Justin and John take a look at a plastic Panzer IV kit for Bolt Action which allows you to make one of three versions of this famous tank.
This kit from Warlord Games allows you to build either the short-barrelled Ausf. F1, long-barrelled Ausf. F2/G which has a distinctive muzzle brake or the Ausf. H that includes protective schürzen side skirts.
    Which version will you build?

The detail on the turret schutzen and on the side panel looks better than on the rubicon equivalent, more realistic imo.Seems to be the deciding factor esp when washes are applied.
    great review, thanks

F2 had the L/42 gun, the later models (I think G and later) had the L/48 which was slightly longer with better muzzle velocity.

+Chaser McLoude Indeed, he made a suprising amount of mistakes on this episode, The ausf H was a early-mid 1943 (May I believe), not 1944-45 vehicle, it was also used prevalently during the Kursk offensive (again, early to mid 1943) The later model that was actually being built in 1944 to 1945 was the J, which didn't have stand-off extra armour on the front, as he discribed, there was no difference between ausf H and ausf J armour in general.

The PzKpfW IV ausf F2 and early ausf G models had the 7.5cm KWK 40 L/43 compared to the latter ausf G models through to the ausf J models which had the 7.5cm KWK 40 L/48. The biggest difference is that the L/48 had a different muzzle break and a slightly higher muzzle velocity which resulted in the L/48 being slightly more powerful and having slightly more penetration capabilities and at slightly longer ranges than the L/43.
I would agree with you about the Germans stopping at the Panzer IV. It was a superb tank, yes some could argue that the Sherman and the T-34 served all around purposes better, and they wouldn't be wrong, but still it could do it's job well and could easily take out any allied tank that the western Allies or the Soviets had. Like you I am pained to say that because who doesn't love the Tiger I? and the Panther was superb. However these tanks were very expensive and took a long time to make. The King Tiger, yes it was a beast and it could just face fuck anything that anyone else had, but it had so many problems with it, expenses and time to make being two major ones, and as any well versed WWII historian would know; Hitler's delaying the German offensive at Kursk time and time again, because he wanted more and more King Tigers, gave the Soviets so much time to dig in and fortify themselves. Which resulted in the Germans losing the largest tank battle in history when, if they had attacked when they were ready, like they wanted to, they probably could have defeated the Soviets at Kursk. So yes the King Tiger was a beast but I feel it did more harm to the Germans than good. (of course it wasn't in service long enough to rectify it's mistakes and get more combat experience and who knows, upgraded versions might have preformed well)

The Late G and H with its KWK40 L48 had slightly better performance and less recoil
