Dana, YOU ROCK! My husband changed out the ignition housing about a month ago and we have not had the problem since. At first I was concerned because when he went to change it, it was already in 'Anti-theft' mode. We never had the problem of the car stalling while driving but it wouldn't start when it decided to act up. We really appreciate your video. I went to the junkyard today to try to get a ignition switch. I couldn’t pull the whole harness out like that the other cable wouldn’t release I think its the one u mentioned controls the shifter. How did you get that off?

Hi Dana. I have the same Malibu. I am trying to change my ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder all together. How would you recommend to get the switch disconnected from the cable for the shifter when the ignition is locked in the off position can’t can’t turn to the on position. I have everything disconnected except the cable for the shifter currently.

How do you get the gear shifter cable out? How do you get the anti theft wire harness out, I squeeze the tabs together and it won't come out. Also how did you get the housing out? I had to break a piece to get it out.

Ive replaced my ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch . Lock cylinder came with a new set of keys and when my mechanic installed the new parts . The key is stuck and doesn’t not release. But when the ignition cylinder is out the key removes fine . What could be the issue?

@@DanaCrosby OK, Thanks, Well It was disconnected at the Shifter, So I guess That's the same as being In neutral. IDK, But It came Out, and I read where you have to turn the key On, but my key was stuck, But we got the switch out, and turned the New Key on, and clipped the cable in the new switch. There is a release on the Interlock cable at the back of the switch too.
Hi. My key won’t turn either and is stuck in the off position. I can’t get the shifter interlock cable removed from the back of the switch. Car is in park no movement at all in gear shift to get it to neutral. Any recommendations?
Hey Dana, my husband is trying to change the ignition switch on our 02 Malibu. The problem that we are running into is having enough slack to get to the shifter cable to unhook it. There is a zip tie that looks like it's holding the other other 2 cables for plug wires back. If we cut the zip tie, will it give us enough slack on the shifter cable to be able to pull the old ignition switch out more. As it is now there is no room (short shifter cable) to work on it. How did you get so much slack to work on yours? Was there a large zip tie that you had to cut? Also, we need to move car out of garage. When you disconnected the shifter cable can we put the car in neutral to be able to push it out of garage? Any help would be appreciated.

All you have to do is disconnect the two small wires on the top of the switch. Yes. The Theft light will stay on all the time. Who cares? I've been driving a Taurus with the brake light on for 4 years. Nothing is wrong with the brakes. Just a bad brake fluid level sensor. And it's paranoid to think that anyone would steal a 2002 Malibu!! LOL. You can pick one up with less than 100,000 K miles for less than $2000.00.

Thanks for this video. I just got through with the remedy of cutting the yellow wire and will put a toggle switch in soon. 1997 Chevy Cavalier. Local dealer wouldn't even work on it! In any case, after cutting the yellow wire, shut the car down, started again without problem. Switched off, started again several times. My question is, if that works, why did you replace the whole housing module?

Same reason as yours: just needed a cheap car for my 130lb Labrador&I. Rear seats are his kennel! Hey I don't have to sit back there. Anyways, neighbors must of had the same problem. I found the GM car manual they had in the glove box. The pages on resetting anti-theft were marked. I got it and soon it began having starting issues. I put a switch inside the car that jumped the contacts on the starter. Hey it worked! Well sort of. Helped a couple of weeks until I had to have it towed home. Rather embarassing at times. One day it started and varoom, drove it straight to the GM Specialist (1hr away) without shutting it off. About $400 later, they said a part of the ignition switch was bad and they had it fixed. Nevermind that now I have no dash lights at night. It's a nothing special car. Fast forward 3 months, and out of Mexico City thank God. It once again has the same ignition problem. Thanks for the video. I'm gonna try to fix it myself. Hey my Black Lab needs his ride wagon! Anyone reading this: Don't buy one of these. 160k miles and its drawing near the junk yard. Hi Brian! THANK YOU for the comment ! Now the starter is shot and after you shut it down you have to wait two hrs and will start and run fine till you shut it down again. I suspect the coil.
Yep that figures. Crappy car. I bought my used Malibu after a 2000 Honda CRV died that I owned. That Honda went 335,000 miles. Other than some CV axles and tune ups, I did nothing to my Honda. Just gas and go. I guess if ones a good enough mechanic, you MAYBE can keep a Chevy Malibu running. I'm no mechanic. Mine will soon be at Pick&Pull. Thanks again for the video. It fixed my car. Hi David! Thank you for Commenting . I cut the yellow wire for troubleshooting. By putting a switch there so I could manually turn the anti theft system on and off. but I removed the switch in the end.
hello I am going through this exact problem with my 2000 malibu, my question is how did you get the entire assembly out of dash, i need to replace the lock cylinder but I can not remove the cylinder because the key wont turn period. Any suggestions??
My girlfriend has the same car and the other night we went out and when she turned her car off it made a clicking noise from the locks and the dash wouldn't light up. Hi Chavezf2012 Chavez! Thank you my friens for the comment! I believe your asking how to get the check engine light to go out. It should go out after between 50 and 300 miles of diving if not you will have to get a scanner to clear it. most of the popular car parts store should clear it for you.
did your car have no dash lights when you had it in the on position ,mine has no dash lights and no communication with the pcm when hooked to a scanner
@@shaywilliams1392 yes I figured out the issue.so happens that there is a recall on the ignitions switch since my security light had been flashing before it broke down i tried to get the issue rectified with the chevy house but they are only out to over charge so when I heard about the ignition switch being the reason for the recall I went to the junk yard and took another from the same year model and installed the new one. it fired right up on the 1st key stroke..
@@shaywilliams1392 naw man the old one worked fine but I went ahead and bought a new one from Oreilly auto with my first call discount. And installed it so i wouldnt have any issues in the foreseeable future and it all works well

I have the same situation and problem, and after buying a brand new entire ignition switch assembly with key it still will not crank or start... I am trying to reset the password code by leaving it on until the theft system indication light goes out but it will not go out even after being on for 30 minutes, so I don't know what my next step should be... The ignition switch assembly is the only thing I have bought other than a brand new battery... Can you help me?
Hi Scott! Thank you for the comment ! The switch should not keep it from cranking It should crank no matter what ,unless the starter is bad. go after the starter. Do you get a clicking sound when you turn the Key?
@@DanaCrosby Towed home, checked all fuses, disconnected battery, hooked up still the same thing. Friday morning went out turned ignition on and no lights, decided to do as previous day and let car sit with ignition. Boom 5 minutes go by and I look in at dash and the lights come on, turn key and starts like a champ. Put a tester on and it came up with replace ignition cylinder. Debating to buy new ignition or not. Thanks for the reply
GM claims that if you have too much weight viz...keys etc...hanging from your ignition switch while driving it can shut off the engine & that's their reason for the recall. That is a load of "HORSE SHIT"! The ignition switch is built by AC Delco with faulty designed internal (electrical) contacts & has cost me 2 replacements over $400! The electrical contacts that supply current to the Ignition/fuel system"fail open" & power is lost killing the engine. You may find sometimes the car may start sometimes & other times no go...an intermittent problem until total failure! As an auto mechanic each time it failed I tested the switch contacts with a VOM multi- meter & sure enough the contacts in the switch failed in "run" key position! Be warned the engine can quit while the car is underway which can be extremely dangerous especially if you are on a busy highway. DANGEROUS! GM recall & fix is all FAKE! GM knows that the problem is a poorly designed switch but rather than admitting to this fact they decided to cover it up with the excuse that people were hanging too much weight (keys etc...) on the ignition switch (key ring) causing the engine to shut off. Legally...GM should have recalled 1999 & on Malibus & replaced all the ignition switches (modules) to reduce the danger of failure while driving but it would have cost GM millions $$$! In Canada a switch cost over $200!!! IT'S ALL ABOUT $$$$ WITH THESE CAR COMPANIES! If you must own a car, reduce your risk...don't ever buy a GM! For the Anti Theft System problem? You can modify the system according to GM UI Bulletin #26. Although this modification says MODELS AFFECTED: S/T,C/K, M/L & G Trucks, it works for all Malibus. It allows you to "enable or disable" the passlock/anti theft system using an installed switch located in a "discreet" location. Basically you are switching "On" or "OFF" the Anti Theft system with this switch mod. In the switch "OFF" position the telltale "Anti Theft" icon will remain illuminated on the instrument panel while driving. You can purchase the switch from Home Depot or any electrical store. If you are not comfortable in accomplishing this mod. have someone else more confident do it. Take your time & follow the instructions carefully. It works great! Sorry no experience there ,But Now it will be out there for other viewers who have done it ! get the manual and follow the Ignition wiring of the starter to put on a push button and put the key switch wiring IGNITION except the aux wiring on toggle (non hold) /Kill switch or just use the key switch. But if you crash the kill switch is easier to get to and may be required in race rules. Yay,,,I think I am having the same problem with a Chevy Malibu 2003...Sometimes I get a hard start, intermittent shut downs, and current loss thru the dash lights.. Stupid Chevrolet knew about this defect and it's a safety issue if you are cruising down the highway and engine shuts off...

A lot of $ was put into this 2003 Chevy Malibu where I get intermittent stalls, sometimes no start issues, and getting pulsating dim lights..I can see the ignition switch also works with the shift cable on the Chevy Malibu's so I'm thinking maybe wen I put in reverse it cuts out sometimes.. Only way is probably to take out the ignition switch first and look at the wiring harness.,This vehicle has new battery, Starter, ignition modules, and spark plugs with wires.. :)
I have a thick cable inserted in the back of mines. i got all the colorful wires out just not the one that goes into the back of it. will that needle inside the ignition switch release it if i push it? ?
@@iggycruz212 Saw on another video that there is 2 different release spots you need to push for 2 different things. The one he shows here is to release the cylinder from the black housing. The 2nd place to release is on the back end of the entire unit right next to the 2 electrical connectors where the transmission safety cable plugs in. Check this video to see better the cable disconnect. Roughly 9:00 minute mark....turn key position to run 1st, then push in with screwdriver in what looks like empty electrical connector but is actually a release push. th-cam.com/video/OIXmd8SCGzI/w-d-xo.html *****But.....before you do anything shown in either of these 2 videos check out how the pros do this.....they dont remove radio or gauge clusters or disconnect any wires....they just change the cylinder which apparently is where the sensor is that starts to fail.....The flat plastic strip on the one side of the cylinder is the sensor....all the rest of the housing is just for wiring hookups and the plastic cam wheel and support to hold the cylinder in place. The pro video listed below shows the cylinder out of the housing with the push tab disconnection but I tried to find it the way they show without being able to see the entire housing unit and its tough to find the release. How do you get the gear shifter cable out? How do you get the anti theft wire harness out, I squeeze the tabs together and it won't come out. Also how did you get the housing out? I had to break a piece to get it out.

Ive replaced my ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch . Lock cylinder came with a new set of keys and when my mechanic installed the new parts . The key is stuck and doesn’t not release. But when the ignition cylinder is out the key removes fine . What could be the issue?

The shifter has to be in N. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PARKING BRAKE SET and WHEELS CHOCKED.

IDK, But It came Out, and I read where you have to turn the key On, but my key was stuck, But we got the switch out, and turned the New Key on, and clipped the cable in the new switch. Hey Dana, my husband is trying to change the ignition switch on our 02 Malibu. The problem that we are running into is having enough slack to get to the shifter cable to unhook it. There is a zip tie that looks like it's holding the other other 2 cables for plug wires back. If we cut the zip tie, will it give us enough slack on the shifter cable to be able to pull the old ignition switch out more. As it is now there is no room (short shifter cable) to work on it. How did you get so much slack to work on yours? Was there a large zip tie that you had to cut? Also, we need to move car out of garage. When you disconnected the shifter cable can we put the car in neutral to be able to push it out of garage? Any help would be appreciated.

All you have to do is disconnect the two small wires on the top of the switch. Yes. The Theft light will stay on all the time. Who cares? I've been driving a Taurus with the brake light on for 4 years. Nothing is wrong with the brakes. Just a bad brake fluid level sensor. And it's paranoid to think that anyone would steal a 2002 Malibu!! LOL. You can pick one up with less than 100,000 K miles for less than $2000.00.

Thanks for this video. I just got through with the remedy of cutting the yellow wire and will put a toggle switch in soon. 1997 Chevy Cavalier. Local dealer wouldn't even work on it! In any case, after cutting the yellow wire, shut the car down, started again without problem. Switched off, started again several times. My question is, if that works, why did you replace the whole housing module?

Anyways, neighbors must of had the same problem. I found the GM car manual they had in the glove box. The pages on resetting anti-theft were marked. I got it and soon it began having starting issues. I put a switch inside the car that jumped the contacts on the starter. Hey it worked! Well sort of. Helped a couple of weeks until I had to have it towed home. Rather embarassing at times.
One day it started and varoom, drove it straight to the GM Specialist (1hr away) without shutting it off. About $400 later, they said a part of the ignition switch was bad and they had it fixed. Nevermind that now I have no dash lights at night. It's a nothing special car.
Fast forward 3 months, and out of Mexico City thank God. It once again has the same ignition problem. Thanks for the video. I'm gonna try to fix it myself. Hey my Black Lab needs his ride wagon!

Yep that figures. Crappy car. I bought my used Malibu after a 2000 Honda CRV died that I owned. That Honda went 335,000 miles. Other than some CV axles and tune ups, I did nothing to my Honda. My car has been to shop as it won't crank. Engine light sometimes would be on. Sometimes anti theft. Sometimes it would start. Spent $1300 on new motherboard and system calibration and removal of 2 codes. Just got home and wont crank. Think it's same issue?

My girlfriend has the same car and the other night we went out and when she turned her car off it made a clicking noise from the locks and the dash wouldn't light up. We tried starting it but it wouldn't do anything. After a bunch of tries, it started up. I was wondering did your car do that ever. She also says when she turns her air on, sometimes the cruise control light comes on then the air cuts off. Kind of weird. I wanna know what you think the problem is???

@@shaywilliams1392 yes I figured out the issue.so happens that there is a recall on the ignitions switch since my security light had been flashing before it broke down i tried to get the issue rectified with the chevy house but they are only out to over charge so when I heard about the ignition switch being the reason for the recall I went to the junk yard and took another from the same year model and installed the new one. it fired right up on the 1st key stroke..

I have the same situation and problem, and after buying a brand new entire ignition switch assembly with key it still will not crank or start... I am trying to reset the password code by leaving it on until the theft system indication light goes out but it will not go out even after being on for 30 minutes, so I don't know what my next step should be... The ignition switch assembly is the only thing I have bought other than a brand new battery... Can you help me?

Friday morning went out turned ignition on and no lights, decided to do as previous day and let car sit with ignition. Boom 5 minutes go by and I look in at dash and the lights come on, turn key and starts like a champ. Put a tester on and it came up with replace ignition cylinder. GM claims that if you have too much weight viz...keys etc...hanging from your ignition switch while driving it can shut off the engine & that's their reason for the recall. That is a load of "HORSE SHIT"! The ignition switch is built by AC Delco with faulty designed internal (electrical) contacts & has cost me 2 replacements over $400! The electrical contacts that supply current to the Ignition/fuel system"fail open" & power is lost killing the engine. You may find sometimes the car may start sometimes & other times no go...an intermittent problem until total failure!
As an auto mechanic each time it failed I tested the switch contacts with a VOM multi- meter & sure enough the contacts in the switch failed in "run" key position!
Be warned the engine can quit while the car is underway which can be extremely dangerous especially if you are on a busy highway. DANGEROUS!
GM recall & fix is all FAKE! GM knows that the problem is a poorly designed switch but rather than admitting to this fact they decided to cover it up with the excuse that people were hanging too much weight (keys etc...) on the ignition switch (key ring) causing the engine to shut off.
Legally...GM should have recalled 1999 & on Malibus & replaced all the ignition switches (modules) to reduce the danger of failure while driving but it would have cost GM millions $$$! In Canada a switch cost over $200!!!
IT'S ALL ABOUT $$$$ WITH THESE CAR COMPANIES!
If you must own a car, reduce your risk...don't ever buy a GM!
For the Anti Theft System problem? You can modify the system according to
GM UI Bulletin #26. Although this modification says MODELS AFFECTED: S/T,C/K, M/L & G Trucks, it works for all Malibus.
It allows you to "enable or disable" the passlock/anti theft system using an installed switch located in a "discreet" location.
Basically you are switching "On" or "OFF" the Anti Theft system with this switch mod. In the switch "OFF" position the telltale "Anti Theft" icon will remain illuminated on the instrument panel while driving. You can purchase the switch from Home Depot or any electrical store. If you are not comfortable in accomplishing this mod. have someone else more confident do it. Take your time & follow the instructions carefully. It works great!

Sorry no experience there ,But Now it will be out there for other viewers who have done it ! get the manual and follow the Ignition wiring of the starter to put on a push button and put the key switch wiring IGNITION except the aux wiring on toggle (non hold) /Kill switch or just use the key switch. But if you crash the kill switch is easier to get to and may be required in race rules. Yay,,,I think I am having the same problem with a Chevy Malibu 2003...Sometimes I get a hard start, intermittent shut downs, and current loss thru the dash lights.. Stupid Chevrolet knew about this defect and it's a safety issue if you are cruising down the highway and engine shuts off...

A lot of $ was put into this 2003 Chevy Malibu where I get intermittent stalls, sometimes no start issues, and getting pulsating dim lights..I can see the ignition switch also works with the shift cable on the Chevy Malibu's so I'm thinking maybe wen I put in reverse it cuts out sometimes.. Only way is probably to take out the ignition switch first and look at the wiring harness.,This vehicle has new battery, Starter, ignition modules, and spark plugs with wires.. :)

Saw on another video that there is 2 different release spots you need to push for 2 different things. The one he shows here is to release the cylinder from the black housing. The 2nd place to release is on the back end of the entire unit right next to the 2 electrical connectors where the transmission safety cable plugs in. Check this video to see better the cable disconnect. Roughly 9:00 minute mark....turn key position to run 1st, then push in with screwdriver in what looks like empty electrical connector but is actually a release push.

*****But.....before you do anything shown in either of these 2 videos check out how the pros do this.....they dont remove radio or gauge clusters or disconnect any wires....they just change the cylinder which apparently is where the sensor is that starts to fail.....The flat plastic strip on the one side of the cylinder is the sensor....all the rest of the housing is just for wiring hookups and the plastic cam wheel and support to hold the cylinder in place. The pro video listed below shows the cylinder out of the housing with the push tab disconnection but I tried to find it the way they show without being able to see the entire housing unit and its tough to find the release.
So, I kept looking and found this video with Dana that clearly shows where the push tab is on the entire housing compared to just the cylinder.
