1st Woman To Ride A 125cc Honda Mini-Motorcycle Solo Across Europe

  • My story of riding a motorbike across 15 European countries began in Bali, Indonesia, where I learned to ride a scooter and asked my heart, "Where to next?" The following morning, I had a dream in which I had seen myself riding a motorbike through the mountains towards the sun, hearing the words, “Make it to Lisbon,” just before I awoke.
Two months later, I arrived in France, bought a used Honda Innova (aka Honda Wave 125cc) in Cannes, named it “Joy,” learned how to ride it, and set out for Portugal. Along the way, I followed Google Maps and the courage of my heart.
Joy broke down in Spain, 9km/5.5miles from Portugal in the middle of nowhere, forcing me to push her 12km/7.5miles, until an old man and young woman, from little Spanish border town, offered to tow me to mechanic via a bungee-cord and chain. In Portugal, I was professionally towed to Motodiana Honda in Evora, a city classified as a historic UNESCO World Heritage site reminiscent of a fairytale. Once “Joy” was miraculously brought back to life like Frankenstein, I set out for Lisbon. Afterward, I made my way back through Portugal (down to Moto Clube Faro), then across Spain and France. Inspired to ride on, I made my way northeast to Switzerland, destination Zurich (to meet up with my amazing friend who I met in Bali), then northeast up Germany, Bavaria, across to Vienna, Austria, south to Hungary, Slovenia, touching into Triste, Italy before going down through Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, and then back up to Italy; battling virulent winds, torrential rain, light snow, burning hot to ice-cold temperatures, countryside dirt roads to old cobblestone castle pathways. After two months, two weeks, and two days, I returned to Monte-Caro, Monaco.
Along my journey, I learned that in being connected to our hearts, we become connected to everyone, each country and culture, person, and place linked through an infinite succession of shared heartbeats and moments, all made magic by the willingness and openness to live in love and find joy no matter the matter.
I am honored to be the 1st woman to ride (7,580 Miles, 12,200 Kilometers) on a 125cc mini-motorcycle through 15 European countries.

Paul McGowan here again I've re-watched your you tube over and over every now and then...I have been to where you went on your scooter trip and wondered if you would tell me the actual route you took please...
Your a riot to watch in the nicest way....I ride all over Canada and United States but so far I've toured most of Europe....🎉

Dear Paul, Thank you for your words-I am so delighted you’ve been inspired (and find me a riot in the nicest ways). I was riding a 125cc Honda Innova/Wave, and although smaller than most scooters, it is considered a mini-motorcycle (due to the under-bone frame). Because of its lightweight body and the fact that it didn’t go over 120km/74.5mph downhill and maxed out at 115km/71.4mph going straight, I set Trip Preferences in Google Maps to avoid motorways and tolls (one usually equals the other in Europe), which meant I explored 15 countries in Europe by riding on national and back roads for 12,000km/7,500miles. Note: National roads are mostly two-lanes, reminiscent of the original Route 66.
My route: Monte-Carlo, Monaco to Cannes Sur Mer, to Aix-en-Provence to St Remy de Provence, to Les Beaux Des Provence to Beziers, France, through the Pyrenees Mountains to Barcelona, Valencia, Cordoba, and Seville, Spain (I pushed my motorbike to Portugal and was towed to Evora). Once brought back to life, I rode to Lisbon, back Evora to Faro (specifically Moto Clube Faro) back again to Evora, then to Seville, Granada, Valencia to Barcelona, Spain, then to Aniane, through the central mountains of France to Marigny, then onto Zurich, Switzerland, Munich, Germany (so gloriously green) to Vienna, Austria (riding along to Danube River was beautiful), down through Hungary to Ptuj, Slovenia to Trieste, Italy, to Opatija, (through Plitvička Jezera) to Sinj, to Dubrovnik, Croatia, down through Bosnia Herzegovina, along Bay of Kotor, to Bar, Montenegro, across to Tirana, Albania, to Edessa, to Nea Kavali (for the Honda Goldwing Treffen), to Athens, Delphi, Patras, Igoumenitsa, Greece. I took a ferry to Bari, then rode down to Matera, over to Capaccio, up along the Amalfi Coast, Ravello, Massa Lubrense, to Sorrento, Pompeii, Naples, Rome, Orvieto, Florence, Viareggio, up through Cinque Terre, Genoa, Italy, back to Monte-Carlo, Monaco and then sold my motorbike to my friend near Cannes, France. Et voilà, my route in a nutshell. I just finished writing a book about the journey and the courage it takes to follow our hearts (I will send it to agents for publishing this month; fingers crossed). I wish you wonderful two-wherl adventures wherever you find yourself.

Looks like an amazing journey!!! I'm sure that even the day you had to push your bike, that still beats the hell out of sitting in an office all day long! I'm planning my big trip starting in May of 2019 but I am in the US. I live in Texas, so I plan to go from Texas to Florida (Orlando, spending a week at DW), then up to the NY area, then across to Washington, then down to San Francisco and LA, then back home to Texas. It's about a 10,000 ride around the perimeter of the US. I hope my journey will be as much fun as yours and like you, I will be traveling alone. But I loved your video! God bless you and keep you safe!

Curious about your thoughts on Cyrus the Great: thought that would be an interesting video in relation influence of social & political structures which inspired Xenophon, student of Socrates, to write Cyropaedia whose stories about political virtues of Cyrus the Great & his organization of society (beyond but including what came to be known as Machiavellian subterfuge) continued to inspire political formation...could be poignant considering theses “new normal” times...

    • @seannamarie1021
      @seannamarie1021 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you Peter. I was an enthusiastic novice, so lack of ventilated helmet and little Honda seemed normal (before setting out across Europe and finding myself on Germany’s Autobahn or Italy autostrade where everyone speeds well past 100 mph & my motorbike could only reach 65 on an incline. On the little roads life was beautiful and in highways I felt like I was riding a feather, capable of being blown away into the ether any moment & so held on for dear life reciting mantra like prayers of, “Thank you for protecting me and everyone on the road,” in constant repetition or at least until my heart wasn’t racing like a wild stallion.
Journey across 15 countries in Europe was an everyday joy & challenge...I had only learned to ride a scooter a few months prior when visiting Bali (where my helmet didn’t even have a visor and required to be tied into place). Overall my love for riding & joy for exploration was greater than the fear & gave me strength, endurance and courage to ride on. Note: hair was always tied in a back bun ;-)

“Joy” (my name for motorbike) was a 125cc Honda Innova aka Wave...bike over 10 years old...went 120km max (downhill)...bike was great for all the non-motorways which are much more beautiful to ride on. On major motorways I found myself, she felt a bit lite and cc’s too weak to really do anything but ride slow, so as to ride safe.
The motorbike problem(s) had to do with a screw that dislodged from base of oil pan: The leak draining the oil & seizing the engine. Rebuilt at Honda Motodiana in Evora Portugal...but after they had to disengage the choke which months later in the cold mountains landscapes of Germany/Austria/Hungary/Slovenia/Croatia/Armenia/Greece/Italy made her hard to start in the morning (lots of perpetual kick-starting).
“Joy” now belongs to friend who bought her in France: both of us retired for the moment. 😉

Am on a vacation now but since I’ve got cricket I don’t get overseas signal and I don’t know how to drive one of those things yet.

Tina, Yes, it is great riding a motorbike long distance throughout Europe. Unlike all other long-distance riders, I was riding a small 125cc Honda Innova (best suited for getting around one area). I wasn’t licensed to ride a larger motorbike, so this was my best & only option. If your heart has the dream, it is possible!

You are right, but the bike is smaller than most scooters, so I share for perspective (even the Honda mechanics called it a scooter).

i work as a delivery in restaurants and i know very well your bike :-(( you have choose the most unreliable bike that honda ever made... the most common damage on this bike is on the connecting rod. i never had this bike. some people say that it needs a specific oil to function. they say it needs an oil with SAE 10W-30. i think that this is the mistake that many owners do=they use a different viscosity,on some bikes a different viscosity of engine oil doesnt have an immediate bad effect but on this bike...it destroys the connecting rod very quickly.you should also be carefull to add oil regularly,it is normal for small capacity engines to burn oil.

Crossing four countries in less than 4 minutes of video footage isn't showing much of the actual trip. And then one minute you're in Spain and the next you're in Zurich. 😮 I think you're a brave girl. But your riding is better than your vlogging.
