  • Hi, I'm Lamar, your driving instructor.
    In this video, we'll show you which car should PASS the intersection FIRST when driving in the USA. We'll cover everything you need to know about US road rules, including the rules for passing intersections.
    Don't make the mistake of driving the wrong way in intersections - learn the rules and follow them to the letter in this video, and you'll pass your driving test with flying colors!
    Our channel focuses on educating viewers about road rules and signs. We provide various resources such as practice tests, road tests, interactive driving tests, diagnostic tests, and information about traffic lights and yielding.
    Our lessons cover a range of traffic situations involving both cars and pedestrians, all in accordance with the Laws and Rules of the Road and specific state driver handbooks. Whether you're a new or experienced driver, our videos serve as valuable tools for obtaining a license and gaining a comprehensive understanding of road regulations.
    All our tests are based on information from the official driver's manual.

    Don’t really understand how people could get this wrong, Main road and a side road, side road users always give way to main road users

      So, people make the mistake of thinking that this intersection is equivalent. And they are guided by the rule of the right hand, do you know about this rule?

  • @afaintdream3068
    @afaintdream3068 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Right-hand rule would state green goes first...
    However, assuming safety, and that the yellow car is already in motion to pass through the intersection (so unable to brake prior to entering the intersection ー as people don't seem to stop at uncontrolled intersections), it would be safer for the green car to give right-of-way to the yellow car (as green already has to slow down to ensure safety and make the turn).
    If we were to mention developing hazards, both cars would see this coming, though it would be more obvious for the green car (since there is no path going straight for them, so green would already have to look both ways, while yellow would primarily be focused on the path ahead), so it would be safer for the green car to yield to any other traffic coming in at the same time.
    Technically, driveways joined onto a main road could be viewed in a similar manner, so using that as a comparison would state green yields to yellow.
    What cases determine when the rule for giving right-of-way to the one on your right is ignored? (how much by regulations / rules, etc., I honestly haven't read about a case like this when reading my Driver's Manual)
    _Actually, why is the side road uncontrolled (or any of them)?_
    -Assuming so many get this wrong, how does this generally play out in practice, and how would it differ by region? (e.g. America vs a more strict country, like Japan)-
    _okay, I'm thinking way too much about this_

      I've driven for about..I want to say 6.5yrs?
      Admittedly, I still consider myself a newbie since I do make the same kinds of mistakes a newbie would make (e.g. misjudging yellow/amber lights; I would honestly probably brake late from misjudging the situation here as I have once before in an uncontrolled + intersection at a parking lot*, something I need to correct for the future), but I do try to drive as safely as I can.
      To my knowledge, developing hazards is something the US (where I have my license from) does not mention, but is something stricter countries do test you on, so I took a bit of time to look into it to see what I can learn, and it has become something I look out for now after practicing for a few months.
      *It was at a corner, and I noticed no controls on this intersection. I was at the corner of a building (at right), about to cross at ~14mph, but kept an eye out in case there was a car approaching from right ー and there was, so I immediately hit the brakes pretty hard, and so did they. After a small bit of back-and-forth attempting to give right-of-way, they crossed first (they were turning right), then I continued straight.
      (If I had to guess, I probably had right-of-way with regards to safety, but they would have right-of-way with the right-of-way rule, so this is another tricky situation.)
      I think the big takeaway from this, at least for me, is that I need to be more aware of spotting these uncontrolled intersections, and slow down a lot more so I have more time to collect information about how to approach it (especially if there is someone else present).
      The Driver's Manual will have to wait for another day, as my local BMV office is closed today.
      Thank you for the thought experiment, I'll be sure to implement my reflections into my future driving
      Edit: another commenter mentioned the main road was a one-way road, so why was green attempting an illegal and unsafe left turn?
      Edit2: this just happened 2d later in a parking lot, I hard-braked since the other car ('green') kept going forward (they didn't actually stop) even though I had right-of-way. Good thing this video gave me the chance to think about it some more, thanks once again

      @@LamarsDrivingInstructor Did you get his comment wrong or where you just overruling his feedback on GERMAN traffic code with American regulations?
      Because I am a German driving instructor and he is totally right in his comment. In Germany, absence from controlling elements, such as signs or traffic lights, will result in a situation of priority to right. And it doesn't matter if in town at 25mph, or outside at 70mph. Yes, it does make no real sense at high speeds, but the regulation is there, just normally there actually are signs out of town. Priority to right regulations are here usually only used for low speed traffic areas.
      The road markings you are referring to in your picture would have no meaning in Germany, they do not regulate the right of way here. Only signs, traffic lights or police officers have the authority to regulate traffic and who's got right of way. If none of particularly those elements are present, it's priority to right.
      If that works different in the United States, it's good to know, because at some point, I'll be staying there for quite a while. Following this rule shouldn't be hard, because it should be a matter of common sense. Even in Germany, entering a big and fast road from a small road, I wouldn't just race in there because of some arbitrary regulation, I would wait for fast traffic to go by and enter, when it's safely possible. However, no person with a clear mind would leave such a crossing in Germany without a sign. Too dangerous. And generally, German authorities love their signs, we got way too many of them.

    Americans and their dumb rules. Here, in western Europe, you wouldn't have an uncontrolled intersection if the 2 roads have significant differences such as size and/or speed. If the road the yellow car's driving on is bigger with a higher speed limit, it is almost guaranteed he'd be on a 'priority road', which would be indicated with signs. Any side roads would then either have stop signs/lines or yield signs/lines. If it's a residential area inside a town or city where the speed limit is the same for both and the roads are similarly sized, without any signage, then there's a right of way rule for people coming from the right. You don't have to stop, you do have to yield to anyone coming from your right. (Or if you're turning left, obviously, to those coming from ahead.)
    (I do not speak for the UK, tho from many dashcam videos and driving lesson videos, I have the idea they don't have intersections without any signage or lines, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

      Europeans and their dumb critical thinking skills. Sometimes signs are knocked down or stolen. In those cases drivers need to know what to do.

    • @LamarsDrivingInstructor
      @LamarsDrivingInstructor  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Usually, there are priority signs almost everywhere, but there are exceptions. Therefore, every driver should be prepared for the fact that for some reason there will be no signs at the intersection. And they should know what they need to do in a given situation. Am I speaking correctly?
