several raises you just add +1D6, not +1D8.

    I like the savage world system and its cleaver how they did initiative. However after going to D6 group initiative I dont know if there is anything that can beat that system. It's so much faster and way more intense.

    • @TheManBehindtheScreen
      @TheManBehindtheScreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've recently grown to love d6 group initiative, too. The overall pace and intensity of it is fantastic and if not for the fact a lot of mechanics are built into SW's deck based system I'd probably swap it for d6 group personally.

    • @antoniusmaximus3174
      @antoniusmaximus3174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheManBehindtheScreen Yes it is amazing, I think d6 would work epically for Deadlands. Either you get the drop on them , they get the drop on you and if its a tie its a free for all shoot out. I mean that's literally how a gun fight goes lol.

    • @TheManBehindtheScreen
      @TheManBehindtheScreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antoniusmaximus3174 That's a great point. I could definitely see Deadlands benefiting from that change, especially since I've always felt the Joker bonuses harm the horror aspect of that game a bit. Makes things a little too swingy. D6 group would absolutely capture the pulpy nature of the Spaghetti Westerns, too. Think I'll give it a try the next time I run Deadlands.

    So, Savage Worlds combat takes a long time I guess?

    • @TheManBehindtheScreen
      @TheManBehindtheScreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, a standard combat like this one should only take a few minutes.

    • @TheManBehindtheScreen
      @TheManBehindtheScreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To clarify: a combat of this size in Savage Worlds will usually take between 5 and 15 mins. This video's much longer than that because I'm breaking down each phase on my own. And, admittedly, also because I lacked experience with video making at the time I made this. I need to revisit and revise these.

    • @patrickfitzpatrick2945
      @patrickfitzpatrick2945 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheManBehindtheScreen Thanks for clarifying =) .. I´ve had an eye on SW, but I'm not the crunchy type and like gridless combat. Maybe I should give it a shot?
      Do you know of any "detective/investigative" SW games btw?
      Great video! Thx =)

    • @TheManBehindtheScreen
      @TheManBehindtheScreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickfitzpatrick2945 SW works well with gridless combat. That's how I usually run it, often using theater of the mind. (Occasionally I'll use dungeon tiles or UDT to help visualize a scene, but that's a rare occasion.)
      As for detective or noir themed games, I don't know of any settings specific for that, but Deadlands does have an expansion book called Deadlands Noir that's specifically meant for pulpy 1920's gumshoe style games. Think something along the lines of Dick Tracy, a little more action oriented than investigation focused.
      And in terms of investment, I'd say SW is worth looking into. The softcover books are only about $20-25, compared to D&D books which run $50-60, so its definitely one of the more affordable options out there.

    • @patrickfitzpatrick2945

      @@TheManBehindtheScreen Thanks a lot! Googling "Deadlands Noir" as we speak. lol.
      A little bit of Pulpy Dick Tracy won´t hurt at all, and like most games I´m sure it can be slightly tweaked to fit my style =)
      I´ll definitly have a look and for $20-25 it´s a steal =)
      Thanks again!
