    Shawn, I have had 5 instructors in 7 years and none of them get this right. One of them even calls out David D. and Anika S as examples of "proper" head movement, but when I tried to do that it totally de-railed my game...reason is he missed the reverse tilt that they employ. When I work my head as you instruct, I hit the straightest and purest shots of my life, with amazing control and distance. Key is setting up with that head slightly turned for me...which I notice also aligns my eyes with a natural draw for the club path. This is the magic bullet! Thank you my man, well done.

    Great stuff Shawn! I think my head does not stay back on the downswing, so your tip was good for me to focus on keeping it back during the downswing and through impact.

    @parttroll1 Hey Craig! It is all about the right focus man! First, you secure the feel of a "through the ball release" with no ball; then you introduce small things like tee bits or plastic ball markers that you clip off the ground on your way to your "through the ball release" which means that your focus is through the ball and you just make sure you feel that whatever object you place in the way is in the way of YOU RELEASING TO THE TARGET! See "golf pro lesson strike it pure" part 1 and 2

    @KevinStaggs Jack's lower body was a great mix of Sam Snead's squat and Bobby Jones's timing; I have so many videos that explain this and here is a few: "Golf pro lesson downswing weightshift", "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update", "golf pro lesson horse shoes and lassos" and "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through" Shawn

    Kudos to you Shawn: Finally someone explains the position and the release of the head during the golf swing. There is a range of when the release occurs eg. sorenstam vs cory pavin. My question is this: How far forward does the head move during the downswing and how do exactly time the head release after impact and into the follow thru. What swing thoughts do you use to stay "behind the ball" at impact?
    Much appreciated!

    People,listen to this man,he really knows his stuff.Today at the range I finally "got" the whole tilt you head and spine business.Wow! Talk about connecting with the ball.I was drawing and fading at will,even with a 60 degree wedge.The only small departure I was making from Shawn was not tilting as much with the wedges and short irons,as the swing is much more upright.I finally understood the "swing your arm unit"as well and was achieving plenty of lag.My only concern now is how to do the low knockdown shot as I was hitting the wedges and short irons to ridiculous heights.Best golf teacher on youtube alright,aptly named.Greetings from Australia Shawn.BTW We have a TV comedian,Santo Cilauro,a dead set ringer for Shawn in appearance and vocal manner.

    very helpful and thorough explanation of why the head should remain back on the downswing. The visual/mental image of how your body would look while skipping a rock on the water is a wonderful tool I can take to the course. Thank you, shawn!

    Shawn,
    I've been waiting for this one for a while. I actually started over-turning my head away from the target because it seemed to free up my back swing, but as you pointed out there is a balance point where too much isn't good either (especially with certain clubs). This is a a great supplement to the garage door "Bubba" video. Based on those 2 video's, this proves you don't have to be Mr. Elastic with zero hip movement to generate power.

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @steckleinjr It is a matter of bone structure which will definitely sabotage the backswing's levels and range of motion if the head does not turn before or during the swing; the balls going left is from a poor sequence where he is probably focused on the golf ball instead of where the ball is supposed to go; It is just as important for the right eye dominant person to do than the left; it makes all the difference to both my right handed and left handed swings; Shawn

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @aldojoel1981 Hi Aldo's! It means sometimes you focus on target and sometimes you don't; when you don't the ball BECOMES THE TARGET and the best way to go to the ball AS A FINAL DESTINATION is to swing down over the top!
    If you focus on letting the weight of the arm club unit swing towards a target and feel that the ball is in the way of this action, then you will swing much better; see "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through" and "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2

    Yet another great video Shawn. Can't wait to see you on the Golf Channel as their new instructor. The pre-turn of the heads looks very Nicklaus (still the best of all time) to me. Any other tid-bits from Jack that work with your methodology? I really liked his use of the lower body. Seems though when I try to emulate that, I over do it or something and tend to miss left.

    Shawn I did this on the range tonight( sternum on the ball and cheek behind) with a surprising amount of success until I got to my nemesis the 5 iron, this is the iron im having real trouble with for some reason, where would you suggest for ball position at set up should be....keep up the great vids love the way you explain this so even a beginner gets it.

    I appreciate your attempts to educate us using reason along with demonstration. All these pieces or elements of a good golf swing are needed. Without them I would not recognize my advancement along the learning curve. I still must say that the ultimate goal is unconsciously combining these elements into the target picture, and doing it with increasing regularity. (focus)
    I am definitely not implying that that this is not your teaching goal. I am just speaking to the casual video watcher who might take this tip to the range, try it, and decide you don't know what you are talking about.

    Great video Shawn. I just started having trouble with my left rotator cuff (I'm a right handed player) and I thinks it's because I've been focusing on keeping my head quiet/still during the backswing, straining all 4 of the muscles groups associated with the rotator cuff. Your analysis on the head/neck range of motion relationship and the recommendation to do what Jack Nicklaus does, preset the head, may be just the vitamin I needed. Would you agree that a preset would help reduce the strain on my left shoulder in the backswing? Or would you recommend an alternative solution?

    Hi Shawn, very interested in your comment around the 5 minute mark where you said keeping the rear shoulder (left for me, I'm a leftie) back can contribute to damaged rotator cuff. Although I'm a "mature baby-boomer", never had shoulder trouble until recently when I found that feeling that my left shoulder was staying back & not turning at all & just concentrating on turning my lower body was curing the weak slice. Should I be going under with the left (rear) shoulder rather than around? Cheers!

  • @dutypaidrock

    Not found a single slo-mo vid of a pro that contradicts this (not that I'm in the habit of trying!) Search for "Lee Westwood Swing Vision" - if he straightened his eyes in his head at the top of the swing, he'd be looking about 2 club-lengths behind the ball! I'd never noticed this before. This will definitely help me to stop getting 'ahead' of the ball which causes me to get far too steep and either hit fat or send the ball up but not forward!

    @clemshaw I had surgery on my neck and the doc put in a plate back there. I don't have the same range of motion in the neck anymore. Anything I can do to help my back swing. Today when I played my bad shots were either tops, blades, or the occasional weak pull.

  • @sagenites2003
    @sagenites2003 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shawn: I've been blocking my drives. Today at the range my only swing thought was to stay focused on the impact area unti my hands released - which I think is the same as keeping my head back, and I hit 8 straight drives in a row - for the first time in my life. Impact felt really square. Now I'm trying to understand why this worked. Is this a bandaid fixing another flaw? Is it wise to be thinking about keeping your head back or is that something that should happen naturally in a proper swing?

      The key here is to feel that the head position allows you to finish the backswing and release fully to target. There are so many ways to get this done, including the way Rory does it instinctively in his downswing. This video here was just another way to say it and do it.

    I have always been told to position the ball in the back of my stance for a fade and move it forward for a draw. This seems to be the reverse of what you profess?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know who you have been consulting but if you were kicking a soccer ball and wanted to make it hook, what direction would the kick be in? So to have a draw, you swing right with a closed face which means the ball position is farther back as the centre of the arc of the swing is under your sternum (sternal notch) please see "draw and fade shawn clement" and also get my series where we have amazing animation and overhead cameras to paint that picture for you.

    I'm just wondering if I'm constantly battling against my body / mind with golf as I've had no noticeable improvement or it just seems I'm having to return right back to the beginning with my swing i.e. checking grip, aim, stance, posture. Lately I seem to be topping shots don't know if this is due to the soft fairways I'm playing on in UK as at the range my shots where not that bad.
    Your sage advice would be great.
