    My cousin got herself a BYD Sealion just shy of 3 months now. She drives to work and back using full electric mode only and charged her sealion every night in the garage. She hasn't refilled her petrol tank yet thus far:)

      sounds like an EV would be perfect replacement for the SeaLion? we found the same without PHEV Outlander with its 40Km EV only range. we were wasting $$ on servicing a petrol motor we weren't using

      Sadly the ICE still needs regular servicing. And the tiny battery degrades way faster than in an EV too. Long term a really bad idea.

    The shark looks like a stepping stone to full EV. The architecture should allow extra batteries to replace the petrol motor to make a full EV

      Hope so, with 100Km EV only range, i am assuming only about 80Km in real world, but that will still cover almost all trips people make in Utes, so hopefully, will make the move to full EV versions easy.

    You answered you own question. Most people who have utes use them for holidays camping ect. Now they may only do this once a year. But even if they never do it, they still want to be able to hook up the boat and drive 300km or more for the family holiday. Even with a 100kwh battery, with big tyres and towing 2t your range will be shit. Pehv makes much more sense. The battery is big enough to do your day in day out activities fully electric but you can still go on big trips without range anxiety.

      most? i think it might be a lot less, most seme to be tax deduction vehicles, and rarely leave the urban environment, Of course there are lots that still tow, and do go out on regular camping trips and adventures, but dont think that's the majority.

      @SydneyEV I completely agree most don't go anywhere most of the time. But even if it's only once a year or maybe even once every two years, that's once to many times to be let down by lack of range and recharging in more remote areas at least in their minds. I'm personally super excited for the shark. I think phev makes alot more sense for me who actually goes remote a few times a yeah. I'll save my full electric for the seal performance. 😁

      @@Jack20585 this is what i find strange, i agree that this probably the reason many buy a ute, for that once a year, or even once every 5 yrs big trip. but to me, why suffer the bad drive quality, to rough suspension, the costs etc associated with a ute, for the 99.5% of the time you dont actually need it. i love a good road trip, and long trip, but sadly dont do them often enough, but when i do, i hire what i need for the job at that time. i dont know why so many dont consider that in Australia, drive something nice, an nice EV, and for the big trip in the next 5 yrs, hire a decent off road motorhome, of Ute and camper trailer? is it marketing? or just me?

      @MarsOzzie someone has to design and engineer this first, it's classified as second stage manufacturing. Very doable needs the market demand and someone to then design it first.

    EVs have thier place for certain use cases however still need a bit of development to be able to replace a ute.
    Reason utes are so popular is the versatility, family wagon during the week, touring on the weekend, towing, off roading, beach driving etc. Granted not every weekend they get used like this but plenty do,
    EVs downside at the moment revolve around...
    GVM (payload)
    Towing (yes 2.5 is on the low end)
    Range especially whilst doing the above, believe cyber truck gets less than 100 miles whilst towing 3.5 tonne.
    Resale value
    EVs are not selling at the rate they were with more hybrid options coming available the natural consumer shift is towards these vehicles so why would manufacturers build something that will likely not sell 🤔
    Over the next 2-3 years hybrid ute's will become the default offering a great mix of capability and range, can see it in the car segment now. EV sales stalling or trending backwards, Hybrids up 60-80%.

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, a big reason Utes are so popular, especially in urban areas, is the favourable tax breaks they get. the last 2 tradies i have ad come to my home have had Vans, and a lot o tradies in the nearby suburb under development use vans also. I wouldn't worry about resale value if most are bought for tax perks. (also Tesla in OZ resale is about the same as most similar cars in their class being about 50% over 5 yrs.)

      i think they will, not wasting time and $$ lobbying governments to hold back Ev tech.

  • @sjdtmv
    @sjdtmv 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    They will come, but most likely from a manufacturer that hasn't got any fossil fuelled utes, so they have no interest in the current spare parts business, which will come as a shock and lead the game with the others in there dust.

      thats why im looking forward to the Radar RD6 coming here, but unfortunately i think its a bit ugly compared to the competition, not that utes are attractive in the first place.

  • @h2rider953

    BYD Shark 6 is the wild card, Utes from the majors are cash cows.

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is, hopefully it will lead to more people considering EV utes when they do arrive in large numbers, but i think BYD and whoever makes the Radar EV ute will take a lot of sales rom the old manufacturers like Toyota and ford. the 100Km range will mean a LOT of buyers might not need petrol for long period of time

    Byd making f150 size full EV already with RH drive. Will be 30 to 40k less that those converted Silverado/f150 or RAMs

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      that's interesting, we need less oil product burners, but do we need the Huge American style utes? i know that there will always be a small market for the big truck sized ute, but not really in urban environment, but if the BYD is hybrid, or full EV, then thats better than a gas guzzling US size version

  • @moestrei
    @moestrei 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Utes are a bit like a Swiss Army knife. They can do a lot of things but nothing really well let alone safe. And like a heavy pocket knive they tend to pull your pants down. 99.9% you drive unloaded on a formed road carrying all that feel good gear with you for nothing. Australia's obsession with (large) utes is bonkers.....there was a time when the Toyota Corolla was the most sold vehicle in Oz....Ex Hilux 4x4 Dual cab Diesel owner here...now with EV (towing 1.85t max) and trailer.

      a lot has to do with tax incentives, ABN holder can write off their costs in less time than normal cars, and also, their advertising appealing the to great aussie outdoors manly men men works well. dont need to actually go bush every weekend, just as long as you have the side awning.

    Your theory on Utes seems sound and reasoned to You......
    But as all the accessories are not controlled or benefited by the manufacturer is an utterly flawed theory at best.
    I suspect that you are missing the point that like for like ev's compared to IC's are much heavier, accounting for battery mass to gain range. But by the time you do this to a Ute/Commercial (which are not exactly featherweights to start with) the overall gross mass becomes so large that componentary such as tyres, suspension and brakes need massive upgrade in quality and cost to become uneconomic or market limiting. Also carrying capacity and towing capacity are greatly reduced, especially if trying to keep to class norms. There's no market for a ute with payload capacity of 200kg or only 0.5T towing capacity. They may also infringe too heavily on taking the ute into different registration brackets and licence requirements to operate.....

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, the vid is my opinion piece, but also, manufacturers now offer accessories as factory options. cant really agree with he weight issue, as the best selling utes in Australia, the Ford Ranger, and Toyota Hilux range, are all heavier than the best selling EVS in Australia. the Tesla Model Y is the heaviest EV sold, and is (at heaviest option) 1900Kg. Ford ranger most popular model, is 2090Kg and the Hilux twin cab specked up model is 2100Kg, all heavier, bit not a single concern is given, especially since they are the biggest seller by far.

      Sadly Utes are the biggest sellers in Australia, most dont actually need them, but our tax laws mean anyone with a business can get claim their costs back as a tax deduction, so if everyone is driving Utes they dont need now, may as well make them electric. better than endless burning of crappy diesel.

      @@SydneyEV burning of diesel in a euro 5/6 engine is far better in the long run than toxic dangerous batteries being charged off coal fired power. Sorry. Facts are facts.
