    1. Your flat iron needs to be at least 450 degrees to get a nice look
    2. Actually blow dry your hair first before you flat iron it
    3. Spray a little Oil sheen all over before flat ironing
    4. Your hair is really thick so you need to do smaller sections

    • @PixieHollowLounge
      @PixieHollowLounge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Rayven Hawthorne AT LEAST 450 degrees?? 450 degrees is when healthy hair starts to burn, so there's a high risk of heat damage though.

      Oh wow!! Maybe your hair I have hair like (I'm not being racist) but I'm white and if I have it at 450 my hair will fall off!

    • @PixieHollowLounge
      @PixieHollowLounge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really, our hair won't fall off on the spot if we use it at 450 degrees, but we'll most likely get heat damage (when parts of hair become permanently straight.. and the only way to get rid of it is to cut it off so our hair will "fall off" technically lol)

    homegirl.
    you need to hit those roots real good
    dont just rush through each strand
    flat iron smaller strands
    use some oil
    put the heat up a little bit higher
    nd you will be good
    its just minor things

      @shellybabii3684 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I just failed at this last night. I think my fear of heat damage was to real cuz my hair look like yours. o and if you get done to fast it won't last. I see now I should have done smaller sections and the heat level. let us know if you tried aging and how that turned out.

    If you want your hair to be really straight, and NOT look like a blowout, you need to blow dry it straight first.

      Yes that is the key my hair is thick and I always blow dry it straight in sections then flat iron it in sections. Not to rush and small pieces it takes a while but once in a while I like it straight

    You need to use a fine tooth comb and chase the comb with the flat iron; that helps distribute the heat through each strand of hair. You chasing the flat iron with the brush is not going to work.

  • @queennii1244

    Smaller sections and a small tooth comb would've made it even silky/straighter & the flat iron is suppose to chase the comb/brush your brush chased the flat iron that defeats the purpose of using the brush.

    • @queennii1244
      @queennii1244 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Your flat iron needs to be hotter - like 450 degrees for curly girls. Try chasing it with a small comb, that's what i do and it always works!

    • @makeuponthemind32
      @makeuponthemind32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      That's not always true. Just because your hair is curly doesn't mean you need more heat. Typically but not always ethnic hair is kinkier but usually more fine than other hairs. The ideal temperature for breaking hydrogen bonds within the hair is 365°. The more coarse your hair is you will need to increase heat but 450° is usually used to melt dreads.

    Ok, Ladies, Imma help y'all out. The best type of flat iron are the ones that have Titanium Plates! Again, the best flat iron are Titanium Plates. The reason why U get flat irons with Titanium Plates because it smooths the hair better and make your hair way straighter.
    Natural styles are the hardest styles to maintain. When flat ironing natural hair, U need a flat iron that goes up to at least 450°. I remember going to Kenneth Shuler Cosmetology School. And in my kit, I had a titanium plate flat iron. Y'all, talk some serious straighten? Yes ma'am!
    Ok, if U have a Sally's Beauty Supply or better yet Walgreen's have the Red Pro's titanium plate flat irons. It's a lil bit cheaper, but it works. I had a pair of Red Pro's 1/2 titanium plate flat iron. That sucker went up to 460°! I had it for 4 years and two weeks ago, it died. 😞 Anyway, getting back, I am going to Walgreens to get another pair. I also know how to clean your flat irons.
    Always keep a jar of relaxer around. It doesn't matter what kind, just keep a jar. Relaxer cleans flat irons, electric curlers and stove curlers. All U have to do is, plug up your flat irons, curlers. Turn them on to make sure they are hot. Get U two old cloths that U don't used. Lay one cloth on the table and put your flat irons, curlers on top of the towel while they are hot. U are going to take your other towel and dip a corner of it into the relaxer. Take that corner of the same towel with relaxer on it and rub it across the flat irons, curlers, etc. Continue to use that technique until U don't see any buildup. The relaxer is an acidic compound so it will eat away stuff like that. Continue to keep dipping the relaxer on the heated items. Once U have all that buildup off, unplug your tools. Wait until they cool off. After they cool off, U are going to take another corner of that same towel, run a lil bit of cold water on the other in of the towel. Clean off any remains of the relaxer and U are good to go. Any questions? Feel free to ask. I don't mind helping out. 😀

    Part your hair in smaller sections, use higher heat (stay below 450), and try using a product with propylene glycol in it (Paul Mitchell and Frizz Ease are some good ones). Also, ust a tip: my hair never used to get straight until I started using Marcel curling wax (yes, the old school kind they used with hot combs!). Maybe it'll work for you.

  • @mrod87

    So I think I know ur issue bc we have a very similar hair texture and my hair looks just like urs when I'm done flat ironing (ironically I just straightened my hair this weekend after not straightening it for a year!). So I've been natural since 2007...in 2011/12 I began my second transition which was from heat. In 2014 all the heat damage was gone. As a result, my hair no longer straightens bc it's not "heat trained" anymore. So I say all this to say, if you want your hair bone straight you would need to do one of two things 1. Flat iron your hair more regularly so your curl pattern can loosen and be easier to straighten. 2. Use extremely high heat (above 400 degrees). I don't like to do either so my hair ends up looking like your hair as well which I have grown to love bc it's so much more unique than bone straight hair. Now I air dry, lightly blow dry, then flat iron on like 350 degrees and if it's not sleek enough I'll put my hair in flexirods to make it look wavy. At this point straight hair is really just to trim my ends and check my length...other than that I prefer curly hair.

    • @Maryamjhampton
      @Maryamjhampton  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michelle Rodgers Right! That's all i did was trim my ends and it was back curly the next day.

    • @heywaitMarlee
      @heywaitMarlee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might just be right because my curl pattern/texture is very close to Maryam's and my hair doesn't get bone straight either. Since i've been natural (3 years) I have straightened my hair three times. Each time it comes out looking like a blowout. I prefer my hair curly anyway and I am not about to start over due to heat damage so I just wanted to say thank you for your explanation and long live the curls! :D

    • @mrod87
      @mrod87 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      heywaitMarlee Yea girl! I know your pain! Honestly, Ive just given up. Ill blow my hair out or lightly flat iron to help with a rod set or a longer twist out (which is what I ended up doing this flat ironing...my hair just isnt meant to be straight anymore, and I dont think I like it that way anyway! ha!

      ***** Yea...I need to try again in a few months. I do not know what the problem is! When I was flat ironing my hair regularly my hair was pin straight...now that my hair is its natural texture 95% of the year, the few times I do straighten it...it just puffs back up in a few hours. I will keep trying! Thank you!

    First of all, your hair is absolutely stunningly beautiful, and curly hair requires a lot of maintenance so you obviously take wonderful care of it, so good on you! ❤️
    As for the straightening of your hair, you'll have better results if you work in much smaller sections-- about an 1/8th inch in thickness since you have so much hair.
    Try brushing through a section before flat ironing like you're doing here, but then grab a heat resistant fine tooth comb, and follow THAT with your flat iron instead of using the brush because it'll provide you with better tension, and tension plus heat is how you straighten with the best results.
    Run the iron through your hair very slowly. You'll make less passes through the hair by taking the time to get it right the first time, and it'll be way easier for you! Don't worry, hair burns at 450 degrees so as long as you're nowhere near that on your iron (400-425 is probably the best range) you're all set! ❤️❤️

    i know its been said a million times before by other commenters but while i dont have curly hair i have thick hair that just does what it wants.
    You need MUCH smaller sections. for your hair density id say around an inch at a time and use a comb rather than a brush to pull the hair straight BEFORE you heat it and go in slow strokes.

  • @jess.r.95

      You should know that with her curl pattern, it’s best to blow dry as straight as possible first, then blow dry. It’s really the only way to truly get the roots as straight as possible, and the rest of her hair will require less passes.

  • @PinkInTheDiamonds
    @PinkInTheDiamonds 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure you know by now but the reason you aren't getting the super straight result you're looking for is because you need to blow dry it. Or even do a curler set and sit under the dryer. Blow drying will not only help straighten it better but it will be easier to straighten it. And grabbing smaller sections as well. If you really don't want to blow dry your hair just be sure to grab very small sections and do the comb chase/flat iron method. You have wonderful hair.

    2- do smaller pieces and don't rush through the process

    4- if your hair is stiff, like sticking out when you hold the ends, your probably doing one of these steps wrong.

    Here"s some tip's cause I straighten my hair every week (I know its bad) and my hair's really curlyFirst: Use smaller section's when straightening your hairSecond: Thoroughly straighten it don't just pass it once and move onThird: Try not to brush it so much after u straighten it. It creates frizz Fourth: If u feel like you need to bush it then use a comb maybe a rat tail comb with the pointy endFifth: Try to straighten your root's first then work your way down your hairAnd last but not least: Adore your curl's I have curly hair and lots of girl's tell me they would do anything to have them I really hope this helped. Well i did not know I do not put heat on my hair, too precious, but I do not think so. Anyway I put only the coconut oil in them. And I have found another video with straightener brush and the results are awesome.

      Noooo!! Do not use oil when putting heat to your hair! If you want to fry your food, what do you use? Oil. Don't fry your hair too!

    I have very very very very thick hair and I can get it pretty straight. Imma give you some advice on ironing ur hair.😊
    First, you only go through your hair twice. You should iron each piece at least 3 times. Next, you are parting it too big. You should part it to where the pieces are smaller. Last, you are either using too little protector or you need a different one. I myself, use oil or grease. When I use the oil or grease my hair turns out very greasy..very greasy. Also, you don't have to blow dry your hair before you iron it, it's just more heat that you don't need. I really hope you try these tips☺️,love ya😘

    The flat iron isn't the issue, you just have to blow dry it before you straighten. Normally when I got to salons, the stylist wash my hair, blow dry it and then straighten. But, there's nothing wrong with your method. It looks good in my opinion.
