    'The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps'- a pretty ordinary cathedral xD also, the construction started around 1200.

    • @NukE30
      @NukE30 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. It's much newer, construction started in 1880. by Herman Bolle.

    • @paco9007
      @paco9007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NukE30 Not true, inform yourself, please. Construction on the cathedral started shortly after death of King Ladislav and was finished in 1217 and consecrated by king Andrew II of Hungary. The cathedral was severely damaged in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form

    • @NukE30
      @NukE30 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paco9007 I am well aware of that, but the "restoration" was almost a ground-up rebuild in a completely different style from the original.

    My wife is from Serbia, which all used to be part of Yugoslavia (so once was the same country as Croatia) so this is great as while they are different there are lots of similarities. Rakia (Rack-e-uh) is pretty savage sometimes. Dont make the mistake I made and drink a lot of other drinks and then drink Rakia. I literally remember nothing. My serbian friends all drink it in sips and if they are drinking that, they only drink Rakia (though you can have a shot or two and then drink beer and be fine :)
    The food portions in all the balkan countries seems to be pretty huge!

    Just spent 3 days in Zagreb and I can only say NEVER AGAIN!
    From the moment we set foot off the train we were engulfed in crowds of pushing, shoving, rude and obnoxious people!
    Our impression of Zagreb is one of grey dreariness. It is definately not on a par with either Ljubljana or Budapest and their Christmas market(s) does not even remotely compare with Innsbruck, Nürnberg, Salzburg nor Ljubljana, Trieste or Budapest.
    It seems everything on offer is copied from someone else. They hardly have a traditional cuisine. It is their version of hamburgers and hotdogs and little else.

      hongkongzorro, we're did you get that impression all "Slavs" are exactly the same... There is about 360 million of Slavic people around the globe, packed in large number of very different countries of different and distinctive heritage, history and unique culture in every single of them!
      Even small Croatia is very complicated mixture of regions with it's own cultural characteristics, people's mentality, traditions, food characteristics!
      And have you ever actually tasted different meals from various Croatian regions, esp. those from Istria and Dalmatia regions, but also central and easter parts of the country?!
      Many foreigners do regard many of these specialties as some of the the tastiest, most sophisticated in all of the world!
      Generalizations are ugly habit of lazy people my friend! Best regards!

      I'm not sure if you're actually bragging about this, supposedly "all slav" trait hence you're partly Slav, but still I don't think you can so easily put so many people in a same basket!
      And I don't even know what it means to drink a lot, like "all Slavs"?!
      Is it more, or less then, for instance, notorious English or Irish heavy drinking, ... ?!
      Please, don't be ignorant!

    Veal isn't pig, no. It's baby cow. I don't know about Croatia, but in England it's actually a waste product from the dairy industry. Cows don't last forever, so they've got to be replaced, but half the calves are male and you only need one bull for several dairy herds, so you get a lot of spare bullocks. Those becomes veal. In other places they're bred specially to make veal and there have been some campaigns against it, but here it's a dairy byproduct.
    Sounds like you found a distant relative of the Morrocan Tagine. We had good "chicken tagine" in a lot of places, but just once we got to make our own and do it *right* (and slowly).

    • @alexysq2660
      @alexysq2660 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      *Sableagle* ~It is actually one of [ if not THE ] *cruelest,* and *least* "humane", of ALL the 'methods' of "raising livestock" [ ...really, *baby* "livestock"... ] as/for "meat"; hence, the *many,* actually, "campaigns against it"!!!

    • @Sableagle
      @Sableagle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's done on purpose, yes, but in *Britain* nobody breeds cattle to produce veal. They breed cattle to produce *milk* and get a lot of unwanted male calves, which they immediately kill and then *try* to sell as veal. Nobody's breeding them to make veal here because they can't sell all the veal they're *accidentally* producing as part of the dairy business.

    • @alexysq2660
      @alexysq2660 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      **Sableagle* ~Well...that, too, is something that doesn't quite thrill me, tbh; although i do, of course, realise that *very* few people would be willing [ and able ] to care for, look-after, and raise, all of the 'excess' male calves who are born! Oh, and...i, too, am a Brit, btw ({: D ...!!

    Keep up the good work guys - very entertaining. :-)
    Cool, lived and worked in Croatia (mostly in Zagreb) about ten years ago - lovely place.
    If you have time, do Croatia's Adriatic coast drive... Pristine seaside coves with 1,250 islands off the coast, picturesque villages and towns.
    When I was there I was installing telecoms base stations around the more remoter parts of the country... There’s some amazing battle scared ghost towns dotted all over - quite spooky but very poignant.
    For instance, places like Dvigrad, Zavrsj, and Malo Grablje look like something from a Bohemian fairytale. Places like Kupari, Nakovana, and Daksa Island feel darker, and still show the scars of war.
    Also check out the Roman ruins at Pula.
    If you do any trekking inland, be careful and be on the lookout for brown bears, lynx, griffon vultures, and wolves. They’re actually quite prolific.
    There’s always too much to see... Maybe also do the Biokovo mountain range near Makarska.
    This’ll be a good itinerary (but include various diversions to do some exploring):
    * Zagreb
    * Buzet / Istra
    * Plitviče Lakes
    * Zadar
    * Krka National Park
    * Split
    * Brac
    * Makarska (Biokovo mountain range)
    * Dubrovnik
    There’s some touristy spots, which will be slowing down this time of year. However, there’s lots great places off the beaten track along the route.
    Also, the food can be amazing. Each part of Croatia has specific culinary regions:
    * Inland: Slavic, Hungarian, and Germanic inspired cuisine. The game, lamb, and boar dishes, usually prepared with wild mushrooms and truffles (they’re currently in season), will blow your mind. Especially the Peka stewed dishes, which you’ve already tried.
    * Costal: Mediterranean (Italian, Greek, and Turkish) inspired cuisine. The Adriatic fresh fish, shrimps, prawns, squid, cuttlefish, and octopus dishes are fantastic... I could eat the Brudet every day (similar to Bouillabaisse) but served with polenta. This might offend the Italians, but the black squid risottos and Adriatic pizzas I had along the northern coast where - well - damn good! Every day’s a pizza day - again! :-)
    The olive oils and truffles are the best in the world, especially around Istria. There’s fantastic places where you can go olive oil tasting. The Croatian cured hams almost rival Spanish jamón ibérico. Obviously there’s the wine tasting at a multitude of vineyards. It’s also truffle and mushroom season - you can hire guides to search for truffles and mushrooms (with the help of dogs, sometimes with the help of pigs), and then sample them in a meal later.
    There’s usually a truffle / food festival every weekend (Sept - Nov). Check out the website for dates.

    Art museums are overdone (to me). When I worked in London a visit (between meetings) to the galleries in Trafalgar Square showed me that a piece of art needs it own space with time to enjoy it with no distraction by other art and with some explanation. Crowding lots of paintings by the same artist into the same space was not good for me. I would have thought that the art curators would know this. Or is it about visitor throughput?

    I may be 2 years too late for this video but as a Croat I can give you an explanation on the cannon that shot at noon in Zagreb. City of Zagreb was surrounded by Ottomans somewhere in 16th century. They have marched upon the city of Sisak and they had their eyes set on Zagreb as well. The story goes that the cannon was brought from Vienna and it fired at noon during the Ottomans leaders lunch time. The Turks ran away as the cannon balls were hitting their camps and Croatian army defeated Turks at Sisak later on driving the Turks from the Croatian lands. You can say that the fall of the Ottoman rule in Croatia started as we start our noon in Zagreb, with a single shot of a cannon. xD

    I’m only 9 months behind real time (and there’s a little bit of me thinks I said this already in an earlier viewing) But veal is from a calf. Essentially it’s beef but has the appearance of pork on account of the fact veal is from calves fed only milk. Some have moral objections to veal. Or at least some of the practices around producing it. Me? I just don’t like it. But that glorious dish of food could certainly have changed that. Absolutely famished after seeing that. Just like I was the first time I watched this. Damn you magnificent travellers. Damn you to hell (not really)

    The thing looking like a donut is a zeppoli, it is a common food on the east coast of the US, and is available in Italian restaurants and pizzerias.
    I think its hilarious listening to the talk about the cobblestones. I am a rollerblader and I have purchased special soft wheels to deal with some tough terrain, like Budapest, or places in Queens, NY. But the irony? The square in front of the quaint church, is a historic area from the Middle Ages. It is the first area that had free-thought and autonomy in the region. There is an area (like 2 square feet in size), where a fictional hero had a red-hot metal crown put on his head to silence him for wanting the serfs to be free. So that fictional place is physically demarcated and is the inception point of the move toward an egalitarian society and end of serfdom. Or, the Croatian seed of freedom. Oh yeah, that church with the colorful tiles has frescoes in it that were painted BEFORE Columbus made it to the new world.
    Also, one of the cobblestone streets is said to have been filled with blood when people in serf-Zagreb fought with the University area, which was free and under ownership of the Catholic Church. That happense to be the area where the duo describe "the outdoors church," which is actually called a shrine, in English.
    I mean, I didnt mind not rollerblading when i was taken to all these places and learned all this history from a local, who today works as a geneticist in California.
