A year ago i watched this 4 min video and learned how to whistle. I watched many videos explaining how to do it a none helped me understand at all. But after watching this video and 1 year of practicing and experimenting on my own without any other video I learned not only how hit them but how to do runs, staccato, and also phrase. I’ve been trying this for almost a year and I still can’t reliably stay up there or move around when I hit it. I can’t tell what I’m doing wrong but I know one thing for sure is that I struggle to even sing f5 upwards without straining, and especially struggle to do it with vocal fry. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? Another thing I wondered was whether I was doing the vocal fry correctly, because he said that some people just sit on top of it without supporting it, which I didn’t really understand :(
@@0mnom all I know is that I had to practice that almost everyday for months. It was the first thing I did waking up (which btw I tend to the highest when I do it right after waking up than I normally would) and I did every chance I had even when I was at work 😂 Plus, being a huge Mariah Carey fan also helps since I see what she does and learn how not only does she use them but when and why. Her musicianship on the whistle register is otherworldly and she’s a perfect artist to emulate. Being very persistent can go a long way. I hope you’re able to do it soon, don’t give up on it.

Just my experience, but you might be using too much air and/or having tension/habits of pushing the larynx up. Practice straw phonation and give the tounge and larynxs some massage and streches for a few days
My advice is to not focus on your throat. Rather than even paying attention to your vocal chords being in your throat, imagine they're in your chest. Send any tension you feel you need there and use your proper support muscles to push through that tension and out your nose. Sing with your nose and upper two thirds of your face. That sounds REALLY fucking weird ik but it works for me EDIT: I meant that your vocal chords are in your neck/larynx area, not throat exactly. My bad

Just a simple step really in learning how to use the vocal folds to create the 'effect' singers have done so effortlessly through the years. Using staccato, phrasing, and properly breathing with runs etc. THANK YOU
4 months in, and I accidentally hit an A7 (can't hit it anymore LMAOO) My comfort range is around C#6-G6, I usually add more pressure anywhere higher than that, but not too much that it hurts, and it's hard for me to hit anything lower than that, so my whistle range is A5-A7 I'm not sure if anyone else experiences this, but I have off days, sometimes my whistles are harder than usual days, and sometimes it's easier, but it's pretty easy to hit, it does need some light pressure but it's not really anything painful unless it's like a B6 and higher, and tbh I don't really know if my voice will improve beyond this point, but I'm just happy that I can hit them at least
@@caterpoohgalore9424 it definitely wasn't possible in my first week, but later on it improved to short squeals, but later on I was able to hold a note and I improved from there. If you're having trouble singing along with the song, try taking your earphone out and try to match the tone of Mariah's whistles, it's pretty resonant. It does actually help me make it a bit easier
@@Kristoff2005 a year late but, i think ur A7 counts as a squeal and not apart of ur range because if u cant sustain it then its a squeal like if ur range is F2-F#7 then the A7 would be F2-F#7 (A7)
Man this is hard to do!!! I don't typically use Vocal Fry (lower notes) as it sounds kind of ugly to me but this is very interesting in accessing the whistle tones! I have never found a vocal coach who showed me this technique before.
Bro that has such good applications. Check out the song "knife prty" by deftones, 3:35-4:20. All the vocals you hear are done by the same male vocalist, and he screams like a girl at like 4:15 straight up. But I think it's one of the coolest additions to a song ever

When i do the staccato arpeggio things, my voice doesn't start 'sqeaking' like yours does on the higher notes. I just get a fast, fine stream of air coming out with no sound. :(

it is. so many people learned how to whistle and able to do it. as i understand it no classification of singers are barred from whistle register because we all have it. It's just not in demand like the expert singers who can bend it to their will. it's similar to how we scream and that happened uncontrollably. These singers however can 'scream' but gently, control it and enunciate with it. It's truly a specific set of skills.
Lilly you are probably doing it incorrectly your throat should always feel relaxed. Think of a yawn in the back of the throat constantly while doing the excersise. You want to keep a low larynx position and slowly release the air pressure
I was trying to reach any of 6th octaves but can't, so here's youtube search bars for answers.. and you are correct, vocal fry work... I did a metal vocal fry singing called pig squeal and reach F7 on a tuner, just need to hold it clean without the fry. Thanks for your videos!
I did this once, successful but you must very very relax. I hit Ab6 and it felt very light unlike High Falsetto. I can hit G6 with Falsetto but it sounds so kuch strain and sounds bad. I'm a bass-barutone

dimash is a prodigy, i recommend you to start with Ariana Grande, her whistle notes are the easiest. i'm not saying dimash´s vocals are impossible, but they are really hard and even more if you don't have a good control with your whistle

Can anyone else do a whistle inhale note? I physically haven’t been able to get my voice into the normal whistle register, being a baritone bass, but I have this weird ability to inhale whistle notes that I’ve measured the highest note at A7.
I do this too which is why i came to this video Bc I’ve realized I’ve been able to hit high notes like that. I found it funny but I knew it wasn’t the proper way. I can’t do it exhaling tho 🤠

For example, I will cite my case, as I also have whistles. Depending on how I make the high note in the 6th octave,the sound may vary. So,if I put in too much air,the note will sound a Whistle. Now if I apply a lot of force, it sounds like a Head Voice/Flageolet That's why there's a lot of confusion between the registers.There are people who still don't know how to differentiate one from the other. And they still confuse it with Falsetto.
I can’t really keep it consistent. Like I can hit the note but running vibrato through it doesn’t always happen. It feels like there’s another spot in my throat where air is escaping, like there’s air coming out of two parts of the bottom of a balloon and it gets rid of the purity of sound.
So I just realized not doing whistle notes for months can make it disappear from your range. And now my E7 is gone. My range was A1(Fry) - G2-G5-E7(Whistle) .

How do you do that? I can hit B6 but it is very loud, airy and unpleasant to hear. It is like very high falsetto. When I use your technique i can't do it, it seems like I'm stuck in chest voice fry.

I was finally able to squeeze out a whistle note.
Hopefully you didn’t “squeeze” it out should feel effortless and relaxed when done correctly!

When doing the exercise they got stuck and my throat tightened. What do I do?

Falsetto is “false cord closure” meaning the cords aren’t fully closing to oscillate resulting in a more breathier tone!

I can’t really keep it consistent. Like I can hit the note but running vibrato through it doesn’t always happen. It feels like there’s another spot in my throat where air is escaping, like there’s air coming out of two parts of the bottom of a balloon and it gets rid of the purity of sound.
So I just realized not doing whistle notes for months can make it disappear from your range. And now my E7 is gone. My range was A1(Fry) - G2-G5-E7(Whistle) .
Wait, how do you tell if you do a whistle note or not. I shared a video of me doing whistle on TH-cam but no one told me if I'm doing it.

How do you do that? I can hit B6 but it is very loud, airy and unpleasant to hear. It is like very high falsetto. When I use your technique i can't do it, it seems like I'm stuck in chest voice fry.

Make sure to keep a low larynx and slowly release air pressure.
How do you do vocal fry in your upper register? I have bass voice and can’t manage to fry past chest voice 🙄🥺
