Anki is very underrated. I use it for every subject even for self studying, this is all you need. A bunch of students take useless notes that have no beneficial use since spaced repetition and active recall aren't utilized. Great video!

I would disagree, notes aid comprehension, taking more and more notes would mean greater comprehension and understanding of a topic. Although retention would be anki where it shines

Key terms, Formal definitions, Equations - simple, front, back or cloze
Concept questions - Longer, a bit complex, may ask mathematical property (how many solutions a system of linear equations might have)
Exercises and examples - Longer and harder to break down. You'll use the other two card types to answer these equations.
    2:30 Key terms
    1. [Term]: A... ans Integer: A
    2. Integer: [Definition] ans Integer: A...
In general, these are your informal definitions, written in simple English.
    3:12 Formal definitions
Similar to key terms card, but here more complex, can have equations etc.
Formal definitions can get really complex sometimes, so use more cloze within the definition.
    4:07 Equations
    1. x = [...] ans x = 8y
    2. y = [...] ans y = x/8
Cloze one part (back and forth), then vice versa
In general, these will cover properties - trig identities, derivative tables (This equals this)
    4:54 Concept questions
    Use cloze overlapper
    1. 4:54
    2. 5:46
    6:02 Exercises and examples
    1. Simple one ans quesion
    2. 6:33 Question with cloze ans steps (use cloze overlappper) NB don't memorize solution, but process thus grade the process (eg if you get process write but get an addition wrong somewhere then mark as good)

Thanks for your video. I'm trying to navigate through whether flash cards are for me and how I will enhance my Maths study if I choose Anki. I hear what you're saying re not relying on Anki for everything. I'm a bit more "old school" but I'm coming into the 21st Century in my approach to study. I've encountered the learnings about Active Recall and Spaced Repetition which sound pretty convincing to me. I'm preparing to start a Post Grad Diploma in Maths and I have a 12 month lead time to prepare for it, so I'm looking around for ways and systems to maximise my prospects. Oh, and WTF is Cloze? I dont know what this means at all. I was impressed by your presentation so I'll subscribe. Thanks Crash! (for want of a better name).

Hello, one year later, but cloze means 'deleting' a certain part of text as a way of asking what sould be placed in that empty space, for instance, if you are studying a language you can 'cloze' a certain word of a sentence in order to remember it. In maths you can do this with symbols or anything you prefer.

Hi, thanx, I appreciate your video! Can you share a deck package (apkg) rather than a collection package (colpkg)? In order to import your collection package I have to delete my entire anki collection.

Do you first go through the lecture slides or course book and add flash cards for equations, definitions, key terms etc. and then add flash cards for exercises/examples? I am just wondering if it is more efficient to do that way or look at exercises first and then add relevant theory into anki?

This video is amazing! You are a genius. I will start my major in economics next year and I will be incorporating your method, thank you so much... How do you choose the exercises and concept questions to add on Anki? Do you just add what you think it was important from the lecture/books after you study? Thank you so much

    • @angelafieldman3427

Also do you create the exercises/question or do you copy them from the lecture/books?

    • @CrashHermit

Hey there! Thank you so much for the kind words. I'll answer the questions one by one.
"How do you choose the concept questions to add on Anki?"
When I select material, I generally will try to find a book or lecture material that does the work for me. So for example when picking out a book that I will be studying from I try to choose one that will include a review section at the end of the chapter that asks concept questions (like Stewart's calculus) or a book that includes a summary of the chapter that I can pull concept questions out of (Mankiw's principles of economics).
"How do you choose the exercises to add on Anki?"
When it comes to exercises it can depend on what your time constraints are. If you are a student and don't have a lot of time, I would just use the examples from books/lectures, assigned homework, and if possible old tests as the primary exercises that I would study. Or if there is a review section at the end of a chapter you can pull from those also. If you have a lot of time you may be able to do something arbitrary and just do all the odd or even numbers.
"Do you create the exercises/question or do you copy them from the lecture/books?"
In general yes. Now some exercises/questions aren't in a good format to make into flashcards so you may have to do some rewording or even restructuring of the question/exercise. I have heard of some people making their own exercises but it takes so much time to do so I don't think it's very practical, especially when there is already so much good material that you can use out there.
I'm glad you could find this useful and good luck with your studies next year!

@@angelafieldman3427 I think there’s enough work in answering questions while learning at an undergraduates level, I’d just try and figure out a good way to put text book problems into Anki.

For your exercise cards, how do you get the cloze deletion to hide/show what you want it to hide/show? For example, if you have a card for a 3-step exercise, how do you make it hide all three steps at first, then reveal the first step after you hit spacebar, then reveal the first two steps after you hit spacebar again, and then reveal all three steps after you hit spacebar a third time?

    • @CrashHermit

Well for that you would probably need to use the hint fields apps.ankiweb.net/docs/manual20.html#hint-fields and then click through them one by one. Unfortunately something like cloze overlapper won't do that.

Did you ever think about memorizing the procedures for solving certain types of math problems on one card and then relating that set of procedures to the language based around those types of problem?

    • @CrashHermit
      @CrashHermit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey there! I appreciate the question, but you'll have to forgive me, I'm not quite following what you mean. Specifically this part "relating that set of procedures to the language based around those types of problem" is confusing me. Do you mean something like, create a card on how to differentiate polynomials and then ask a bunch of questions related to that procedure?

I think he his talking about word problems and remembering what those natural language questions translate to in mathematical expressions. I guess it would be useful in real world applications
