    To avoid lifting pads, use a low melting point temperature solder and put fresh solder on all of the pads. Add some fresh low melting point solder to the tip of your iron before you start wicking, this will help with thermal conductivity and will start the wicking process. Use flux as you did. But DO NOT press the wick into the board, just let it glide along the surface. Using a thinner width wick (1.5mm) on the small stuff helps as the solder will stay hot on the wick instead of all the heat dissipating into the giant wick which acts as a heat-sink. I do this and *never* lift pads. Also, if you are able to heat the entire package (chip) up and remove it in one go that's also good as then you don't exert any mechanical pressure onto the pads as no prising is needed. Avoid prising whenever possible.

    Hello! I bought a gd emu 5.15b clone but apparently my dreamcast VA1 (J) bios is protected. and prevents me from loading ROMS (cdi,gdi) from the emulator, sending me to the main menu. the question is, is it possible to replace the bios itself - shown in your video, and will there be conflicts with the GD EMU?

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can replace the BIOS. I did a video on it and the GDEMU doesn't care.

    Well. There are much smallers wicks, those are much better on those smaller pads. The real problem comes, if the pads have a large ground plane. For those, I would say use something to pre-heat the board. Like a "thermal pad" (don't know if that's a proper term in English)... And heat the board to something like 80 celsius...
    Though, it there are plastic connectors beneath, be careful. Those might not take the heat...
    As you said, on your case the pad was not connected to anything, so it really didn't matter. Though I would have also do the "repair", just like you did. Just for the looks of it...
    "Thicker" flux also tends to make everything easier, though it leaves more stuff on the board. Use IPA to clean them, always. "Running" flux leaves less markings, but doesn't do the job (on most cases) as good as the thicker one. Pick your poison, there is no "right choice". One works better to one and other for another.
    Train on not important things.
    You can never know before, if the board has good quality or if thr pads that fly out even with minimal heat and touch... Those can be repaired, though that will always make them look kess professional...

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing this. Reading your experiences really helps me on my SMD journey. I have a few thick fluxes to try as well. Brilliant tips! Please keep them coming.

    I just installed my bios and get a black screen sadly. I have a 1.6rev and there was a guide to solder to pin 9 of the ic503 from pin 44 of the bios chip. Also wired from pin one to the same you you soldered pin 1 of the bios chip to. Everything looked well and good, reflowed and continuity and all that. Flex cables fans and all that were secured. The system powers on, disk books and initializes, you here the beep and nothing on any screen I connected to.
    I got no answer from the ebay seller but it said free 3d dev. And I assumed I could just replace the chip without piggybacking. Any knowledge of where I might go from here?

    Guys,I need your help, in the past, I used an Harbor Freight branded 1500 watt dual coil heat gun at maximum temperature like 1124 degree farenheit, but for some reason, I think I killed the old motherboard, because it didn't wanted to boot up, I got black screen, even though it was everything connected properly, no dirty connections at all. Possibly, because this heat gun was for other purposes, like stripping paint, and varnish, and not for electronics, next time, I will use it with the lowest temperature, at 572 degree farenheit instead, once I got a new motherboard

      The point is to enable booting of backups and MIL discs on machines that don’t have that capability, such as later VA1 models that had the MIL booting loophole removed. I’m not sure what was wasted? 🤔
