The French seemed to have missed opportunities to offer hand grenades, as demonstrated in the example in 4.5.3, This is the only polite and proper way to request entrance without seeming uncouth and surly...

Yes that’s true - however in Game 1 the French had no reason to believe the German forces were already in the church - and so to some extent they “stumbled across the enemy”
