    To arrive at the radius of the arch with simple math, multiply the square of the height by 4. Add that to the square of the span and divide by the result of multiplying the height by 8.

    Good tutorial and easy to follow calcs , it looks fine ,to many people on these sites are critical without offering sensible input, at the end of the day masons are abit like chefs, 10 may bake a cake with all the same ingredients but maybe put it all together in a slightly different manner but done properly it’s the same outcome
    Well done mate for taking the time to make this lesson and if I was a novice I think I would be able to build a half tidy arch using this tutorial

    Love your vid ...1 extra point is to make sure of you rise height looks good in gauge ..Eg you dont want a 20 mm bed over the ring ...
    I am not critical ,just that we all trade tactics for all our better good ...

    yeah great videos ,been laying bricks for over 40 years and still pickup knowledge from watching stuff like this . with 80mm perps i would try n grind 5mm per brick and get an extra one in ,just looks a bit neater IMO , keep up the good work

      The best bricky learns every day! In my opinion anyway. I agree that a tighter joint would look nicer. i did try this off camera but it just didn't work out so i settled with the 80mm that you saw in the video. Thanks for the comment pal 👍

      Rodian Builds I totally agree with your comment on the best brickie never stops learning! I’m a Master Bricklayer and I’ve been laying for 35 years and I’m picking up handy tips. I must admit some not so good over the years lol. I’ve watched a few of your videos and I’ve noticed you always use stock bricks, which are very forgiving! I’d like to see you use a nice square brick 🧱

    Thank you so so much for this tutorial. You don't realise how many people you can reach with TH-cam. Well, I'm sure by now, you have a good idea, but it's really helpful for anyone who will do a search, because the powers of the internet will lead me to this video From the second I open my Browser! To put it into better context, let's say I don't know about your videos at all. Because you took the time to make this video and upload it into the connecting essence of TH-cam and the internet, I can get to see your AWESOME vids! haha YAY!
    Anyway, thanks I just wanted you to know how grateful I am for the time and effort you put recording, editing etc, just to show us how to do an arch. People will have no idea at all how it's done, but because of this vid you saved me the time and expense of learning all that in College! Thanks again Rodian. You rock! (no pun intended haha)

    Rodian, you ever heard of boneconductor head phones? they are blue tooth and sit just in front of your ears, on your cheek bones, they are great because you can hear what is around you, or the ambient noise, and you can hear your music, not have to take the ear plug out to hear others, or to talk. they are great. especially on construction jobs and also, when demoing or cutting, you can put in ear plugs and really tune out the loud noise and save your ears for old age.

I have only built arches on one job, in a refractory job, was fun. I would love to figure them cuts out, that and finding bond and figuring box cuts and bond cuts is so fun. But laying brick is funnest.

    Great video I went too college but it was very basic not sure they taught us arches. I’ve now been on a firm for 14 years and get sent off doing the jobs from start to finish brickwork wise but all though most jobs you don’t need too build arches I’d love too know all the methods behind it. I’ve built Arches over the years but not actually done all the behind the scenes work. Where did you learn it all mate and what can I do to have more knowledge I’ve got the nash books but unless you understand the geometry it’s a bit confusing.
    After watching this though it will help me understand next time I have a read.
    Any advice would be helpful

    Are there any specific rules about fireplaces in the building codes ? I'm surprised you can still put the gas and dp membranes in the back as I'd have thought they'd melt with a decent fire going. And maybe special refractory bricks? Just spouting ideas. I don't know myself.

  • @actimasprime6226

    Cool bud. . Do you think it’s good to remove the plywood while the mortar is a little wet ? Is that normal practice? . Also if it is a prominent arch it looks good to change the brick color for the keystone or let the key stone protrude out a bit. Best of all put a real stone in . Thanks

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rodian I watched your arch build out of interest and I noticed something you did not do,which would have made dropping the centre much easier.That is when you put the props in to hold up the centre,put in a couple fox wedges under each prop. When the arch is built take out the braces (arch is quit safe) and then ease out the wedges slightly ,this allows the arch to bed in ,makes a better job .Plus when the centre is taken out you won't be struggling. Great stuff but I'm curious as to how does the plaster or dry lining work 10 or 20 mill of plaster on the block work leaves your brickwork set back you can always get a grinder and cut some 20 mill piece half bricks and put the turning piece back in and stick your cuts on with tile adesive.why Are you building a fireplace and chimney stack in a new built the only thing you can put in is a log burner but I have built fireplaces and chimneys in new builds in 3 million pound +houses in thames valley but I wasent sure what the house buyers would burn in them. you need the brick chimney brest and arch to be the main feature in the room and take it up to the ceeling height the whole thing it would look great.good luck

    SKEWBACK ! Rise is always 1/12 span , top of arch centre should be gauged to prevent awkward cut over arch , alway have an odd number or you don't get a keybrick , you only have a joint on a pointed arch

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers for the comment buddy! I never knew the rise was 1/12 the span......and it makes sense to gague it to prevent that awkward cut. 😁👍🏻

      Hi buddy 👋, I have to do an arch tomorrow as I read your comment you said the arch rise is about 1/12 the span , mine is about 113 cm the distance of opening that means 9.41 cm the top rise of my arch? Do you think it's so low any not have any aesthetic look?

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing you can do is draw out the arch on a piece of wood as if you were making the turning piece. If it looks too small then raise the rise but make sure you raise it following gague like @eddieharding said. You dont want to end up with an odd cut brick above your key stone. Let me know how you get on buddy

    • @eddieharding5961
      @eddieharding5961 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saifhallem1275 Traditionally the span of a segmental arch was measured in feet and the rise would be the same in inches . If you remember back to your college days the arch you built there had a span of 900mm and a rise of 75mm . All segmental arches are built to these proportions , or they are not segmental . Google it if want , buy be a pint if I am right.

    Could of been really flash and done a gothic or twisted arch

      I was tempted with a gothic arch but didn't think it would fit in with the farmhouse feel I'm going for. Twisted arch would look insane!!!! Maybe I'll do that in the next one 🤣🤣

    16 × 5 is 80mm.... could have added another brick to close the perps 5mm perhaps?

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried adding another brick before I filmed me doing it. It just wouldnt fit right. I would have needed to trim most of the bricks by a couple of mm. The bricks I was using were such odd sizes that it made it very awkward. I was happy enough with the outcome.

      Charly Smith just watched this and was about to say the exact same thing 😂 would’ve left you with one key and could’ve just cut that to suit if needed.

    Or.... An easier way if your shite at this stuff is to get ply and extend until your happy as all arches arent circular

    • @paulmurphy9929
      @paulmurphy9929 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean cut some 4" ply about 3-9 inches longer than than the gap than see if your happy extend or reduce ten trace

      I used to work with a dislecsic guy and he would do it by eye and judge each side for the keystone by eye I've never forgotten it and it works you need no math 😊

      Everyone works in different ways, if that worked for him then good on him. I've seen someone using an old truck tyre to build an arch 🤣
