    Everyone is talking abt how Asogi was always so merciless and intense, and how he had already accepted the assassination mission. But something in the first case stands out even more with his turn:
    He was willing to put every last part of the assassin exchange in jeopardy for Ryunosuke in 1-1.
    Even with the burning desire for revenge we see consume him in DGS2 being present in DGS1, he was still more than willing to throw it all away. He truly valued Ryunosuke more than his revenge.
    What excellent writing.

    I love how one of the first lines he has after we hear this theme is:
    "In truth, we've been looking at all this backwards."
    That's not a prosecution line, that a defense line. In the Ace Attorney series, it's always been the defense bringing new ways to view the case that completely shake its foundation and make previous assumptions null and void, while the prosecution is more likely to bring up new evidence or simply point out a glaring flaw in the defenses logic.
    But of course, Asougi would use defense tactics against us. *He studied law as a defense lawyer*

    I love how after the final case, Asogi is still Asogi but in a less “rose tinted glasses” kind of view. He still laughs with his best friend, he trusts him with Karuma, and he encourages Susato to travel with Ryuu. But, it’s clear that he’s haunted by his inner demons of when he genuinely wanted to kill. The way they end the game off with a display of Asogi but for who he actually is makes it one of my favorite endings. Especially after we’re slapped in the face with the determined, ruthless, and callous nature of him. But, we’re taught throughout the game that there are many facets to him that are all still Asogi. The foreshadowing in the first case of who he is, of the mission he accepted, of the determination he harbored for his whole life. Asogi didn’t die in my opinion. He was right when he said that Ryuu changed. Because Ryuu became a formidable defense attorney. He was no longer the “replacement” for Asogi. Ryuu grew and stopped idolizing Asogi as the perfect student, best friend, and defense attorney. He’s able to see things in a different light, accept them, and work to find the truth.
    And, on the note of the piece itself, I love how you can hear bits and pieces of Kazuma’s previous themes at 0:47. This theme feels so strong and scarred in a way. It shows the turmoil Asogi has he’s been going through for his entire life. It sounds theatrical in a way to me. His story of who he was, how he ended up in London, his father, etc. As if the melancholic and dramatic tumultuous pain he’s held is making its way out and manifesting as something he needs to conquer.

      Agreed. And I love that we never hear Kazuma’s original theme after this point in the game - he’s not who Ryuunosuke thought he was, and he never will be. At 1:13 you can hear a part of the Professor’s theme; deep within Kazuma, there’s a hint of a willingness to kill. Kazuma is fighting for the truth, but at the same time he’s also struggling against himself. Against the part of himself that would do exactly what Klint van Zieks did. The tip of his katana breaking off in Gregson’s trunk is a symbol of that one moment when darkness consumed him, a moment which will stay with him for the rest of his life.
      At the start of the game, Ryuunosuke stands terrified at Kazuma’s side, while Kazuma seems to be an infallible embodiment of righteousness. But by the end, he and Kazuma duel as equals in the courtroom - Ryuunosuke just as skilled as Kazuma, and Kazuma just as vulnerable as Ryuunosuke. This theme makes that all the more apparent as they stand opposite each other, dressed in opposite colors, destined for opposite sides of the ocean, but still stand together as equals… as friends.

    • @nouration9685
      @nouration9685 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      this is just brilliant. Asogi is a character that I am pretty sure we will never get something like in any other piece of media.
      the idea of a character you initally perceive as this some sort of self righteous saint, who would do nothing wrong, because you are looking from the eyes of the protagonist, his best friend. only to pop up later and do the exact same things he has been doing, only the rose tinted glasses are off now. you see how a bit flawed he is, his arrogance, his hotheadedness being used the wrong way, his persistence to uncover the truth.
      the reason I think it is an AA exclusive thing is that you got to face him, fight against him, without necessarily any betrayal happening. that's the beauty of Ace Attorney, you cn have two characters battle wits with each other as if they are mortal enemies, but they are just doing their jobs and can laugh and drink with each other after that.
      it is just brilliant how they did that, it is very realistic too cuz a lot of times in our lives we see some people with rose tinted glasses and refuse to see their flaws, and you refuse to believe there are some aspects about them you don't know considering you just met them, and also shows how perspective matters, cuz at first we found Asogi funny and charming when he was poking fun at Auchi and humilating him, but now we see Naruhodo being a bit hurt by how aggressive Asogi was against him.

    The Revived Prosecutor has to be one of my favorite themes in the game. From a musical standpoint, it pretty much symbolizes Ryunosuke’s point of view from learning about Kazuma’s “revival”.
    It starts off with a very strong section, and from the instruments you can tell it is similar to van Zieks’ theme. First and foremost after meeting Kazuma as the masked apprentice, your initial impression of him is someone of the same status and aura as van Zieks; someone prestigious and someone who you shouldn’t get on your bad side. I feel like this shows how differently Ryunosuke sees Kazuma after the reveal. It shows how he still sees Kazuma as someone who’s “strong”, but a different kind of strong than Kazuma was before the SS Burya incident.
    Next is the very familiar melody of Kazuma’s original theme. It does a great job of making you (playing as Ryunosuke) grounded in the fact that this man (who we established as intimidating and wholly different in the first section) is still Kazuma, your best friend. He is the same person who risked his future to defend you in court, and risked being caught to bring you to London. However, this section’s sounds a bit different. In 0:54, the bass note is different than the original Samurai With A Mission. It adds a hint of terror to the original, and makes you feel that your idolized perception of Kazuma after his “death” has suddenly been corrupted upon meeting him again. I love it.
    Lastly is the sad and slightly calmer section. I love how they did this. I feel like even if Ryunosuke saw how much Kazuma changed into a prosecutor, it’s evident that Kazuma is a pained man. This is the section wherein it shows Kazuma’s vulnerability, and despite not getting used to Kazuma’s change, Ryunosuke still has to push through to help him see his troubles through to the end. After this section, the entire thing loops again. I also love how this last section lasts pretty short, and transitions back into the strong, intimidating first section. I think it symbolizes that despite the trauma and pain Kazuma faces especially in regards to the Professor case, he swiftly switches back to his normal side, as a reborn prosecutor, apprentice to the Reaper of the Bailey.
    sorry i needed to get this off my chest i love kazuma he is baby

    The reveal that Kazuma was still alive was fantastic but I think the first time you hear this theme was an even better moment. Kazuma patiently waits for you to finish pressing Van Zieks, then raises his own objection, and points out lies and contradictions using the court record, just as he taught you to do and you’ve been doing for almost two whole games at this point. This theme kicks in and you think “sweet, a new objection theme” and then halfway through your argument getting pulverized his leitmotif kicks in just to remind this is Kazuma motherfucking Asogi you’re dealing with, your best friend who taught you everything you know AND survived for almost year as an amnesiac under Barok Van Ziek’s tutelage.

    I love how this feels like a twisted version of Asogi's initial theme. The bits and pieces of the original theme make their way into this one, providing this with such mixed emotions, accurate to how he's portrayed in the Great Ace Attorney 2. He's still Kazuma, he still cares for you, and he still wants justice, but now he's haunted by his inner demons, and he's afraid of the harm he could bring to others. And now he stands across from you in the Old Bailey, once your ally and now your opponent in court.
    It takes a lot to turn a theme of a once-compatriot into that of your new rival, and this pulls it off great.

      We hear both the instruments from Japan and from Britain playing together. However, instead of being something like a blend, it feels like London was forced into him, seeing as London's instruments basically dominate most of the song (almost like a culture shock). Despite this, Asougi is still there in some capacity. He's still the man we loved, but corrupted partially by the journey he's been through. He's still the rugged, clever and determined man, but now it's amplified and pointed at us.
      Seeing from the plot alone, your analysis is spot on.

It then goes to heavy tunes usually seen in a prosecutor's theme to make you realize how serious they are about getting a 'Guilty' verdict.

Then after an incident they become cold and ruthless, distance themselves from their Naruhoudo and become prosecutors. Then after fighting Naruhoudo in court and solving the case that had been tormeting them, they finally reconnect with their old friend, even tho they still are kinda cold and serious compared to their old selves

    DGS2 SPOILERS
    I see some people saying that when Asougi returns, it really feels like he’s not the same person and did “die” in some way, but I personally have quite a different analysis. To me everything he went through after the boat incident forced him to reveal a side of him he had always concealed. Remember that when we meet him in Case 1 of DGS, he has already accepted to go to Britain to assassinate someone ... And even though he didn’t want to carry out his mission he however genuinely was dead set on getting his revenge. Since the beginning he’s had this absolute, extreme side within him, it’s simply that we met him through Naruhodou’s eyes that was obviously blind to all of it and idealised him (and now that I’ve replayed the first case, there already was some foreshadowing).
    I find that quite interesting that the character that was supposed to motivate our main character during the first game (and thus us too) was deconstructed in such a way in the second game, as some fundamentally flawed and messed up individual with tons of issues. In DGS1, everything Naruhodou does, he does it for the memory of his late friend, to “replace” him, yet in DGS2 his duty is now to confront Asougi to correct him, but I think it also represents Naruhodou growing up, and stepping out of Asougi’s shadow, by first recognizing that Asougi is no god, shouldn’t be put on a pedestal, and needs to be saved from himself.

      When people claim how different Asougi acts as a prosecutor, I can't help but disagree.
      Asougi is often very intense as a prosecutor and even a little vicious but *he acted like that in DGS Case 1 too*
      It's actually kind of clever because the reason no one noticed it was because it was all directed at Auchi who is the comedic punching bag of the AA series.

    • @ChloHB
      @ChloHB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      cti23gy YES I also think he’s a very interesting opponent and prosecutor, because he’s quite clever and honest, truly wants the truth, while not holding back and being quite ruthless and efficient. He never attacks the defense either (Klavier is the only one not to do so). He has the potential to be an excellent prosecutor when he doesn’t have, you know, a personal grudge against the defendant

      @ChloHB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      h j Yep you’re right, it was supposed to be a trilogy. My guess is that the third case was supposed to be the end of the second game, so we would have had more time with the “masked disciple”, which would have been cool, and an entire third game with prosecutor Asougi (no idea what they could have done with Van Zieks tho). Yeah, some parts are rushed, but these parts personally don’t bother me and it’s still my favourite AA game. I can’t wait for Scarlet Study to finish their translation of the game

    Its even funnier when you realise Jigoku hasn't yet heard the news of Asogi's revival while everything was happening.
    That said its certainly lucky for Kazuma. Although he didnt originally intend to kill Gregson, he certainly intended on exposing all of the shenanigans behind the Professor and was already expecting to get into trouble when he decided to bring Ryunosuke.

    One of my favorite prosecutor Kazuma Asogi moments is actually when you chat with him at Barok office during case 4. Of course, you get some hilarious dialogue from Kazuma about how Barok rearranged his wine barrels once a week, which is not only funny but also great insight into Barok as an OCD perfectionist. But there's also some really great symbolic dialogue here too.
    To me, a great symbolism for Kazuma character arc is actually when you speak with Kazuma in Barok van Zieks office during case 4 investigation. If you click on the giant portrait of Klint in the background, Kazuma will claim that he has no idea who it is and never even noticed it was there, despite being Barok apprentice for 3 whole months.
    It really shows that Kazuma is just so blinded by revenge that he'll blatantly ignore anything that stands in the way of his determined path. He'll even ignore the obvious that's staring him in the face.
    Then, after Ryunosuke tells him to open his eyes, Kazuma does such and realized the truth: telling Barok that without the bias, he's starting to see him a new light. And now he realizes that it's Barok who has been living in delusions all these years regarding the Professor's identity. It's so brilliant to show that Kazuma HAS awakened and opened his eyes to the real truth now.

    DGS 2 SPOILERS
    the "change" naruhoudou perceived is only a telltale sign of the idealization he performed on asougi. he already had "this intense" part of him that we see during the trial in DGS2. this intensity was just targeted towards another purpose at that time. but it was still there. asougi is someone who IS intense, in essence. and multifaceted too, which is something people tend to forget because we only saw him through naruhoudou's idealization for almost two games. though, as I said, people are multifaceted and obviously asougi never showed to anyone, and especially not to his partner, the fucked up part of this intensity/passion, rooted in trauma and utmost pain.
    and for that, I think he's a very relatable character, at least to me (even though my trauma fortunately do not involve literal death) but maybe for a lot of people too...
