BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality. The actor that played the black cop said his performance was because a friend of his son was killed in the street and Singleton wanted that anger in the performance.

Lawrence Fishburne : Something wrong? Yea. Its just too bad you don’t know what it is….brother. Classic line and classic response to the cop. That left him speechless. One of the best scenes in the movie
Interestingly "What it is" was an informal greeting between black people in the 70's. So this cop would have been a teenager at that time and would likely have used it.
Furious saying "what it is" in such a deliberate manner gets his point across in a very direct way.
Basically you've forgotten what skin you're in.

The saxophone score in this movie is phenomenal.
Stanley Clarke's score really helped make this movie, and it's one of my favorite film and TV scores. He also did phenomenal work on Higher Education.

Since Furious served in the army, he's been trained to sense danger. Gotta love that detail when he suddenly senses it and jumps right into action.
He was in Nam on a swiftboat.
Brother was in Nam. Probably survived more than a couple of firefights and ambushes.
And if he was in the army and couldn't get the guy, imagine how useless the average gun owner is in that situation.

Furious should have saved his money while in the Army and then he could have moved away from the dangerous neighborhood they were in. He should have taken advantage of the Mess Hall for all meals. Stayed on Base and studied in the Library when off duty. You can save alot when you have free rent, food and medical. When he got out a distance of 80-100 miles away form his crap for neighborhood would have benefited Trey.

Watching these scenes and being a grown man i really appreciate the accuracy of each character.
Something underrated is his face and panting at 1:15 His fear and anxiety are something he's not afraid to admit or show. He's also no doubt worried for his son. That kind of vulnerability is lacking in movies today.

Such a good movie. Every performance is outstanding.
Laurence acting skills is one of the best. The disappointments in his face 3:25 sends a lot of messages without saying anything.

Something I never noticed before in the movie *Boyz In Tha Hood* and not only did I see the movie the first night it opened in theaters, but I watched it hundreds of times on television. But how come Furious Styles allowed Trey to play around with the *Crack Head* cat head shoe? That’s nasty lol 😂

Although I can't relate to their circumstances, the character of Furious taught me a lot as a teenager about being a man.
Great writing makes a specific story universal. My circumstances were different too (grew up in Ireland) but Boyz n da Hood is one of the most resonant coming of age stories I've ever watched!

Depending on your life experience, this scene definitely has different interpretations.

To lower his street cred for no reason and setup his son's homies as future marks....Or, in order to get his door repaired for insurance purposes, which he personally sold; he needed a police report for legal filing reasons.
