    tbh There isn't enough interactivity to call it a "Social Robot" for today's standards, this is a toy 15 years too late. Usually an interactive robot for kids retails anywhere from $500 to $2000 or more. If they did have a legit social robot at $100 dollars it would've sold like hotcakes. Besides, their presentation and video demo looked like something they put together the day before the pitch. Maybe its the edit ,but we didn't get to see any "social and emotional learning" , it was just some kids flinging the doll around n talking to their parents on the phone, then cleaning their room. 😂

    I work in the childcare industry (work in a daycare and studying to become a teacher) and I also have a bachelor's in psychology. I agree that the toy industry must be super competitive, everyone wants to put a screen in a child's face but no one wants to talk about the consequences. Children DON'T NEED instant gratification. What they DO need is to play outside, learn to be patient, and play with games that are traditional. Building blocks have been around for so long yet they are still one of the best toys for kids. Anything that relies on batteries and such is usually garbage.

    The guys mentioned that three million people have seen their ads. Great. But they've also only sold 2,500 units. That's one person for every 1,200 that have seen their ad(s). That's like a baseball stadium at full capacity of 50,000 selling 42 hot dogs. Not an impressive conversion.

    • @Wector9531
      @Wector9531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      1/1200 for a product that costs $100 is actually reasonably good ratio, and they said it themselves, they have margin of profit after including advertising costs.
      the comparison doesent make much sense cause a hot dog is like $3 and its not a tv add, they are already at the stadium

      Awful example. If you're in a baseball stadium during the game you can't leave and if you're hungry you don't have a lot of options. A whole different thing is the open world where you need to get noticed and its very difficult to get someone to buy something out of nothing.

    The sharks called it right the first time - this toy is a bad investment. From what I can see, there isn’t any real “interactivity” between the toy and the user. The toy just has prerecorded things that it can play that can be controlled remotely via smartphone.
    That completely defeats the purpose of the toy. Parents give their children tablets because the child can stay entertained by interacting with the tablet without parental intervention - so the parent is free to get other things done. If the parent has to issue remote commands, they’re still entertaining the kid.
    This toy SHOULD have been designed with an interactive VUI that allows the *kid* to speak commands and an AI that can understand, respond and learn the kid’s preferences so it can make intelligent suggestions for stories and songs during playtime (i.e., If the parents say “Hey Kodi, it’s bedtime” the toy would respond “It’s bedtime. Would you like me to read a bedtime story?). Even better if the toy also answered questions (i.e., Hey Kodi, how many stars are in the sky?)
    Kids already do this with Alexa and would probably be disappointed with Kodi’s limited functionality. Plus, as the sharks mentioned, Amazon already has years of AI and VUI development behind them, so if making it “cute” is the only barrier to entering the market, Amazon will quickly hurdle that before this company can even get funding.
    I noticed that this guy talked about his “background in tech” and “degree from Stanford” but was pretty vague about what that specifically means (he didn’t even say what he studied.) I wonder if he’s *actually* worked in tech or if he’s only participated through school and doesn’t have any practical experience. Unfortunately, I’m tech, there is never a shortage of recent grads with impressive degrees, but limited boots on the ground experience. They come up with these “innovative” products, but when the rubber hits the road, it’s clear they don’t really know what’s going on.

  • @bjvu9460

    all that happened is that robert is investing in the team to get traction and then quickly start looking for acquisition ... now, what they should have done is go talk with a kids program creator to build a story around this and put it on youtube and have the toy as a catalyst to the program where if you had the toy it could give challenges and become interactive to the learning program the kids are watching... now , that would help with selling more toys and allow for the kids to interact with the toy in a different way

If they need more social interactions, then why not investing on improving the social and emotional skills of parents, teachers and children themselves, instead of hoping that a robot teaches them how to socialize?
