Located 90 km (56 miles) northwest of Lisbon, Peniche is a picturesque seaside town that was as island until the 16th century, and is now located in a peninsula, due to sediments transported by the Atlantic Ocean.
Peniche is best-known these days for it's world-class north and west-facing beaches, which attract thousands of travelling surfers every year, as well as for the Peniche Fort, a 16th century fortification with a turbulent history.

Já li sobre como são gentis, alegres e prestativos os cidadãos de Peniche. A melhor parte de conhecer uma cidade e suas belezas naturais, é ter contato direto com seus moradores e sentir de perto sua cultura, mesmo q esse contato seja breve, como sentar e " tomar um café."

Hello Jan-Tore! 😀 Yes, it was very fitting! There's a much bigger lighthouse in Peniche, on the westernmost point of the peninsula (Cabo Carvoeiro). That one looks like a little fortified tower.

As someone who was born in Peniche and whose family emigrated in the 1960s it was interesting to watch your video. What strikes me about the town is the almost total lack of trees / vegetation. Peniche has striking landscapes and great beaches but it never make the list of pretty Portuguese towns ☹️

Olá Jorge! 😊 Yes, trees are very rare in Peniche, the northern side of the peninsula is pretty much like the southern one, in terms of greenery (or lack thereof). Part 2 of the tour will be published in a couple of weeks.
I also agree with you that Peniche is not what I'd call a typical "pretty town". Striking landscapes, but in person one can notice that urban planning has not been great... It's still well worth a visit though! 😊

Vivi na Rua da Liberace, em Peniche de Cima até 1965. Portanto ainda me lembro bem da marginal norte, Papoa, Remédios, etc.
Também o jardim a qual o Francisco refere era lindo, com lindas palmeiras.
An interesting thing about that light house right at the end. If you are in Peniche, it provides free wi-fi so you can use it if you don't have phone service in Portugal.

I consider Peniche to be my second Portuguese home (1st one of course if Atouguia da Baleia, a few minutes from Peniche and where I was actually living). As I'm sure I already shared with you, this is the area I intend to move back to when I move permanently. I love it! It felt like I was 'home'. Terei de voltar a Peniche outro dia, para apanhar o barco que vai para a ilha das Berlengas (conhece?).

O dia de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem é comemorado no dia 15 de agosto? Ela é a padroeira de Belo Horizonte. Sua imagem foi trazida para o antigo arraial que aqui existia, e colocada na igrejinha de pau a pique, por um português, no século XVIII. Amanhã é o dia dela, mas as comemorações começaram no dia 6 de agosto. Há quermesses, barraquinhas, missas e a procissão luminosa, que será amanhã, entre outras comemorações.
Se eu não estou enganada, no adro da antiga igrejinha aconteciam as trocas, compras e vendas de gado, ouro, etc., pelos tropeiros. O feijão tropeiro é uma delícia e é característico de Minas Gerais. É a única forma que eu como feijão! 😄

Olá Maria! 😀😀 Eu penso que não é no 15 de Agosto, o feriado municipal de Peniche é na primeira segunda-feira após o primeiro domingo de Agosto (este ano foi no dia 8). Ah, não sabia que também é padroeira de BH! Será que esse português que trouxe a imagem era de Peniche? Feijão Tropeiro? Não conheço 😁 E eu adoro feijão! O meu preferido é o feijão frade, não sei se tem o mesmo nome no Brasil.

@@POVTours Basicamente, o feijão tropeiro é uma mistura de feijão, não muito cozido, com farinha de mandioca, torresmo, linguiça, ovos cozidos, alho, cebola e couve. Geralmente o feijão tropeiro é acompanhado apenas de arroz branco, simples. É um prato que é uma verdadeira refeição e tornou-se um prato básico do cardápio dos tropeiros, daí a origem do nome: feijão (de) tropeiro.
No Brasil, desde o período colonial, o transporte das mais diversas mercadorias era feito por tropas a cavalo ou em lombos de burros. Os homens que guiavam esses animais eram chamados de tropeiros.
Se você tem amigos brasileiros em Portugal, talvez nem todos conheçam. É um prato bastante característico de Minas Gerais, São Paulo e Goiás.

This is a most interesting POV walking tour of a unique oceanside town, the westernmost of continental Europe. It captures masterfully the atmosphere, from the meandering deserted alleys flanked by quaint little houses to the waterfront and beach scenes with pop music in the background. Very good introductory presentation of the raids carried out by the Barbary Coast Muslim pirates who captured mostly non-Muslim people and sold them as slaves in the Ottoman Empire. Muslims enslaved Muslims much less frequently because Islam forbade Muslims to do that. Looking forward to watch part 2. I am sending this vid to all my contacts.

Hi Miguel! I have a suggestion which might help you increase your audience considerably. Do a walking tour titled "On the footsteps of Ronaldo and Eusebio". Just imagine how many soccer fans will hit such a title. Walk through Estadio da Luz and tell the wonderful story of Eusebio. Old clips from famous performances might help. Walk through Estadio Jose Alvalade and tell the amazing story of Ronaldo, including how Laszlo Boloni, the Romanian of Hungarian ethnicity who from a soccer player (part of Steaua Bucharest who defeated FC Barcelona in 1986 to win the European Champions Cup) became the coach of Sporting Club and discovered Ronaldo, then a teenager with facial acne! My hope is that many of the soccer addicts who will want to see this pov walking tour will then be curious to watch your other tours. What do you think? The two great stadiums are accessible to you. You know better than me if clips with famous sequences with Eusebio and Ronaldo are available without copyright worries. Let me know.

That's a great suggestion! 😀 I wonder if it's possible to find public domain footage of Eusébio and Ronaldo, especially Ronaldo, considering everything happened in the last 20 years... That will probably be the main problem of this project. The way TH-cam deals with copyright and the fair use doctrine is terrible, in general (especially when it comes to small channels like mine), and can get a channel in a lot of trouble.
I need to investigate this issue further, but I wanna do this video! 😃

Olá Claudia, boa tarde! 😀 Infelizmente a escravatura foi algo que sempre esteve presente em quase todas as civilizações, não há etnias, nacionalidades ou culturas inocentes. É normal que nunca tenha ouvido falar, pois essa parte da história (a parte em que os europeus não são os vilões) é ignorada, não é ensinada... Ainda hoje escravatura existe nalguns locais, Mauritânia, por exemplo.

The Slave Trade was started by Portugal first before the North African/Muslim Pirates. Portugal enjoyed a monopoly on the African sea born Slave Trade for over a century, importing around 800 Slaves Annually.
Hello Naima. Thank you for your comment, but what you wrote is inaccurate, and that's not my opinion, that's an historical fact. Any historian will confirm what I'm saying. The North African slavers were active centuries before Portugal even existed. Back in the 8th century Barbary/Muslim pirates were already raiding European coastal towns and villages, but it greatly intensified in the Middle Ages. The problem of Barbary piracy and slave-taking was so great that the Trinitarians, a Catholic religious order, were founded in 1198 in France to collect ransoms and even to exchange themselves as ransom for those captured and pressed into slavery in North Africa.
The scope of corsair activity began to diminish in the latter part of the 17th century, but it was only after the French conquest of Algeria in 1830 and subsequent pacification by the French during the mid-to-late 19th century that those raids of Europeans towns finally stopped. Meanwhile slave markets continued to exist and still exist today, for example in Mauritania.
For context, Portugal was founded in 1143 and got involved in the slave trade in the late 15th century. Portuguese ships only began exploring the African coast in the early 15th century.
