Thank you thank you thank you for showcasing some of the BASS sounds on the Bassline. I've looked at half a dozen videos, even those by Erica Synths, and nobody can resist the modulation/ resonance crazy sauce. You are the one who has sold me on this box because now I know for sure the bass is for real. :)
It's a good time to be a synth nerd; we're all trapped in our caves with our equipment. Your videos are always enjoyable, and you have an engaging way of talking about what is clearly your passion. Stay safe!
I didn't understand half of this but your way of talking, sympathetic appearance and engagement or enthusiasm makes this a joy to watch. Take care, stay safe.
A lot of people aren't aware that about half of all the synth parts in classic acid tracks are actually Sh-101 lines, not 303 lines. The 101 is almost as important to the history of acid as the 303. So it makes sense that this has a bit of a 101 vibe to it.
The "ARP Thing" you´ve struggled with, works! Start Sequencer, then the Arp Mode (Shift&ARP), put the Notes in, while holding the buttons press Select/Gate. Release the Step Buttons, hit Record.
the bassline from Where's Your Head At is is a track called ME by Gary Numan. Not sure if it was sampled directly or just referenced because I haven't listened side by side. But cheggit out.
Hi Ricky. I always enjoy your videos. As a live performer, I find the vision of a live performer and details that can be so important when performing live. Thanks a lot.
The knobs on this unit are soooo nice and chunky! They look extremly satisfying to use. Also noticed you didn't use the Drive knob until briefly near the end. Would have loved to hear more of it.
Awesome review and video as always! After seeing this video months ago, I just got my DB-01 over the holidays. Seeing that it could do a large variety of things and I thought it would be a nice complement to my TB-03, rather than a replacement. The DB-01 sounds fantastic! From massive to growly to silky smooth, it is the perfect companion to the TB-03 - letting the TB-03 do the 303 things it does best and the DB-01 do all the rest :)
You're the best synth reviewer out there, Ricky. I will always check out of there is a review by you if I plan to get a synth or similar instrument. This synth is definitely one that caught my curiosity a little extra and I think you are spot on that it sounds like a mix of 101 and 303, with some unique features. Love that Erica sticks to adding the Polivoks filter, and that double bbd is pretty genius.
I bought one of these last year following Ricky's review. It's totally sick, and Erica are a great company. I suggested a firmware update to increase the LFO cycle from 1 bar to 4, and they did it a month later. Ricky is right, this is SH-101 territory, and it's massive. What makes it special from my other mono synths is that the Envelope is soooo fast, and there is no click whatsoever. This is a future classic!
Take awhile but I picked one up used off FB Marketplace this summer and you're spot on! This thing brings smiles and foot tapping so easily. It just begs to be paired with drums and other things. So good!
First vid I watched here, super nice. The calm but focused delivery (plus the color grading) kinda remind me of a Philip Bloom review. Looking forward to more!
I've been eyeing this up for months. Nice review. Maybe if I move my bass station 2 and td3 on, I could make room for this. Or maybe not, I'm sure I can make room 👀
Thanks for the video Ricky, good stuff! I recently got the Erica Synths Baseline eurorack module and pairing it with the Arturia Minibrute 2S sequencer is heaven. Seems to fix some of your gripes, such as live recording your gate length. Also gives you pressure sensitive pads to route as modulation. Something to consider if people already own some of that gear or are looking to dive into modular but like this thing's sound.
7:23. ‘Says the guy who’s not going to use this feature ever’. Just brilliant Ricky, your face says it all, what a great piece of gear! 🤣 Order placed.
24:37 is the sexiest thing ever. I was like "Mkay he's gettin a little wild. Must be about to cut it." Then the beat came in and I realized... Ricky had a plan the whole time.
Yeah - I played with this at a music shop around month ago - ooh so dope. Yeah other patrons listened in and were ready to buy. Pricey but maybe not. But I think it is great.
@@xnflg3074 ah OK, I don't own it. From the FM I know it is recording the changes of knobs and sliders. But never as comfortable as it looks on the Erica!
s müller It can do stepped locks too. If you hold down a step button on the ribbon sequencer and turn a knob, it’ll lock that in memory and apply it during playback of the sequence. The Drum is easily the most complex of the Volca line.
I copy this comment: I didn't understand half of this but your way of talking, sympathetic appearance and engagement or enthusiasm makes this a joy to watch. Take care, stay safe. :)
Thank you for the samples, Ricky! Me and guys used one in our track: Лужа - Руки-Пауки. Just copy/paste it in any streaming service if you’re interested 🦾
Reminds me of how Maschine does automation. It’s great for performance as you can move controls around and still have your automation stay relative. I just wish this had presets and usb...that would be perfect for me then. Also agree about automating the unison.
Actually, if you have one of the big ‘uns like the Rytm, that’s how the performance controls work. Just not the trig locks. I’m also like 99% sure it’s how aftertouch and breath are modulated as well. On my faderfox I have knobs mapped to perf on my Rytm (don’t like the pad press idea) as well as a knob mapped to aftertouch as a mod source.
Lol barf, this thing intrigued me, love how big the knobs are to actually perform the thing which is lacking in a lot of products, plus it sounds huge through monitors

I REALLY love Erica Synths' stuff! Everything they do is unique in some cool ways, even really basic stuff. I wish I had more money to give them for synths😄 Edit: I love the "camera 2" for sponsors 😋
Interesting that you think of it in terms of an SH-101 rather than just a TB-303. Of course, the MC-202 is - barring a few differences - a 101 with a sequencer and has sometime been disparagingly and unfairly called a poor man's (or woman's) 303 because of its ability to get close to the squelchiness of the 303 at half the 2nd hand price. The 101/202 is much more versatile than that and less of a 'one trick pony,' so that's great news for the DB-01if as you say it's more 101 than 303. Great 303 like form factor and I love the buttons, just like the Zen Echo. Erica don't have the resources of the 'B' word and so you need to consider that when you look at the price I guess. Goes without saying but hey, great vlog as usual Ricky.
shit, your videos always get me inspired to make something, lmao. pausing vid half-way, i’ll be finishing it after i get some jams out of my system 😝 much love, stay safe y’all
Super clicky knobs. I've had my eye on this for a while. Looks really fun, I'd get it before an Avalon, or pretty much any other "bassline", but I won't because I already have plenty of things that can do bass.
Ah man that thing sounds schweet! Did you talk about build quality and I missed that part? Do the knobs feels as good as they look? And is the body as metal and solid as it looks? Seems to be the same size as a Volca but MUCH better. I want one!
This and other videos sold me on this synth, but as "simple" as it is, I find it hard to get anything useable out of it. Maybe I just need more time with it, but I'd love another video that explores getting the most out of it.
